The human chromosome is the basic building block of life and is one of the most important
components of the cell to be transmitted from generation to generation. It is essentially an
organized structure of DNA that exists within the nucleus of human cells and comprises a
single chain of DNA that is coiled and super coiled to form dense thread like pieces. Like all
other eukaryotes, humans contain a fixed number of chromosomes in their cells. It is of two
types-Autosomes and Sex chromosomes.Twenty-two of these pairs, called autosomes, look
the same in both males and females. The 23rd pair, the sex chromosomes, differ between
males and females.
The number of human chromosomes was published in 1923 by Theophilus Painter. By
inspection through the microscope, he counted 24 pairs, which would mean 48
chromosomes. His error was copied by others and it was not until 1956 that the true
number, 46, was determined by Indonesia-born cytogeneticist Joe Hin Tjio.
The picture given below depicts chromosomes present in a human cell.

Hard, shiny, and tough—metals play a key role in the material world. Learning how to
extract these substances from the Earth and turn them into all kinds of useful materials was
one of the most important developments in human civilization.
Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides. Metals donate electrons to oxygen for the
formation of metal oxides. Metal oxides are generally basic in nature but it can also be
amphoteric in nature. Amphoteric oxides mean that they are acidic as well as basic in
nature. Some metals like sodium and potassium react vigorously with oxygen. Whenever
sodium or potassium is exposed to air it catches fire. Hence, they are kept in kerosene.
Reaction of Metal with Water: Some metals react with water to form metal hydroxide
whereas some of them do not react. Reactivity with water differs from metal to metal.
Metals like sodium and potassium are highly reactive. They react with water to form

alkalis. Metals which fall below hydrogen in the reactivity series does not react with dilute
acids. They cannot displace hydrogen to form a bond with a non-metal anion. However,
metals do not liberate Hydrogen gas with nitric acid barring Manganese and Magnesium.

20. Read the following and answer any four questions from (i) and (v). [1x4=4]
Electrical energy is converted into mechanical
energy by using an electric motor. Electric motor
works on the basis of rule suggested by Marie
Ampere and Fleming’s Left Hand Rule. When a
rectangular coil is placed in a magnetic field and a
current is passed through it, force acts on the coil,
which rotates it continuously. With the rotation of the
coil, the shaft attached to it also rotates. When an
electric current is supplied to the coil of the electric
motor, it gets deflected because of magnetic field. As
it reaches the halfway, the split ring which acts as
commutator reverses the direction of flow of electric current. Reversal of direction of the
current reverses the direction of forces acting on the coil. The change in direction of force
pushes the coil, and it moves another half turn. Thus, the coil completes one rotation
around the axle. Continuation of this process keeps the motor in rotation.
