EDU 280 – 2001 STEREOTYPING

PROF. ROBERT SHKORUPA
A stereotype is a fixed, over generalized belief
about a particular group or class of people.
Stereotypes are often confused
WHAT IS A with prejudices, because, like prejudices, a
STEREOTYPE? stereotype is based on a prior assumption.
Stereotypes are often created about people
of specific cultures or races.
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON STEREOTYPES?

Racial Gender
Cultures
profiling profiling

Groups of Sexual
individuals stereotypes
One of the more common stereotype
examples is stereotypes surrounding
race. Racial profiling is based on stereotypical
RACIAL
assumptions because of one’s race, color,
PROFILING
ethnicity, etc. Racial profiling is the product of
stereotyping of racialized communities, and it
fuels further stereotyping.
Gender profiling is considered the femininity
and/or masculinity associated with a specific
demographic group
Some common stereotypes of men and
GENDER woman include:
PROFILING • “Men are strong and do all the work”
• “Women can’t do as good of a job as men”
• “Guys are messy and unclean”
• “Girls are not good at sports”
Cultural Stereotyping is when someone has an
opinion on another person based on who they
are, where they’re from, or the language they
speak without getting to know the individual.

CULTURES Stereotype examples of this sort include:

• “All Asians are good at math”
• “All Arabs and Muslims are terrorists”
• “All Mexicans are lazy and came into America
illegally”
Another type of stereotype involves grouping of
individuals. For example, Skaters, Goths,
Gangsters, and Preps. Most of these stereotyping
take place in schools. They can also be considered
as Social Categorization.
Some examples include:
GROUPS OF • “Goths wear black clothes, black makeup, and
INDIVIDUALS are depressed”
• “All blonds are unintelligent”
• “Punk’s wear mohawks, spikes, chains, and are
always getting in trouble”
• “All children hate healthy food”
• Sexual stereotypes, on the other hand,
SEXUAL
suggest that any feminine man is gay, and
STEREOTYPES
any masculine woman is a lesbian.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Stereotyping is not only hurtful, but also wrong. Even if the stereotype is correct in some
cases, constantly putting someone down based on your preconceived perceptions will not
encourage them to succeed.
Stereotyping can lead to bullying from a young age. Stereotyping is encouraging bullying
behavior that children carry into adulthood.
Stereotyping can also lead people to live lives driven by hate and can cause the victims of
those stereotypes to be driven by fear. It is a lose-lose situation, both for those who are
doing the stereotype and those who are victims.
WHAT CAN WE DO?

Educate Ourselves
• Learn more about the problem, increase your awareness of stereotyping and how to combat it.

Grow Your Mindset

• People with growth mindsets are less likely to become discouraged after making mistakes and
more likely to view difficult situations as challenges rather than threats. Adopting a growth mindset
can benefit everyone, but it might be especially important for those who belong to stereotyped
groups.
Get the Facts

• Getting clear about the facts on the ground is essential in order to uncover personal and
institutional biases that escape our notice. There are thousands of research studies on stereotypes
and how to overcome them.
