Abstract

The blue eyes technology is an excellent method for this generation where we can
able to find out the human six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness,
sadness and surprise) through the computer system with different types of methods
and equipment’s inside the human body's like heartbeat blood pressure etc. By this
method the computers can find human expressions it acts like our personal
computer. it also identifies the human being confusions and interest within a
fraction of seconds through this blue eyes technology. in this method expression
glass is a most important process where the computers can determine the human
emotions and feelings. this technology is aimed to the computers can also be a part
of a human being in the world as a better company partners and they have the
ability to talk listen etc.

Introduction: -

Imagine yourself in a world where humans interact with computers. It has the ability to gather
information about you and interact with you through special techniques like facial recognition,
speech recognition, etc. It can even understand your emotions at the touch of the mouse. It
verifies your identity, feels your presents, and starts interacting with you. Human cognition
depends primarily on the ability to perceive, interpret, and integrate audio-visuals and sensoring
information. Adding extraordinary perceptual abilities to computers would enable computers to
work together with human beings as intimate partners. Researchers are attempting to add more
capabilities to computers that will allow them to interact like humans, recognize human presents,
talk, listen, or even guess their feelings. The BLUE EYES technology aims at creating
computational machines that have perceptual and sensory ability like those of human beings. It
uses non-obtrusive sensing method, employing most modern video cameras and microphones to
identify the user’s actions through the use of imparted sensory abilities. The machine can
understand what a user wants, where he is looking at, and even realize his physical or emotional
states. The BLUE EYES technology aims at creating computational machines that have

this term stands for Blue tooth (which enables wireless communication) and eyes because eye
movement enables us to obtain a lot of interesting and information. Blue Eyes system consists of
a mobile measuring device and a central and a central analytical system. The mobile device is
integrated with Bluetooth module providing wireless interface between sensors worn by the
operator and the central unit. ID cards assigned to each of the operators and adequate user
profiles on the central unit side provide necessary data personalization so the system consists of.

1.1 Term of Blue Eyes Technology: -

Blue eyes is known because in this term ‘Blue’ is for Bluetooth, which is known for wireless
communication and the ‘Eyes’ term is used for the eye movement used to identify the
information. The devices are fixed with Bluetooth processors which provide wireless
communication between sensors and the central unit.

Although, your personal monitor that can perform any actions. It can understand our emotions
even when you touch the mouse. It does the verification of your identity, also feels your
presence, and starts interaction with the user. For example, you have asked the computer to dial
to your home urgently. It than realize that the situation is very urgent and with the help of mouse,
dials at home, and make a connection.

1.2 Literature Overview: -

Since 1997, the team of IBM at its Almaden Research Center (ARC) in San Jose,
California is conducting researches on technology that aims at creating computational machines
that have perceptual and sensory abilities like those of human beings. It uses a non-obtrusive
sensing method, employing most modern video cameras and microphones to identify the user’s
actions through the use of imparted sensory abilities. The machine can understand what a user
wants, where he is looking at, and even realize his physical or emotional states. It has the ability
to gather information about you and interact with you through special techniques like facial
recognition, speech recognition, etc. It can even understand your emotions at the touch of the
mouse. It verifies your identity, feels your presence, and starts interacting with you. You ask the
computer to dial your home urgently. It realizes the urgency of the situation through the mouse,
dials your mother at home, and establishes a connection.

Blue eyes are one of the most studied topics in computer literature due to devices that can
sense human activity. The main motto behind blue eyes is to make emotional computers. The
process of making computers with emotions so it can sense the behavior is known to be as
Affective Computing. The devices have to detect even the smallest variations of our moods and
actions. For example, user may click a mouse swiftly or fast either in the happy mood or in the
angry mood.

Artificial intelligent speech recognition and Simple user interest tracker are basically
used to; understand the speech of the user as well as the interest of the user. Now, the computers
have to react in accordance with the person’s emotional states. This is done with the help of

Blue Eyes Technology

technical input devices like Emotion Mouse (to track emotions of user) through which the inputs
are taken accordingly.

N Findings of Reeves and Nass at Stanford University suggest that the interaction
between human and machine is largely natural and social, indicating that factors important in
human— human interaction are also important in human—computer interaction. In human—
human interaction, it has been argued that skills of so—called “emotional intelligence” are
more important than are traditional mathematical and verbal skills of intelligence. These skills
include the ability to recognize the emotions of another and to respond appropriately to these
emotions. Whether or not these particular skills are more important than certain other skills will
depend on the situation and goals of the used, but what is clear is that these skills are important
in human— human interaction, and when they are missing, interaction is more likely to be
perceived as frustrating and not very intelligent.

