SCRIPT WRITING

THE LIAR by Henry James

( PART - l )
INT. Country House – Night
The painter was taken straight to his room to rest and change, tired of travelling.

The camera is placed at his back as he enters the house. OLIVER LYON was called down in
hall for the dinner.

SCENE -1:

INT. Dinner Table

As everyone seated at the table, the camera shows Oliver and then an Ariel view of the hall
was shown. He trying to find SIR DAVID disappointed at not finding him.

He observes everyone turn by turn with an artist’s fascination and camera moves with the
movement of his eyes.

The camera stops at a man seated four people off Oliver. A very descent and handsome man
who suddenly had caught Oliver’s attention.

Lyon asks the Lady beside him,

LYON

(Curiously)

Mam, may I disturb you to ask who that person is?

LADY

Oh , I see , he is COLONEL CAPADOSE, aren’t you already familiar?

LYON

No , I don’t miss . Can you tell me something?

3|Page

LADY

He's very famous in India. He tells anecdotes about his stay there and those are quiet amusing
tales.

LYON

I beg your pardon mam, but I still haven’t got a clue if I know anything

LADY

He’s very smart and intimidating. Rather the smartest in the house if you are not the one who
out smarts him.

(Lady being talkative proceeds having lost trail of her last words)

I have heard a lot about you and seen your pictures. They are admirable, but you are not like
them.

LYON

I avoid my own resemblance in my portraits.

LADY

Are you here to make someone’s portrait ?

LYON

(In a disappointed tone)

I have been invited to try my hand on Sir David's but neither had I seen him in the house nor
his pictures anywhere.

LADY

That is because he is superstitious about portraits as he thinks one would die after he is
painted and now is the only time he permitted to do so.

LYON

So now is he ready to embrace death?

LADY

Well, my best guess considering him of being ninety is that he no more cares!

LYON

(Smiling)

I hope I won’t be considered a reason of his death.

4|Page

The Lady started to eat and looked busy so Lyon looked around. The camera moves through
the party and as he bent a little to pick something up from the ground he saw her there.
Sitting next to his neighbour. She was busy looking at someone and Lyon instantly moved his
sight in that direction.

The lady's fixed gazewas on Colonel Capadose. The lady turned towards Oliver and he gave
her a friendly smile that she didn’t return.

LYON

(To the man beside him)

Sir, do you know who that beautiful lady is?

THE MAN

According to my best guess, she’s MRS. CAPADOSE.

LYON

(Irritated)

You mean that man's wife ?

THE MAN

Yes, probably

LYON

(Some moments later to the lady on his left)

She’s so sincere Mrs. Capadose.

LADY

The way you talk about her suggests that you know her but why are you asking about her
husband then?

LYON

I knew her a long time ago when I used to live in Munich and she married after that. I want
to know from you. Do you like her?

LADY

I think she’s rude.

5|Page

LYON

You only say that because she’s candid and straightforward.

LADY

Well everyone has their own experiences with people.

LYON (V. O)

(Staring interestingly at EVERINA and the camera fixes on her taking a close shot)

There’s a peculiarity in her appearance as she is an English woman but her features and the
close curls in her hair makes her look like a beautiful Italian lady.

LADY

Whatever you say , my likeness is towards her husband : he’s so intelligent.

LYON

When i knew her she was the most attractive in Munich where she lived with her family. All
the artists loved her but she was so arrogant she never liked any of US.

(After a pause)

I proposed her too. But she denied, she always wanted to marry well.

SCENE - 2:

As the dinner was over all the ladies left and the talk between the gentlemen started. That was
the first time when Lyon talked directly to CLEMENT CAPADOSE .He took a great interest
in the story that colonel was telling.

COLONEL CAPADOSE

There is no limit to one being unconscious that is what i tell you gentlemen from my
experience as when I was in Ireland I was pitched out of a dogcart and hit my head after a
somersault. They thought that I wad lead but they didn’t burry me and I stayed that way for
three whole months. That incident gave me time to rest my brain.

Another of his adventures was told by him and the audience listened carefully. The camera
basically focusing Colonel and drifting from him to Oliver time to time
6|Page

COLONEL CAPADOSE

A friend of mine in India who we supposed had died of jungle fever was buried alive in a
coffin.

Meanwhile Mr. Ashmore comes and everyone draws attention to him.

LYON

(With curiosity)

Was your friend really buried alive?

COLONEL CAPADOSE

Yes he was until I came to save him.

LYON

(Astonished)

What do you mean by that? How did you save him?

