Homework 1

Due Date: March 8, 2017

1. A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston-cylinder device. The piston has a mass of
3.2 kg and a cross-sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring above the piston exerts a
force of 150 N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure
inside the cylinder.

2. A piston-cylinder device contains 0.85 kg of refrigerant-134a at -10°C. The piston that is free
to move has a mass of 12 kg and a diameter of 25 cm. The local atmospheric pressure is 88
kPa. Now, heat is transferred to refrigerant-134a until the temperature is 15°C. Determine
(a) the final pressure,
(b) the change in the volume of the cylinder, and
(c) the change in the enthalpy of the refrigerant-134a.

3. 100-kg of R-134a at 200 kPa are contained in a piston-cylinder device whose volume is
12.322 m3. The piston is now moved until the volume is one-half its original size. This is done
such that the pressure of the R-134a does not change. Determine the final temperature and
the change in the total internal energy of the R-134a.

4. A piston-cylinder device contains 0.15 kg of air initially at 2 MPa and 350°C. The air is first
expanded isothermally to 500 kPa, then compressed polytropically with a polytropic exponent
of 1.2 to the initial pressure, and finally compressed at the constant pressure to the initial state.
Determine the boundary work for each process and the net work of the cycle.

5. Refrigerant-134a at 600 kPa and 150°C is contained in a spring-loaded piston-cylinder device

with an initial volüme of 0.3 m3. The refrigerant is now cooled until its temperature is -30°C
and its volume is 0.1 m3. Determine the heat transferred to and the work produced by the
refrigerant during this process.
