TYPES OF RESTAURANTS
Coffee Shop- a coffee shop is usually an inexpensive, small restaurant where light meals and
refreshments are served. As well, it is a place business where coffee and hot beverages are served.

Specialty Restaurant- specialty restaurants are restaurants in which the concept of the
cuisine/food is given priority over everything else. It is not necessary that the ambience of this type
of restaurant will be fascinating. It may be an informal dining area or a luxurious restaurant. The
main thing is the cuisine/food which is served. It is special in its own way.

Grill Room- it is a restaurant or lunch-room where chops, steaks, etc., are grilled to order.

Dining Room- a room, in a home or hotel, where meals are eaten. Some restaurants provide private
dining rooms for hire, away from the main public eating areas.

Discotheque- a nightclub for dancing to live or recorded music and often featuring sophisticated
sound systems, elaborate lighting, and other effects.

Nightclub- an establishment for nighttime entertainment, typically serving drinks and offering
music, dancing, etc.
Example:
Marquee, Las Vegas Kaos, Las Vegas

Foodbar Restaurant- restaurant; bar, pub, cafe that serves also food
Example:
The Lion’s Share, California Holy Grale, Louisville

Fast-food Restaurant- also known as a quick service restaurant (QSR) within the industry, is a
specific type of restaurant that serves fast food cuisine and has minimal table service. Fast food is
defined as cuisine prepared by restaurants that cater more towards speed and low prices than
quality or nutritional value.

Food court- a food court is a place, for example, in a shopping mall that has several small
restaurants and a common eating area.
Example:

Café- is a restaurant that does not offer table service. Customers order their food from a counter
and serve themselves. A cafe menu traditionally offers things such as coffee, espresso, pastries,
and sandwiches.

Cafeteria- a self-service restaurant in which customers select various dishes from an open-counter
display. The food is usually placed on a tray, paid for at a cashier's station, and carried to a dining
table by the customer.

Bars- is a retail business establishment that serves alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, liquor,
cocktails, and other beverages such as mineral water and soft drinks. Bars often also sell snack
foods such as crisps or peanuts, for consumption on their premises.

INSTITUTIONAL CATERING
1. Industrial Catering- Industrial catering refers more to shops and factories where food is
made to primarily serve the needs of the employees. This is one of the most sensitive
catering, as it is believed that the biggest of the union quarrels arise due to poor catering
facilities provided by a company.
2. Hospital and Nursing Homes – Hospital catering developed when it was realized that
hospitalized patients need food with specific dietary requirements in order to get well
soon. Nutrition in hospital food translates down to minute details of amount of
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and other necessary vitamins and minerals required by
patients.

3. Schools (Colleges and Universities) - The main consumers here are students. The food
is made and supplied by cafeterias at very nominal rates. The cafeteria could have its own
fully equipped kitchen, and thus prepare food or it may even outsource food. The size of
kitchen and the kinds of equipment would depend on the number of meals the institution
serves on a daily basis.

4. Airline Catering-Catering to airline passengers on board the air craft, as well as at


restaurants situated at airport terminals is termed as airline catering. Modern airports have
a variety of food and beverage outlets to cater to the increasing number of air passengers.

5. Ship Catering- Ship catering is catering to cargo crew and passenger ship passengers.
Ships have kitchens and restaurants on board. The quality of service and facilities offered
depends on the class of the ship and the price the passengers are willing to pay. There are
cruises to suit every pocket.

6. Military Catering- Catering for Military is also sometimes referred to as welfare


catering. This service is provided to armed forces as a subsidy from the government, and
soldiers posted at various locations are fed under this scheme. The military provides
simple and nutritious food, and on some occasions, such as army day or any festivals,
there is a lavish buffet or feast.

9. Prison Catering- Some prisons support the dietary requirements of specific religions, as
well as vegetarianism. Prisoners will typically receive a series of standard meals per day
from the prison, but in many prisons they can supplement their diets by purchasing
additional foods, including snacks and desserts, at the prison commissary with money
earned from working in the prison or sent by family and friends.

10. Youth hostels- Youth hostel wasn’t just providing cheap accommodation to students
