1. Superheated Freon-12 vapor enters a compressor at 100 kPa, 25oC and exits at 2.75 MPa
100oC conditions. The process can be assumed as reversible polytropic. Determine the
necessary power input and the entropy generation?

2. Saturated liquid methane is pumped at 3 MPa with mass flow rate of 0.5 Kg/s from a large
tank at 150 K. What will be the minimum required power input?

3. Air enters a compressor of a Gas Turbine engine at 95 KPa, 15oC with volume flow rate of
50 m3/s and exits at 1.2 MPa. The compression process can be assumed as adiabatic, and the
kinetic and the potential energies can be neglected. Determine the necessary power input, and
the exit temperature for:
a) Reversible process, and
b) C =0.87

4. A cylinder/piston contains 100 L of air at 110 kPa, 25°C. The air is compressed in a reversible
polytropic process to a final state of 800 kPa, 200°C. Assume the heat transfer is with the
ambient at 25°C and determine the polytropic exponent n and the final volume of the air. Find
the work done by the air, the heat transfer and the total entropy generation for the process.

5. An insulated cylinder/piston contains R-134a at 1 MPa, 50°C, with a volume of 100 L. The
R-134a expands, moving the piston until the pressure in the cylinder has dropped to 100 kPa.
It is claimed that the R-134a does 190 kJ of work against the piston during the process. Is that
possible?