Current computer input devices, particularly the common ones such as keyboards and
mice, are limiting in capabilities. Interfaces should not be limited merely to the screen, which
forms the intermediary between the user and the results of the computer processes. Rather, the
subsidiary devices should also be brought into the equation. In a sense, computer interfaces
could be seen as a ‘peer’, or as one who responds activity to user input, as a reflection and a
response lf the user’s feeling and emotions, to better understand the true intensions of the user.

2.1 History: -
Based on Paul Ekman’s facial expression work, we can able to see the relation between a
person’s emotional state and a person’s physiological measurements. From Ekman and others on
measuring facial behaviors describe Ekman’s Facial Action Coding System (Ekman and
Rosenberg, 1997). One of his experiments needs some materials which is used to check whether
it is working or not including pulse, temperature, blood pressure etc. At last he got all the
records which is under the human emotions that is six basic emotions and he was succeed in his
experiments. From this work, Dryer (1993) describes his experiment with physiological
measures which can give different types of emotional states. The measures were taken from
human beings where we can able to understand easily they are heart rate, skin temperature and
somatic activity.

Paul Ekman’s facial expression work gave the correlation between a person’s emotional
state and a person’s physiological measurements, which described Facial Action Coding
System (Ekman and Rosenberg, 1997). His experiment involved participants attached to devices
to record certain measurements including pulse, galvanic skin response (GSR), temperature and
somatic movement.

A) Experiment:

The experiment involves devices attached to participants to record certain measurements

including pulse, galvanic skin response (GSR), temperature and somatic movement. Six
participants were trained to exhibit the facial expressions of the six basic emotions, anger, fear,
sadness, disgust, joy and surprise. The physiological changes associated with affect were
assessed and analyzed. Because of our need to incorporate these measurements into a small, non-
intrusive form, we will explore taking these measurements from the hand, which requires an
emotional sensor such as a mouse.

Blue Eyes Technology

B) Results:

The first analysis used multidimensional scaling (MDS) procedure to determine the
dimensionality of the data and suggested that the physiological similarities and dissimilarities of
the six emotional states fit within a four-dimensional model.
In the second analysis, discriminant function analysis was used to determine the mathematic
function that would distinguish the six emotional state which suggested that all four
physiological variables are sufficient to distinguish the six states.

2.2 Need of Blue Eyes Technology: -

The main objective of blue eyes is to design and develop smarter devices also, by creating
devices with help of emotional intelligence. To make this possible it uses various sensing devices
in order to evaluate the results. Eventually, creating computational devices with perceptual
sensing abilities that could sense human’s behavior and can provide physiological information.

 Human errors remain the primary cause of most natural calamities. Any unsupervised
social contribution can degrade the overall performance of a system. Using an automated
and permanent solution can avoid significant losses in such scenarios.

 Human intervention and supervision can result in a drop in vigilance and weariness. We
need an automated observer who can work uninterruptedly, and this technology offers a
perfect solution to such problems.

 Most importantly, we need it to develop a computer system that can feel, understand, and
reciprocate human behavior. A computer system that can listen to the talk and even
scream.

 The user may not notice important changes of indications causing financial or ecological
consequences, which is a threat to human life. Thus, it is crucial that operators brain is
involved in an active system supervising over the whole work time period.

Types of Emotion Sensors:

3.1 For Hand: -
3.1.1 Emotion Mouse: -
In Blue Eyes Technology, the devices have the strength to uniquely identify, even the smallest
variations in the moods of human beings. Say a person may strike the keyboard harshly or softly
depending on the mood of the person whether he is happy or in angry mood.

The Blue Eyes technology identifies this emotional behavior of humans just by moving the
mouse or touching the mouse or keyboard and the device started to react with the users. This is
done with the help of intelligent devices like Emotion Mouse.

Basically this Emotion Mouse can detect emotions with just touching the mouse. The Emotion
Mouse is designed to analyze and identify the user’s emotions such as sad, happy, anger, eager
etc. when the person is interacting with computer. The figure [Fig -1] shows the emotion mouse
implemented on a real mouse. The mouse consists a set of sensors which includes the different
infrared detectors and temperature sensitive chips.

