SCOPH CIMSA UI x AIESEC in UI

Preventing mortality from non-communicable diseases is a goal from Sustainable

Development Goals number 3, Good Health and Well Being. According to WHO, 31% of all
global deaths are caused by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and over ¾ of the mortality rise
from developing countries.

Being the number one cause of death globally, CVDs need to be taken into account. In
Indonesia, out of all cardiovascular diseases, the highest prevalence is coronary heart
disease (CHD). The risk factors of CHD are mostly controllable by lifestyle adjustments.

In order to increase the awareness of CVDs and their preventions, SCOPH CIMSA UI
collaborates with AIESEC in UI within its annual program, Jakarta Health Care Project which
theme was related to our concerns. This project involved volunteers from all over the world
to build a real impact of disease prevention in developing countries. The project is divided
into two days; day one is for Exchange Participant (EP) Training, day two is for Medical
Check-up.

EP Training was conducted on the 19th of August 2018. The EPs were split into 4 groups,
each one was facilitated by 2–3 SCOPH members. The members explained the basics of the
cardiovascular system, diseases related to it, the risk factors, and the preventive actions.
The information will provide them with the knowledge to educate children about healthy
lifestyle as the preventive method for CVDs. To evaluate the EPs understandings, they were
asked to re-enact the training in a fun way, since the targets were children. The members
then taught the EPs how to measure blood pressure using mercury sphygmomanometer
and blood cholesterol level using the GCU device, interpret the results, and give relatable
education regarding the patients’ condition. The purpose of measuring blood pressure and
cholesterol level is to detect the presence of any CVD risk factors. By knowing this
information, we were able to aim the education upon the most adjustable risk factor;
unhealthy lifestyle.

On the 30th of August 2018, we held a free Medical Check Up at Desa Depok Kita, Citayam.
The local youth organization invited some of the local elderly to come to the venue a day
before. In this medical check-up, all of the EPs demonstrated the skills we taught at the
previous training, under the supervision of SCOPH members and our two beloved alumni(s),
dr. Lady Aurora (Local Coordinator CIMSA UI 14/15) and dr. Denisa Widyaputri (PDD CIMSA
Nasional 14/15 & RNDD CIMSA Nasional 15/16). Each SCOPH member was paired with an
EP. The EPs did the main procedures whereas the SCOPH members had the opportunity to
improve their public approach skills by educating the elders about their check-up results and
how to keep their aged body healthy. At the end of the event, the results from the elders
were collected as a preparation towards the possible advocacy with the local healthcare
facility.

By the end of the Medical Check-up, we applauded ourselves since we all did a great job.
SCOPH CIMSA UI x AIESEC in UI was a delightful experience for SCOPH members. The 2 days
experience was closed by a certificate AIESEC in UI handed to CIMSA UI as an appreciation
for this collaboration.
