FINDINGS

Improper Disposal and Segregation of Trash and Waste in the School Campus

Recently, Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology (BISCAST) has launched its

Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) campaign. This campaign encourages students,

employees, and guests to follow some policies that can help in minimizing solid wastes. These include

depositing of trashes in the bins with assigned material identifications, recycling of materials as well as

selling of papers and boxes that can be used for Income Generating Project (IGP), utilizing of non-

biodegradable materials for Technical and Livelihood Education (TLE) projects, and segregating of

waste materials for composting.

As we observe the implementation of the project, they place sets of trash cans in some of the

designated places in the campus. There are 4 trash cans in each sets with designated names on it. The

green one is for biodegradable, red for hazardous waste, yellow for paper, and lastly the orange for

non-biodegradable.

Some students and people in the school throw improperly there trash cans. Some people also

throw their trash properly on the designated trash cans. During the late afternoon, janitors collect the

trash on each of the designated trash cans to throw it on a larger garbage can so that it is easy for the

garbage collector to put it on truck. But, as we observed even though we throw our trash in the

designated trash, after the each type of trash cans are full of garbage, they will mix all the trash on

these designated trash. So where is the segregation of these trashes? The school had an effort on

implementing these project but it is not properly implemented until the end of disposing these garbage.

Improper disposal and segregation of trash and waste focuses on the proper segregation and

disposal of wastes. Segregation of wastes is one of the environmental issues recently, Wate
Segragation helps in recycling and reprocessing of the waste and reduces the further consumption of

natural resources. Effective segregation of wastes means that less waste goes to landfill which makes it

cheaper and better for people and the environment.  It is also important to segregate for public health.

In particular, hazardous wastes can cause long term health problems, so it is very important that they

are disposed of correctly and safely and not mixed in with the normal waste coming out on your places.
