Crompton Greaves Ltd. a member of the Thapar Group is India’s largest private
sector enterprise in the business of electrical engineering. The company is a
pioneering leader with over 65 years of experience and expertise in the
management and application of electric energy.

A brief history of the company goes as follows:

1927 CROMPTON PARKINSON LTD – UK appointed GREAVES COTTON Co. – INDIA as

Sales concessionaires for their products

1937 CROMPTON PARKINSON LTD – UK establishes their fully owned subsidiary

“CROMPTON PARKINSON WORKS (PVT) LTD in Bombay – India

CROMPTON PARKINSON WORKS started with manufacturing of Ceiling Fans and

AC Industrial motors. The distribution and sales of the products were handled by –
GREAVES COTTON, CROMPTON PARKINSONS LTD (GCCP) AND CROMPTON
ENGINEERING CO.

1948 Greaves cotton & Co. acquired 26% interest in the company and extended it to 50% in
1956. CP and GCC each held 50% of the equity share capital till 1967.

1966 CROMPTON PARKINSON WORKS (Pvt) LTD, and GCCP LTD amalgamated to form
CROMPTON GREAVES LTD to bring the combined activities of manufacturing, sales,
distribution, installation, servicing and contracting under the common management of
CGL

1967 CROMPTON GREAVES LTD went public

Crompton Greaves enjoys leadership position in most of its product line that come
out of the state of the art manufacturing plants. Adoption of latest technology in
design and manufacturing and a strong in-house R&D back up have helped the
company to maintain the leadership in technology, quality delivery and cost in all
of the products.

The company has the most talented team of engineers and a very involving and
experienced factory workforce. Dedication, strive to excel and honesty are the
strength of the team which have resulted an 8% growth on the revenue and 150%
growth on profit over the last year.

The front line of the company, the sales and marketing has the widest spread
network in the country. The company has also secured a strong position in export
of all its products and today are known for the quality all over the world.

MOTOR DIVISION

Crompton Greaves had started manufacturing

electric motors of various types way back in
1937. The company then known as Crompton
Parkinson had the technology from Brook
Crompton Parkinson, UK in the LT motors.
The company started producing HT motors in Alternators & DC Machines Plant

1970, with the technology from Brush Electric,

UK.

The founders of motor manufacturing in India,

have since then maintained its leadership in LT
motors till date. Today the market share of LT Motors Plant

segment in Indian market is around 35%. The
company manufactures the widest range of
motors starting from fractional horsepower to
10 Megawatts in its four manufacturing plants.
Other than AC motors, it has a complete range Large Machines Plant

of DC machines and a highly demanded range

of AC generators.

Collaboration, Technology

While the company has it’s own R&D set up

and a highly competent team of technologists it
has not restricted itself from looking outward
for the technological excellence. It has a
 Central Research & Development Facility
significant ongoing technical collaboration with at Mumbai
SIEMENS Germany for the DC machines.

The company also has a joint venture with Brook Crompton (Invensys) UK for
manufacturing of small energy efficient 3 phase AC motors. This is a 100% EOU
unit, which sells all the motors to Brook and cater to their market in Europe and
USA.

The AC Generators range was originated from a subsidiary of MEC-ALTE, Italy.

The Italy plant was bought and the plant and machinery were shifted to India in
1995 along with the product designs. The then product range of up to 100KVA has
now been extended to 625 KVA, keeping the same design philosophy as a base.

Other than the collaborations and the in-house R&D set up, the company has a
close relation with all the leading technical institutes in the country like Indian
Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science. The engineers at R&D are
associated with many international technical institutes. The central R&D set up has
full-fledged laboratory for material testing and development, High Power
laboratory, and basic research facilities.

Quality Assurance
All motors are built to the highest quality conforming to latest national and International
standards and certified by the relevant international authorities for use in almost every country.
At Crompton Greaves there is a new passion for quality. No
longer is it restricted to the end product - In the transformed
perspective that rules the company, Quality is viewed as a
consequence of a number of processes, checks and balances
that make it an every time phenomenon and a visible
hallmark across all manufacturing processes.

