Better to be safe than sorry

Sem. Mark Ferdinand Besorio.

According to Desiderius Erasmus a Dutch philosopher, Prevention is better than cure. Indeed, Its
better to stop the bad things that are going to happen than to deal amidst its happening. It’s better
to straighten the curve of a young tree than a grown one. Preparing for the upcoming
catastrophes or plagues enhances our safety and protection against them. Prevention is needed to
counter the possible harmful effects of the upcoming misfortune.
During the outbreak of Covid-19, when the infected cases were just a small number the people
have a great fear about this virus. Lately, while the infected cases arose the fear in us is getting
lesser and lesser. It seems like the people are used to this pandemic already. Some disregarded
the protocols: not wearing mask and face shield. People adopted the happenings in a sudden.
There are speculations and rumours that this pandemic is just a trap of China in order for them to
uphold their economy.
The outbreak of this virus affected me personally especially my social life and sport life. I know
that I am not the only one affected and suffering about this pandemic but also the whole world.
All throughout the quarantine period: ECQ, GCQ and new normal, I barely go out in our home
because am afraid to be infected and also of the strict implementation of protocols in our place.
Even in our home, I barely go out in my room because during this period of quarantine I was
addicted in playing mobile games and my body clock was changed. I was a nocturnal person
during those periods. It also affected my lifestyle to become sedentary.
People are forced to stay home instead of going to work, school gym and etc. People can’t
socialize because of the implementation of the social distancing to prevent the spread of the
deadly virus. Mostly people in the urban places have panicked because of their food supplies.
Some have insecurities about their food. Due to what is happening to the world, people are afraid
and prohibited to stay outside, so we stock some groceries which can suffice our needs for a
month.
With social distancing, we are separated ourselves from the public. Sports facilities are closed,
churches are closed and places that cause public gatherings are closed. Curfews are also
implemented to minimize the stay of the people outside. If there was an urgent things to procure,
that was the time that I go out from my beloved room and home. I always secure myself by
putting a mask and a face shield to prevent or avoid the dispersion of the virus.
My quarantine routine was Eat, sleep, play mobile games and repeat. It was an unhealthy period
for me because no exercise and physical activity involved which made me a sedentary person. I
honestly admit that my quarantine period was not a productive period for me. I wasted my time
in the mobile games, but for me it is the best way to counter boredom and to avoid going out
from our house.
I realize that this pandemic is an eye opener for our irresponsible acts. This virus don’t choose
its victims. It can infect any age whose immune system is weak. Many families lose their loved
ones because of this virus. Many people lose their job due to this virus. Yet it teaches how to be
strong and courageous to face the happenings in different views. At this moment, I hope and pray
that we can end this global devastation as soon as possible so that our lives will go back to
normal and free from masks and face shields.
