ECD 132 Learning Plan

Activity Name: Marble Painting Age of Child: 3-5 Years Old

Content Focus: Art
Key Content Area Concepts: Color, Lines, Space

Key Content Area Skills: Rolling a marble in a box to create lines on a piece of paper, identifying lines
and colors made by rolling marbles

Learning Outcome Statements and Associated Early Learning Standards:

 9.1.V PK.A: Know and use basic elements of visual arts.
 9.1.V PK.B: Combine a variety of material to create a work of art.
 MTE-4: Children being to identify, describe, classify, and understand shape, size, direction, and
movement during play and other activities.

Materials to collect/prepare:
 Marbles
 Tempera Paint
 Paper
 Flat Box

Activity Description:
 Place a piece of paper into a flat box.
 Drop marbles into various colors of paint.
 Drop paint colored marbles into the box.
 Roll marbles across paper.

Alternatively:
 Drop paint onto paper.
 Roll unpainted marbles across paint and paper.

Transition/warm up:
To transition into this activity, I would read the book Lines that Wiggle by Candace Whitman to introduce
the concept of lines and how they move.

Scaffolding to Support Diverse Learners

Scaffold down: If a child is having issues with this activity, have them use fingerpaints to make
lines instead of rolling the marble. You can also help them roll the marble if that is what is giving them
trouble.
Scaffold up: If a student is finding this activity boring, have them identify colors that would mix
together to create a line of another color (for example, ask them how they could make a purple line and
have them use red and blue). You can also ask them to make certain shapes with their marble to help
enforce fine motor skills.

Conversation to Support Learning:

 What would happen if we used ______ (insert another color) instead of the ones you used?
 What are some ways you could fill up the paper more?
 What did you notice about the paint as you rolled it?
 What would happen if we used a bigger marble?

Observations and Assessment:

 Child is able to identify different types of lines made by the marble rolling across the paper (9.1.V
PK.A).