The Quality focus is reflected in a number of company wide initiatives that

include:

 The initiation of an organization wide Six Sigma rollout for identified

products to deliver "Product Quality As Perceived By Consumer".
 The receipt of the ISO 9001 certification across 26 divisions/regions of
which 14 are accredited for ISO 9001:2000 versions
  Three divisions have been accredited for ISO 14001 certification.
 As a means of ensuring quality inputs from vendors, the company has
initiated a continuing vendor assistance program to assist vendors obtain
ISO certification.
 The LT motors are compliant to international /IEC norms and ANSI/NEMA
standards for greater acceptance in international markets. They are certified
by CSA, CE, IECEx and BASEEFA

preferred source for motors in any industrial segment. It has significant presence in
all sectors like Coal, Oil & Gas, Power, Petrochemical, Fertilizer, Cement,
Railways, Construction, Water supply, Food and breweries, Pollution control and
waste management, etc. One of the biggest strength of the company is in the fields
of special motors those are needed in typical applications in the industries. It has
every motor solution, which benefits a wide range of customers like roller table for
steel plants, Arno-converter for railways, NEMA-D motors for oil wells, etc.

EXPORTS

Crompton Greaves export presence is spread across more than 60 countries. It

emerged as the largest Indian exporter for Power Transformers in 2002-2003 with
a share exceeding 50% of total export of this product from the country.

Crompton Greaves has a wide network of distributors and agents for motors
covering almost all the countries in the world. The company either sale the motors
in it’s own brand name or in some cases sale through the local brand name
depending on it’s market strategy. The products have all the significant
international certifications those are required. The wide spread distributor channel
also ensures local after sales service supports whenever needed. Off late, the
company has started focusing on US market and selling motors through some of
the leading distributors in US and Canada. It is proud to be the only Indian
manufacturer to have ATEX (EC) certified explosion proof motors, Department of
Energy (USA) listed EPACT efficiency motors.

The Company is proud to get associated with United Nation by supplying

Alternators with Kirloskar DG sets. The DG sets are being used in UN
establishments all over the world. CG alternators are also marketed in Lebanon,
South Africa. Currently many Alternators are being supplied to Iraq to cater the
steep demand of auxiliary power in the post war reconstruction in Iraq.

Other than direct export, the motors are exported through many of the Indian
OEMs and EPC contractors for various projects and requirements abroad. Some of

HAZARDOUS AREA MOTORS

General

An explosive atmosphere is one where a mixture with air, of flammable substances in

the form of gas, vapour, mist or dusts exist in such proportions that they can be ignited
by excessive temperature, arcs or sparks (a real danger).

Safety is of paramount importance in the use of electrical equipment in flammable or

potentially flammable atmospheres. Correct selection of motors for hazardous
atmospheres is therefore essential, bearing in mind the economics of the various types
of motor available.

Construction standards

Our low voltage electric motors of the different types of protection comply with the
relevant standards tabulated below.

The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for EU countries

ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosible) is the European Directive 94/9/EC. It applies to all equipment either
electrical or mechanical used in hazardous atmospheres both dust and gas. All equipment manufactured
after 30 June 2003 must comply with ATEX. The purpose is to remove trade barriers within the European
Community. The essential elements of ATEX involve:- Notified Bodies, Standards, Conformity
Assessment, Marking and Documentation. The ATEX Directive is complementary to other directives such
as Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive and Electromagnetic Compatibility. To show compliance
with any of these directives, equipment is CE-marked accordingly. It is further complemented by the ‘USE’
Directive (1999/92/EC) which sets down the requirements for the safety and health protection of workers
potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.

Equipment categories
Equipment categories are another change, which has been introduced. Equipment will now have a
category number appropriate to the Zone for which it is intended to operate. Zones remain the same as
previously for gas but in the case of dust, a new system using Zones 20, 21 and 22, has been introduced.

Certification
Certification by a Notified Body is only mandatory for equipment categories 1 and 2. Our motors have a
type examination certificate issued by EECS/BASEEFA .

Conformity assessment
A Quality Assessment (or Verification module) is carried out by a Notified Body - in our case EECS/
BASEEFA.

Licence (EEx d) and mark

This document is issued by the Notified Body (Certifying Authority), allowing the use of the Authority’s
distinctive mark. The licence is only issued after surveillance has been completed at the place of
manufacture. The licence is issued for a period of three years and on-going surveillance and the Notified
Body can carry out random checks.

IECEx Certificate – EEx e

The IECEx is a single global certification scheme based on the IEC

international standards. The IECEx Scheme applies to all Ex
equipment as per the IEC 60079, 61241, 61779, and 62086 series
of standards. It caters for various countries whose national
standards are either identical or very close to the IEC standards.

The IECEx scheme is aimed to reduce trade barriers caused by different conformity
assessment in various countries, and helps industry to open up all countries markets.
The countries currently participating in the Scheme include: Australia, Canada, China,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, United
Kingdom, United States and Yugoslavia.

Our Increased safety motors are certified under the IECEx scheme according to
standard – IEC 60079-7. This certificate covers the entire range and even for usining
motors on inverter duty application.
