Social Precursors of Drug Addiction

Introduction

The curse of drug addiction has dire consequences for both individuals and society. For example,
increase in road accidents, crime rates; deterioration of mental and physical health, decrease in
income; increase propensity to act violently and abusively, and much more. Without any doubt,
drug addiction is a serious social challenge. However, there are many social precursors which
increase manifold the risk of proliferation of drug addiction in society. Some of these precursors
include family circumstances, physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, deviant
relationships, bullying, and depression. By controlling these precursors, many lives, families, and
society can be saved from the curse of drug addiction.

Family Circumstances

There are several family factors which can encourage individuals to rely on drugs. For example,
if parents use drugs, it is likely that children will also be curious to experience drugs and other
substances. Similarly, some family members may believe that their family will not object if they
consume drugs. Relationship between parents also can affect drug usage in children. For
example, if relationships between parents are good, they can better take care of their children and
observe deviant behavior and depression before it is too late. Conversely, if children or any
family member are subjected to abusive treatment, such family member and children will be hurt
emotionally. Under depression, they may start using drugs. Therefore, bad family relations,
neglect, mistreatment, physical and emotional violence are few family factors which increases
the risk of drug addiction in family members.

Communal factors

In many communities, the use of drug is considered as a symbol of high status. Elite class
members smoke and consume alcohol in bars and cafes. If one perceives that if he/she shall
become more famous and attract the attention of peers by consuming drugs, such individual are
likely to excessively consume drugs. Similarly, many teens believe that smoking cigarette can
depict their maturity. Pressure from clique can also influence addiction. For example, friends of a
person may force an individual to consume drugs to show that a person belong to the same
group. If a person refuses, he/she may be derided and excluded from the group. Once a person
start consuming, his/her friends may encourage him to excessively consume drugs. The more an
individual consumes drugs, the greater is his/her likelihood of becoming a drug addict.
Bullying, Physical, and Emotional Abuse

In many societies, bullying and physical abuse is common. Domestic workers are subjected
physical violence. Young children working in factories and workplaces are often tortured for
demonstrating poor workmanship. Similarly, in educational institutes and workplaces, many
people, particularly, women are bullied and even harassed. People undergoing through such
experience often acquire posttraumatic disorder. To relieve their stress, victims start using many
seductive drugs including but not limited to marijuana, cocaine, and inhalants. It is pertinent to
mention here that people who witness physical abuse and violence are also equally exposed to
acquiring drug addiction. It seems hard to believe; however, witnessing violence increase the
stress level of witnesses. Because of high level of stress, people are likely to start using drugs.