Lab One proposed, non—invasive method for gaining user information through touch is via a
computer input device, the mouse. This then allows the user to relate the cardiac rhythm, the

body temperature, electrical conductivity of the skin and other physiological attributes with the
mood. This has led to the creation of the “Emotion Mouse”. The device can measure heart rate,
temperature, galvanic skin response and minute bodily movements and matches them with six
emotional states: happiness, surprise, anger, fear, sadness and disgust.
The mouse includes a set of sensors, including infrared detectors and temperature
sensitive chips. These components, User researchers’ stress, will also be crafted into other
commonly used items such as the office chair, the steering wheel, the keyboard and the phone
handle. Integrating the system into the steering wheel, for instance, could allow an alert to be
sounded when a driver becomes drowsy.
Information Obtained from Emotion Mouse: -
1) Behavior
a. Mouse movements
b. Button click frequency
c. Finger pressure when a user presses his/her button
2) Physiological information
a. Heart rate (Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG), Photoplethysmogram (PPG))
b. Skin temperature (Thermester)
c. Skin electricity (Galvanic skin response, GSR)
d. Electromyography activity (Electromyogram, MG)

3.1.2 Sentic Mouse: -

The Sentic Mouse is an experiment inspired by the work of Peter J. Lang, Ward Winton, Lois
Putnam, Robert Kraus and Dr. Manfred Clynes, that provides a first step toward designing a tool
to measure a subject's emotional valence response. The goal of the experiment is to begin to
apply quantifying values to emotions and ultimately to build a predictive model for emotion
theory. Peter J. Lang and others showed subjects a series of pictures and asked them to self-rate
their emotional response. Dr. Manfred Clynes conducted a series of sentic experiments, gathering
data from the vertical and horizontal components of

Sentic Mouse
finger pressure. Under the auspices of the Affective Computing research group, these three
models were applied to the interaction between humans and computers. Using a computer to
provide the affective stimulus to the human subject, an experiment was conducted which
combined all three emotion studies. An ordinary computer mouse was augmented with a pressure
sensor to collect sentic data as in Dr. Clynes experiments. The three measured results: sentic
data, heart rate, and self-assessment, were then readily compared against each other as well as
against the theoretically predicted results to assess the subject's emotional valence for each slide.

3.2 For Eyes:

3.2.1 Expression Glasses: -

The Expression Glasses are a wearable device that allows any viewer to see a graphical
display of a subset of the wearer's facial expressions. Currently, the glasses are capable of
learning an individual's patterns and discriminating between confusion and interest expressions.
Through two small pieces of piezoelectric film imbedded in the frames, the muscle
movement in the corrugators and frontalis (eyebrow) muscles is measured and translated to a
full-color visual display. The display allows a viewer to visualize confusion expressions of the
wearer of the glasses by watching changes in a moving barograph (red for confusion, green for
interest).

There are many reasons why the wearer or his audience may want to have access to
expressed emotions. For Human-to-Self purposes, this might include practice session feedback
for certain professions (such as counseling), where individuals are trained specifically to refrain
from expressing negativity. For Human-to-Human communication, a device like this would be
helpful in allowing a video lecturer access to the confusion or interest level of her students in a
remote location, providing a "barometer" of collective emotional expression. Since current
technology tends to inhibit access to individual facial expressions when lecturing via
videoconferencing, use of a device like the glasses gives students an opportunity to
communicate information about their experience to the instructor. Additionally, the anonymous
nature of the glasses allows individual students to express their emotions without necessarily
being forced to identify themselves.

3.2.2 Manual And Gaze Input Cascaded Pointing

We propose an alternative approach, dubbed MAGIC (Manual And Gaze Input Cascaded
Pointing). With such an approach, pointing appears to the user to be a manual task, used for fine
manipulation and selection. However, a large portion of the cursor movement is eliminated by
warping the cursor to the eye gaze area, which encompasses the target. Two specific MAGIC
pointing techniques, one conservative and one liberal, were designed, analyzed, and implemented
with an eye tracker we developed. They were then tested in a pilot study.

The user can then take control of the cursor by hand near (or on) the target, or ignore it
and search for the next target. Operationally, a new object is defined by sufficient distance (e.g.,
120 pixels) from the current cursor position, unless the cursor is in a controlled motion by hand.
Since there is a 120-pixel threshold, the cursor will not be warped when the user does continuous
manipulation such as drawing. Note that this MAGIC pointing technique is different from
traditional eye gaze control, where the user uses his eye to point at targets either without a cursor
or with a cursor that constantly follows the jittery eye gaze motion. Once the manual input device
has been actuated, the cursor is warped to the gaze area reported by the eye tracker. This area
should be on or in the vicinity of the target.

