Icebreaker Assignment

Hot Potato

Materials:
- Note cards/post-it notes
- A box/bag or whiteboard
- A small ball
- Music of your choice

Overview:
This is an activity that can be used as an icebreaker where students have the opportunity to have
fun while getting to know their own classmates. Kids will be throwing a ball around and can
choose a song that they would like to listen to, once the music stops they can answer questions or
share something about themselves with their classmates. In an ESL classroom it can also be used
as a review to grammar or vocabulary being taught. It can be adapted to any level from beginner,
intermediate or advanced learners.

Directions:
1. Play some music.
2. Students can stand in a circle and throw the ball to each other in a random order.
3. Stop the music at a random time, while facing away from the students.
4. Students holding the ball when the music stops has to answer a question or share
something about themselves.

Source:
I got the idea from a website called eslactive.com where it provides resources and ideas of
games, activities, and projects for ESL Teachers. I modified the idea so that instead of challenges
being given it would be consensual sharing of information.
