Revision Lecture on Term Two:

Preparations For Exam

 Six questions to choose from
 Each question asks for you to draw on two illustrative examples as
evidence of what you are arguing

 In each case have something you want to get across about what you are
arguing
 If you draw on concepts and ideas, at least make reference to where they
originated –(Not expecting quotations and citations)

Performativity Question:
-Focus on Schechner’s Conceptual Framework
-Define how you understand the term and ho w you might use it
-Focus your answer on performativity in everyday life-Identity, social, drama etc.

Theatre Buildings and Their Relationships with audiences:


-Utilise examples from your own knowledge and experience
-Location of performance spaces and how they react to their environment
-How do audiences self select
-How might class and ethnicity affect who attends performances-in other words-
INTERSECTIONALITY

Semiotics:
-Using Knowledge of semiotics to inform your critique of reading a performance
and provide a deeper understanding of a performance
-Use theatre performance examples of how images and symbols are used to
demonstrate relationships and power shifts/relations

Ritual:
-Ritual as the basis of all performance
-Analyse this idea critically-ritual and social drama, ritual and theatre,
historiography etc.

Globalisation and Resistance:


-Using elements of theatre and performance such as hereness and newness in
order to resist elements of globalisation
-Define how you are looking at globalisation
-Consider community/applied theatre and/or site specific performance as your
examples

Archives:
-What is the value in theatre research
-Both material and digital
-Issues raised in using archives in theatre research
-Two or more archives or collections in illustration
-Examine limitations, positives and overall how they are still useful in theatrical
research for productions.