COLONEL CAPADOSE

I saw a dream of him wanting me to save him and i ran to save him from the Indian grave
diggers. Do you know i dun him up all alone? You see India is a strange country and
anything is possible there.

SCENE - 3:

Sometime later after talking a little with Mr . Ashmore (Sir David’s son) Colonel came back
to talk to Oliver Lyon.

COLONEL CAPADOSE

(To Lyon)

I came to know about you from Mr. Ashmore . I have heard about you and its nice meeting
you in person. My wife used to know you.

LYON
7|Page

Oh, I say her at the dinner table but wasn’t sure if she remembers me or not.

COLONEL CAPADOSE

She must be ashamed of you.

LYON

(Curiously)

Ashamed of me?

COLONEL CAPADOSE

It is about the portrait that you painted for her. That was literally the thing that made me fall
in love with her but please don't ask her to show it to you, she would be modified.

LYON

Mortified?

COLONEL CAPADOSE

ACTUALLY WE GAVE IT TO THE GRAND DUKE OF GERMANY. DON'T YOU

KNOW HIM? HE CAME TO VISIT US AND HE SPOTTED YOUR PICTURE THERE,
IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY AND HE DEMANDED TO HAVE IT SO WE HAD NO
CHOICE BUT TO GIVE IT TO HIM.

LYON

If it is a part of a collection then I have no objection on that.

COLONEL CAPADOSE

Haven't you made an acquaintance with my wife yet? Go talk to her! She would be very
happy to see you.

SCENE - 4:

INT. MAIN HALL – THE SAME NIGHT

The camera move around the main hall to spot the lady and Lyon spots her sitting at one end
of the hall. He goes to her.

EVERINA

I am very happy to see you, I was so excited when I heard that you were invited.
8|Page

LYON

I saw you at the dinner table too but wasn't able to exchange smile.

EVERINA

I think I didn’t notice please sit. Now we can talk comfortably.

LYON

So tell me do you remember the time in Munich with me?

EVERINA

Yes I do I had a great time there but now my father had passed away and all my siblings are
allocated to some kind of jobs. Tell me something about your personal life?

LYON

All I can tell you is that I never married anyone.

EVERINA

OH YOU MUST; THAT IS THE BEST THING TO DO IN THE WORLD. LOOK AT ME;
I AM SO HAPPY WITH MY HUSBAND.

LYON

Yes I met him in the dining room.

EVERINA

Don't you think he’s so handsome?

LYON

Not only that. He is so intelligent, handsome and smart. Also you can entertain people so
well. He has so much to tell of his adventures.

EVERINA

That is because we have been to so many places. You must see my little daughter, she is very
pretty.

LYON

Bring her to my studio someday. I would like to paint her.

9|Page

EVERINA

Don't remind me of paintings. It makes me embarrassed in front of you. It was very dear to
me and I knew that you painted it with love but we wanted money at that time as we were
living hand to mouth and you know what we got TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for it.

LYON

Was two hundred pounds the value of the vase you got? The voice that was a Grand Duke's
offering.

EVERINA

The vase? The Grand duke?

LYON

Yes your husband mentioned the incident to me.

EVERINA

(Panicked and coloured)

Oh, my husband!

Lyon after seeing her embarrassment change the subject and says

LYON

You explain that how happy you were at my success. So tell me would you have married me
if you had known that I would be so successful in future?

EVERINA

I knew that you were going to be successful but if I had married you I couldn’t have married
him and he so nice!

SCENE - 5:

INT. SMOKING ROOM – LATE

COLONEL

Do you know that house consisted of two distinct parts? Sir David bought the first part and
constructed the second one without damaging the originality of the first part.
10 | P a g e

There was a story about a skeleton that was found buried in the house but the family was shy
to talk about it.

LYON

My room is in the old house too does that corridor lead to the haunted room?

COLONEL

Do you also know about it?

LYON

I am just curious.

COLONEL

But don't try to go there until you have finished your job. or else you would also have an
urgent piece of work and would leave in the morning. As a young fellow was put there
because the house was full and he too did the same. This incident happened three days ago.

The two gentlemen were still talking when Mr Ashmore and some others followed him into
the smoking room. Mr Ashmore told Lyon about his father and after talking for half an hour
Lyon stood up to leave.

LYON

I hope I don't need any ghosts in the night.

MR ASHMORE

Ghosts?

LYON

You may have some in old parts of the house.

MR ASHMORE

(Smiling)

Oh they are just stories.

LYON

Even if you put me in that haunted room I want to run away like the gentleman who ran away
three days ago.
11 | P a g e

MR ASHMORE

I don't know what you are talking about there was no such gentleman three days ago.

