Comments:
Julio has been an asset to our team as he completed his practicum experience with us this semester. He has taken a genuine interest in learning
about our College, our office, and academic advising in general. From his first days in his practicum experience, he asked thought-provoking
questions, offered resources, and made himself available to support as needed. Julio was able to accurately assess situations and dynamics
among colleagues, and offered solutions and feedback that ultimately benefitted students. Coming from prior roles in University Life, he was
familiar with resources across campus, and helped students and advisors connect to relevant offices and individuals. I think seeing how advising
and student services function in an academic college provided invaluable insight as he looks to transition into a new professional space.

I have been particularly pleased to see Julio’s confidence and advising skills grow as he has begun advising students independently. He has
studied, seen, and heard enough to give students accurate direction for their academic plans. Aside from academic planning, he has the
interpersonal skills to read between the lines and engage students enough to gain a full understanding of their need, interests, and
commitments outside of coursework. Aside from seeing his confidence grow, I saw Julio genuinely confirming and affirming his professional
interest in academic advising. Julio has excelled in advising, and will likely continue working with us this summer to support orientation advising.

Aside from direct student advising, Julio worked on an advising assessment project that will serve as the foundation for our advising assessment
efforts. He started by looking at data in Navigate Mason (our scheduling and note-taking system), reviewing information on the Office of
Institutional Effectiveness and Planning (OIEP) website, and meeting with our College’s Data Analyst for more insight. Julio summarized key
points about students’ engagement with advisors, differences across programs/departments, and peak appointment times. We discussed early
drafts of his final report/presentation, when Julio was first analyzing the data. He and I brainstormed what the numbers and patterns might
mean, and Julio continued working on the report on his own. In reviewing his final documents, Julio addressed key questions, and made
relevant recommendations for next steps. His presentation and portfolio website are polished, professional, and full of relevant information.
Julio has been an exceptional practicum student, and I hope to have more opportunities to work with him again soon!
