Introduction
In 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was founded by
filmmakers during the silent movie era.

In 1929, when the first Oscars were held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, founders
recognized industry professionals for their work in nine categories, such as cinematography,
art direction, engineering, acting, direction and best picture.

This year, the Academy is hosting its 91st awards ceremony to recognize excellence in film
art & science in 24 categories.