And then Lyon left the room with his candle through that haunted corridor and into his room.

(PART - ll)
SCENE - 6:

INT. SIR DAVID'S APARTMENT – DAY 2

LYON

Why are there no paintings of you in the house sir?

SIR DAVID

Of the view that a gentleman should be painted only once in his lifetime. It is very awkward
if a gentleman’s paintings are hung all over his place that does not look beautiful at all.

LYON

And how would you like your portrait to be Sir?

SIR DAVID

I want it to be plain and pure as the way i look.

Why the gentleman painted both the Men sat and talked about all the relatives that came to
see Sir David. as the tour proceeded the very easily jump to capadose family.

SIR DAVID

I very well know the Capadose summary as am aware of three generations of their family.
Clement's father was an old crony.
12 | P a g e

He was an awkward fellow he married a girl and they had six children one of whom was
Clement. He has a military talent and he travelled to many places and only came to stay
during holidays.

But he is a thumping liar.

LYON

(Stopped painting and looked at David with surprise)

Thumping liar?

SIR DAVID

Well he lies about everything even about the times of the day. Maybe there are some people
like that in the world. He simply won’t give you a straight answer. My son’s tell me that his
friends really know about his habit but they don’t say anything to him because of his wife.

LYON

His wife ---- I see ---- his wife

SIR DAVID

But now I think she is used to it.

LYON

How can anyone in the world we used to set a habit?

SIR DAVID

I must tell you that when a woman loves a man she hides his secrets and his flaws. As
women's expert judge of their partner how can she not know? I I am also fond of her but I
have seen her backing up her husband.

LYON

(With disbelief)

Are you sure about it?

SIR DAVID

She is she is his life partner. She can’t expose him to the world.
13 | P a g e

LYON

She doesn’t need to say anything.

SIR DAVID

I’m sure in front of you she won’t.

Lyon had his head full of thoughts after this conversation with Sir David. He became a kind
of psychologist too while he painted his projects. His curiosity started to enlarge and I
started to look for times when he could talk to Mrs. Capadose when no one was around.

SCENE -7:

INT. HALL - HUNTING DAY – SUNDAY (DAY 3)

Sunday was the day when all the men went for hunting and Lyon found Mrs Capadose and
invited her to have tea with him.

LYON

I have talked to your husband. He is a very intelligent and handsome man and I have
developed a friendship with him in a short period of time, what I want to know from you is
that what kind of a man he was ?

EVERINA

Oh dear! How can someone describe one’s husband? I am just so fond of him.

LYON

I know that already.

EVERINA

Then what else do you want to know? He is everything that a man could be! He is kind, he is
a gentleman, he is a military soldier and he doesn't have any fault.

After observing him for three complete days Oliver came to a conclusion.
14 | P a g e

LYON

(Monologue)

He does not lie with any kind of hope to be good or bad. Neither he satisfied someone with
his lies nor he hurt anyone. It is a kind of art for him. And he paints his lies as I paint my
portraits. As David told that these kinds of recognitions came to colony in fits. There is that
time when he lies outrageously and is proud of it. What if anyone tried to show how wrong it
was that he said he would become dangerous very easily even he could hit someone in those
fits? But EVERINA never showed anything as she knew what kind of a man he was and
always even listen whenever he spoke.

LYON took his departure after completing his portrait. But that was a new beginning for
them as well he can back to town he called her and they talked even she told him when she
was at home. He asked couple’s permission to paint their daughter.

SCENE - 8:

INT. Lyon's Studio – Day

Everina came with her daughter for the completion of the portrait in the sittings. There was
silence all around when they sat together but no one got bored. The pintu demanded sitting
over sitting for the completion of the portrait. He waited for her to give him a sign maybe a
silent one to show that it would be better if she had married him.

(PART - lll)

SCENE - 9:
INT. LYON'S STUDIO – DAY

After about a year he managed to describe his desire to EVERINA as he proceeds;

LAYON

I want to paint the Colonel.

15 | P a g e

EVERINA

But Oliver you have already been so gracious by gifting us these portraits. How can we take
such gifts from you when we can’t even afford that luxury?

LAYON

If you don’t want it as a gift, let him sit there for my own profit and satisfaction. Let it be
something that I may ask of him. He is a very fascinating subject.

EVERINA

How is he so expressive?

LAYON

His nature.

EVERINA

So what you want is to paint his nature?

LAYON

Yes I do want that.

EVERINA

His nature is very noble.

LAYON

Trust me I would bring it out on his face. His very nature.

