Rubric Assignment

The activity that will be completed for this rubric is based on the Kentucky Math

Standard “KY.3.OA.8 Use various strategies to solve two-step word problems using the four

operations (involving only whole numbers with whole number answers). Represent these

problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the

reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including

rounding”. Students will learn a lesson on solving two-step word problems using the

“C.U.B.E.S.” strategy. After instruction, the students will be put into groups of four and asked to

create a poster showing this strategy.

The objective of the lesson is, “Students will be able to implement the “C.U.B.E.S”

strategy to solve two-step word problems”. The learning targets are, “I can identify the steps in

the C.U.B.E.S. mathematical problem-solving strategy,” and “I can use the C.U.B.E.S. strategy

to solve two-step word problems”.

Students will work with me to create a classroom poster of the steps of “C.U.B.E.S”. This

will begin by having a word problem ready for students to work as a class. The steps of

“C.U.B.E.S.” includes circling the question words, underlining key words, boxing key numbers,

evaluation (What steps do I take?), and solve and check. The poster will be created as we solve

the problem, with drawings or pictures added to clue students in on each step. These drawings

may consist of boxing in the word “box” in our “Box key numbers” step or circling the word
“circle” in our “Circle the question words” step. The steps will be reviewed after the problem is

completed. Then, students will be assigned groups in which they must create a poster solving a

two-step word problem. The students will be provided a word problem and will be expected to

demonstrate their use of “C.U.B.E.S.” to solve the problem. For this rubric, I have four

expectations. Students will be expected to correctly solve the problem, provide the correct

information on their poster such as their word problem and the steps they took to solve it,

demonstrate that they used the “C.U.B.E.S.” steps to solve their problem, and their use of

creative thinking in creating their posters.
