Master in Adult Education and Training

2020 - 2022

The 2nd cycle of studies in Adult Education and Training of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the
University of Porto aims to:

 Develop specialized knowledge that fosters complex and critical reflection on adult education and training
policies and practices.
 Provide advanced knowledge and skills that allow the development of models and mechanisms towards the
conception, implementation, management and evaluation of training projects for lifelong learning of adult
learners, namely using resources, skills and methodologies that identify, recognize, validate and accreditate
non formal and informal learning.
 Provide advanced knowledge on research methods and techniques on the development of research on adult
education and vocational and career guidance.
 Train for the management of multiprofessional teams and for solving complex problems in an innovating way
within adult education and training.

Skills of a Master in Adult Education and Training

This course aims, based on advanced learning - symbolic and experiential, of exploration and of production – to
produce reflexive and critical analyses of diverse educative contexts and the development of
research/action/intervention processes, as well as the development of highly qualified professionals, whose profile
engages on the following skills:
a) critical analyses of structures, services, devices, networks, contexts, projects, methodologies, results and
effects – direct and indirect, personal, communitarian and societal – within the sphere of recognition and
validation of experiential learning and the reformulation of future career projects in articulation with learning
and with work, in a lifelong learning point of view.
b) design, management, implementation and evaluation of: intervention projects for adult career development
and career guidance; projects for recognition, validation and accreditation of adults experiential learning;
projects of formal education and adult training, appropriate to theirs specific characteristics, needs and
potential, regarding lifelong learning.
c) intervention within the domains mentioned in the previous paragraph, using competences of
multidisciplinary team work, contributing to the development of community dimensions and the dialogue
between social partners of adult education and training, with a commitment on the innovation of
referentials, curricula and practices that might create rich and stimulating environments for the
development of quality and empowering learning.
d) research in adult education and training, lifelong learning and guidance, career development and counselling ,
and in recognition and validation processes of experiential learning .

From these skills, this 2nd cycle course leads to an adult education, training and guidance professional profile of a large
spectrum, adequate to the assignments, needs and tasks of the recognition, validation and accreditation centers
(currently designated Qualifica centers), not running out, however, in it.

Curricular Structure

The 2nd cycle of Adult Education and Training is based in the research developed within both the Centre for Research
and Intervention in Education (CIIE) and the research group of the Center for Career Development and Lifelong
Learning, in a scientific field that establishes a bridge between the two scientific areas of knowledge of FPCEUP,
Psychology and Education Sciences, enhancing its social and professional prominence.
It aims to:
1. integrate the disciplinary contributes of FPCEUP in a global scientific field of knowledge regarding lifelong
learning issues of adult education and training, and of recognition, validation and accreditation of
competences and of vocational development of adults;
2. train adult education and training professionals and researchers that can develop a qualifying activity in this
area, through the development of specialized knowledge and capabilities that lead to an original and
integrating reflection generator of new strategic approaches for multiprofissional teams in this field;
3. provide, at the University of Porto, training based on research and critical reflection that qualifies
professionals in the field of Adult Education and Training.

Who should attend

Holders of a degree in Educational Sciences, Psychology, Human and Social Sciences or of other fields of knowledge
that develop or intend to develop professional activity in the field of Adult Education and Training.

Selection and ranking criteria and their weighing:

In accordance with Article 9 of the Regulations for the 2nd cycle of studies in Adult Education and Training the selection
is accomplished through the classification obtained by the analysis of:
a. the academic curriculum;
b. the scientific curriculum;
c. professional experience.
Weighing: - field of bachelor’s degree: 9%; grade of bachelor’s degree: 25%, other courses: 6%; additional training: 7%;
professional experience: 6%; experience as trainer: 3%; intervention projects: 9%; research projects: 7%;
communications in scientific meetings: 6%; publications: 7%; suitability of CV for the program: 10%; other: 5%.