SCENE -10:

INT. LYON'S STUDIO – JULY

Colonel paid many visits to the painter throughout the month of July and that was the
happiest time for him as he got to paint the greatest subject of his life. And one day when he
was painting a lady paid them a visit.

GERALDINE

Sir I am in the search of a job.

16 | P a g e

LYON

But how did you get in?

GERALDINE

Through the servant’s gate sir it was open.

LYON

The must keep the door closed

GERALDINE

So you don't require me sir?

LYON

Well thank you for paying a visit but I don't have a job to offer you.

GERALDINE

You know you have had me.

LYON

I don’t remember.

GERALDINE

If you ever change your mind send me a postcard to mis geraldine mortimer terrace mews.

LYON

OK I will.

GERALDINE

You know I hate portraits because they are the reason we are unemployed.

LYON

I must say there are many people who can't even paint anything.

And she went out.

LYON

How annoying she was drunk.

17 | P a g e

COLONEL

She used to be very cute 10 years ago.

LYON

Maybe she was but now she is quite destructive upon her.

COLONEL

Well I must tell you that all she wanted was me not you.

LYON

Yes I noticed her pain you special tension what is it she wants from you?

COLONEL

She hates me and she follows me wherever I go. And I was really annoyed when I saw her
here but I wasn't shocked at all

LYON

But who is she after all

COLONEL

She is not a model she has just adopted that kind of an attitude. Maybe now she is 37 years of
age. She never forgave me; her real name is Harriet Pearson not Geraldine. I haven't seen
her for years. Well all that I give to her was five shillings.

Days went by an Oliver went to holidays .But there he wanted to look at the picture for five
minutes and that would be enough for him because he wanted to answer the questions that
were going on in his mind . On that thought he decided to go back to London.

SCENE -11 :

INT. COLONEL'S STUDIO – DAY

As he came to his home he was told by one of his workers that two of his friends had come
and they were in his studio .instead of going straight into the studio he went to the staircase
to see what’s happening in the studio.
18 | P a g e

He was Mrs. Capadose sobbing in her husband’s arms.

COLONEL

What is the matter darling? What happened to you? Why are you crying?

MRS CAPADOSE

It's brutal - it’s so brutal!

COLONEL

DAMN him! DAMN him!

MRS CAPADOSE

It’s all evident in the picture. -----. In the portrait it's all evident

COLONEL

Hang on! What is evident?

MRS CAPADOSE

All that he understood. He knows every single thing of it.

COLONEL

AM I NOT VERY HANDSOME AND SMART LOOKING GUY?

MRS CAPADOSE

Smart??

Ugly it’s so ugly! He has made what he saw and because of him everyone would see
everyone would know.

COLONEL

No, no one would see it if you don't like it. Come away we’re leaving. Not through the house
but to the back door you’re not in a position to walk through the house.

He came back after leaving his wife outdoors found a dagger and stop the picture until he
was satisfied with his self murder.

Lyon team downstairs knowing that he had won. Servant comes in the room.
19 | P a g e

SERVANT

(Astonished)

Who did that to the portrait Sir? Did they not like it?

LYON

Yes they were not happy with it. I did this to the portrait

He returned to France and waited for an apology letter from Capadose.

SCENE - 12:

INT. COLONEL’S HOUSE – DECEMBER

COLONEL

(To Lyon)

I’m so happy to see you my friend.

LYON

Then you think I must be having something.

COLONEL

Did she write you about the criminal act of her? She didn't want to wait and that's why I went
with her to your house. You know how much I like sitting while you are painting. And now I
have all the time in the world to sit while you paint. Now I would like you to begin my
portrait again.

LYON

THE PICTURE HAS BIG HOLES IN IT. Someone punched so many holes in it out of
Agony or rage I don’t know.

COLONEL

Is it really torn? Maybe I know who did it. That woman ---- those women is responsible for
this act. Don't you remember she was standing at the door when he came out of Oliver’s
house?
20 | P a g e

I told you about her. ---- GERALDINE. Don’t you remember Lyon who broke into your
house that day?

LYON

But how can she get in?

MRS CAPADOSE

Let's go downstairs for lunch.

COLONEL

She hated the picture don't you remember she said that she hated the picture that is because
she did this. She hates me and my picture and that is why she punched holes in it

LYON

Did you see the woman? And do you really think that she did this?

MRS CAPADOSE

How would I know whether she did it or not?

LYON

I will find her I still remember her address ----- Mortimer terrace muse

COLONEL

But how would you find her. Search place doesn’t even exist . Is there anyone else whom you
suspect?