UCC & SPBCBA & SDHG COLLEGE OF COMPUTER APPLICATION & IT
Blue Eyes Technology

Both the liberal and the conservative MAGIC pointing techniques offer the following potential
advantages
1.Reduction of manual stress and fatigue, since the cross screen long-distance cursor movement
is eliminated from manual control.
2.Practical accuracy level. In comparison to traditional pure gaze pointing whose accuracy is
fundamentally limited by the nature of eye movement, the MAGIC pointing techniques let the
hand complete the pointing task, so they can be as accurate as any other manual input
techniques.
3.A more natural mental model for the user. The user does not have to be aware of the role of the
eye gaze.
4.Speed. Since the need for large magnitude pointing operations is less than with pure manual
cursor control, it is possible that MAGIC pointing will be faster than pure manual pointing.

3.3 For Voice: -

Artificial Intelligent Speech Recognition: -

Artificial intelligence Speech Recognition system in Blue Eyes technology plays an important
role in the very near future and it will be life lead by blue eyes technology. The user’s grammar,
noise type, speech, noise level and the position of the microphone are some important features
of speech recognition system.

Basically, an Artificial intelligence is done by the humans. This makes devices less expensive
and also come up with more power full, useful, and smarter devices. The data or words are
scanned and finds whether there is same match or not. And after knowing the key words,
accordingly actions are done by the machine. In this way, Blue Eyes technology enables the
users to communicate with the machines with their own languages.

4. SYSTEM OVERVIEW: -
Blue Eyes system consists of a mobile measuring device and a central processing system. The
mobile device is build up with Bluetooth module which provides wireless medium between the
sensors which worn by the operator and the central unit. The system consists of DAU and CSU.

How System Works?

 The major parts of the blue eyes system are DAU & CSU.

 The task of the mobile DAU is to maintain Bluetooth connections to get information
from the sensor and sending it over the wireless connection.

 To deliver the alarm message sent from the CSU to the operator & handle personalized
ID cards.

 CSU maintain the other side of the Bluetooth connection, buffers incoming sensor data
performs online data analysis, records the conclusion for further exploration & provide
visualization interface.

4.1 Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) : -

The DAU is the mobile component of the system used in the Blue Eyes technology. The main
use of DAU is to collect the physiological information from sensors and forward to the CSU for

processing and also verification purposes.

The Bluetooth module provides a wireless interface between the Central System Unit (CSU) and
operator consisting of the sensors. PIN and ID are assigned to the operators for the authentication
purposes. The device uses a keyboard, beeper and LCD display for the communication between
the devices. The information from the user is transferred using a mini jack plug.

4.2 Central System Unit (CSU): -

For wireless network connection, CSU is the next main important thing in the Blue Eyes
technology. The CSU mostly consists of voice information transmission and a wireless Bluetooth
device. This CSU is connected to a computer using USB wire, parallel and serial cable wire. The
socket named mini jack is used for accessing the audio data. The program that contains the
operators’ personal ID is communicating to the personal computer through the serial and power
ports.

4.2.1 CONNECTION MANAGER : -

Connection Manager’s main task is to perform low-level Bluetooth communication using Host.
Controller Interface commands. It is designed to cooperate with all available Bluetooth devices
in order to support roaming. Additionally, Connection Manager authorizes operators, manages
their sessions, multiplexes and buffers raw physiological data.

Blue Eyes Technology

The Connection Manager handles:

• Communication with the CSU hardware

• Searching for new devices in the covered range

• Establishing Bluetooth connections

• Connection authentication

• Incoming data buffering

• Sending alerts

4.2.2 DATA ANALYSIS MODULE : -

The module performs the analysis of the raw sensor data in order to obtain information about the
operator’s physiological condition. The separately running Data Analysis Module supervises
each of the working operators. The module consists of a number of smaller analyzers extracting
different types of information. Each of the analyzers registers at the appropriate Operator
Manager or another analyzer as a data consumer and, acting as a producer, provides the results of
the analysis.

4.2.3 DATA LOGGER MODULE: -

The module provides support for storing the monitored data in order to enable the
supervisor to reconstruct and analyze the course of the operator’s duty. The module registers as
a consumer of the data to be stored in the database. Each working operator’s data is recorded
by a separate instance of the Data Logger. Apart from the raw or processed physiological data,
alerts and operator’s voice are stored. The raw data is supplied by the related Operator Manager
module, whereas the Data Analysis module delivers the processed data. The voice data is
delivered by a Voice Data Acquisition module. The module registers as an operator’s voice
data consumer and optionally processes the sound to be stored (i.e. reduces noise or removes
the fragments when the operator does not speak). The Logger’s task is to add appropriate time
stamps to enable the system to reconstruct the voice.

UCC & SPBCBA & SDHG COLLEGE OF COMPUTER APPLICATION & IT
Blue Eyes Technology

Additionally, there is a dedicated video data logger, which records the data supplied by
the Video Data Acquisition module (in the prototype we use JPEG compression).

