Objectives:
 Generate discrete time signals using elemental signals such as unit impulse, step and ramp (involves
signal addition, shifting, reflection)
 Find out the output of an LTI system from a) impulse response b) linear difference equation
 Interpret the application of correlation (auto and cross correlation)

Report problem solutions:

Consider an LTI system with the following linear difference equation:

2𝑦( 𝑛) – 𝑦( 𝑛 – 4) = 𝑥( 𝑛) + 𝑥 (𝑛 – 3) + 2𝑦(𝑛 − 1)

(a) Impulse response of the system , where 𝑥1( 𝑛) = 𝛿 (𝑛)

MATLAB Code and figure shown in below:
(b) Step response of the system, where x(n)=u(n)
MATLAB Code and figure shown in below:

(c) An LTI system with the following linear difference equation:

2𝑦( 𝑛) – 𝑦( 𝑛 – 4) = 𝑥( 𝑛) + 𝑥 (𝑛 – 3) + 2𝑦(𝑛 − 1)

Where 𝑥( 𝑛) = 2𝛿 (𝑛-1).

For this system first we plot 𝑥( 𝑛) = 2𝛿 (𝑛-1)

MATLAB Code and figure shown in next page:
Output signal y2(n), where 𝑥( 𝑛) = 2𝛿 (𝑛-1)
MATLAB Code and figure shown in below
Yes, i see some similarity between this y2(𝑛) and the impulse response that I got in question (a), y1(n).

Here I see that, the shape of two output signals are almost same. But y2(n) is 1 unit delayed version of y1(n),
and the magnitude of y2(n) is increased by 2 times than y1(n) .

So I can say that these two signals are almost similar.

(d) cross-correlation between y2(n) and y1(n)

MATLAB Code and figure shown in below:

Explanation of the cross-correlation curve:

Since I got maximum valu 87.78 when the value of time index is zero (at n=0), so these two signals y2(n) and y1(n) are
similar.and there is no delay in channel (Td=0).
Now, if transmission velocity is given then we can find the distance of any object from transmitter and receiver pair.