LYON

No. No one at all. But the bottle was not in its place.

COLONEL

That’s my fault. I dragged it out of the corner.

MRS CAPADOSE

Didn’t you put it back Clement? I told you to.

This made Lyon sick. He couldn’t even eat. After the lunch when Colonel went away he again
asked her.

LYON
21 | P a g e

Did you see the woman? Which way was she going?

MRS CAPADOSE

She was going in our opposite direction.

LYON

And did she recognize Colonel ? Did she turn towards him?

MRS CAPADOSE

YES SHE LOOKED AT HIM BUT I DIDN'T NOTICE AT THAT TIME.

I really feel sorry for your picture (smiling).

LYON

I think it's time to leave.

Lyon came out of the house. He stood at the corner for a minute or two and thought to
himself that Colonel had trained his wife very well and he really was in love with him.

TRAVEL BLOG:
A TRAVEL GUIDE TO TURKEY :

The Blog is all about how to travel in Turkey, what kind of a country it is, general
information, travelling tips and pros and cons. So let’s start with general things.

LOCATION:
TURKEY is located in the South West Asia and it is one of the most beautiful and most
popular destinations in Asia. It was conquered by Sultan Mehmad and was ruled by him, He
made it a capital of Ottoman Empire and Muslims ruled over this part of world for centuries.
It is still a Muslim country.

What Turkey has to offer:

Turkey has an array of things to offer. As my guess the travelers would be tired of doing
things but still things would be left to see and places would be left to visit. As there is an
array of .
23 | P a g e

Bazaars

National parks

Mountains

Mosques

Food tours

Beaches

These places are mandatory to visit if someone plans to go to Turkey.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

If you ask about my opinion, I don’t think that there is any proper time to visit any kind of
place. If you have money in your bag or your bank account and you want to travel then just
go for it. Turkey has all the seasons to offer i.e. summer, winter, spring and autumn. So visit
at the time of year which you like the best. The season you admire the most and you think is
bearable for you.

VARIATIONS IN TEMPERATURE:

The temperature in Turkey varies from place to place. If you travel towards the northern areas
then the temperature becomes low. Wire if you go towards the South or the West then the
temperature is much higher than those regions.

TOP DESTINATIONS:

The top destinations in Turkey that one must visit are as following:

1) Istanbul

2) Cappadocia

3) Pamakkale

4) Antalya

5) Izmir
24 | P a g e

ACCOMODATIONS:

Turkey is a country where you can find both high and restaurants as well as low end
restaurants. So you don't need to worry about your expenses. If you don't want to stay at a
very high priced hotel then you can opt for a hotel that charges small amount of money as
compared to that high and restaurant or hotel.

FOOD:

Since that world has now become a global village we can find fast food restaurants and cafes
anywhere in the world where we go. So as per my opinion while travelling what should you
do is taste different kind of food and cuisine of the countries that they have to offer rather
than going for the fast food that you can even afford in your country and find it easily. As far
the pricing of the food is concerned there are both high end restaurants and the street food
obviously we find street food anywhere in the world we go.

ACTIVITIES:

There are some activities in Turkey that are free of cost for example hiking and beach
bumping. But what one should go for is,

Hot air balloon ride

Street food tour

Beaches

Visiting mosques

Visiting museums

TRANSPORT:

IF someone is trying to look for transport while he or she is visiting Turkey then they must
know that public transport is an efficient source of transportation while leaving the country.
And if you are not willing to go through public transport that you can either opt for airplanes
or you can take a bus to whatever location you want to go. rather than having only one or two
sources Take of these options about everything either it’s transportation food or travel
destinations.
25 | P a g e

SAFETY:

As far as the safety is concerned no country is safe from corruption. So even Turkey is not
that safe. But according to my opinion wherever you go you should take care of yourself and
your things because that these are your responsibility is not the responsibility of the
government or the police officers. But as far as we know that it is an Islamic country so
women are given their place their and they are respected and that is why it’s not a very
corrupt country to go to.

CONSERVATIVE COUNTRY:

Turkey is thought to be a conservative country because it is a Muslim country. People of the

west are not very habitual of wearing the clothes that cover all of their body so when you go
to Turkey it is advised that you should wear clothes that cover most part of your body so that
people don't mind your dressing or you coming into their country.

VISA:

If you apply for the visa online then it is a simple process and it is a very quick process in you
gets the visa in no time. It is not very difficult to get the visa of Turkey and if you live in
Pakistan then even the government is trying to omit this necessity of having visa to go to
Turkey I don't know how far is it in application but there is a rumor about it.