The module is designed to handle one or more cameras using Video for Windows standard.

4.2.4 VISUALIZATION MODULE: -

It provides a user interface for the supervisors. It enables them to watch each of the working
operator’s physiological condition along with a preview of selected video source and related
sound stream. All the incoming alarm messages are instantly signaled to the supervisor. The
Visualization module can be set in an off-line mode, where all the data is fetched from the
database. Watching all the recorded physiological parameters, alarms, video and audio data the
supervisor is able to reconstruct the course of the selected operator’s duty.

5.1 Applications of Blue Eyes Technology: -

1 To create “Face-Responsive Display” and “Perceptive Environments”.
2 Security
3 Blue Eyes Technology is going to find its way in the routines of human
beings with applications such as TV, washing machine etc.
4 Enable the computer to adapt a working style that fits user’s personality to
increase his productivity.
5 Automobile industry: -
Blue Eye can be applied in the automobile
industry. By simply touching a computer input device such as a mouse, the
computer system is designed to be able to determine a person’s emotional
state. For cars, it could be useful to help with critical decisions like: “I know
you want to get into the fast lane, but I’m afraid I can’t do that. You too
upset right now” and therefore assist in driving safely.

6 Besides this, a user can also operate the switch button for multiple devices
such as for TV, fan, and music playing system, and etc. this can be done by
calling them with different instructions which can be voice, audio or actions
in order to on or off simply by looking at them.

5.2 Advantage and Disadvantage: -

Advantages
 This blue eyes technology is used for the Prevention from dangerous
incidents.
 It is used to monitors the Physiological condition.
 Operator’s position detection in blue eyes technology easily.
 The reconstruction of the course of operator’s work

Disadvantages
 Doesn’t predict nor interfere with operator’s thoughts.
 We cannot force the operator to work directly in the blue eyes
technology.

5.3 How will Blue Eyes Technology Empower Computer Systems?

 It works on an uninterrupted sensing mechanism that uses high-end microphones and
video cameras to understand human actions.
 It uses various physiological parameters to notify and trigger pre-defined alarms. The
parameters include heartbeat rate, eye movement, blood oxygenation, and many more.
 It works on a personal area network linking mechanism which connects all supervision
system and operators.
 The operator observes the controlled systems using hearing and sight senses while the
physiological parameters are taken care of by the supervising system.
 Moreover, it also uses a high-end eye movement sensor integrated with a CMOS camera
to track the point of gaze and see what the operator is looking at.

5.4 Future of Blue Eyes Technology: -

At IBM’s lab researchers are tackling the lofty goal of designing smarter devices.
Following the movement of your eyes, the “gaze—tracking” technology uses MAGIC (Manual
Acquisition with Gaze-Initiated Cursor) to control your mouse. With MAGIC, the cursor
follows your eyes as you look around the screen. When your eyes spot on an object, you click
the mouse to select it.

Why not free up your hand and let your eyes do all the work? Researchers tried that and
found that the hand is quicker than the eye, or at least more accurate, says Morris, the research
center director. Also, current versions of the gaze tracking technology only come within an inch
or so of its target.

One limitation of today’s input devices is that we have to tell them what we want. When
you lay your hand on the Emotion Mouse, it will measure how you are feeling and react
accordingly.

Aside from pointing devices, researchers at Almaden are studying emotion technology
for use in automobiles, video games, remote controls and telephones. But it may be a decade
before this type of technology is readily available.

Blue Eyes uses non—obtrusive sensing technology, such as video cameras and
microphones, to identify and observe a user’s actions and to extract key information, such as
where the user is looking and what the user is saying verbally and gesturally.

These cues are analyzed to determine the user’s physical, emotional or informational
state, which in turn can be used to help make the user more productive by performing expected
actions or by providing expected information.

Blue Eyes technology can be implemented in computer training or education programs,

enabling computers to observe students’ emotional state and just as any good instructor, adjust
information delivery accordingly, in the future, ordinary household devices— will do their jobs
when we look at them and speak at them. Future applications of Blue Eyes technology are
limitless — from designing cars and developing presentations, to interactive entertainment and
advertising.

Chapter 6: -
Summary

The nineties witnessed quantum leaps interface designing for improved man machine
interactions. The BLUE EYES technology ensures a convenient way of simplifying the life by
providing more delicate and user friendly facilities in computing devices. Now that we have
proven the method, the next step is to improve the hardware. Instead of using cumbersome
modules to gather information about the user, it will be better to use smaller and less intrusive
units. The day is not far when this technology will push its way into your house hold, making
you lazier. It may even reach your hand held mobile device. Any way this is only a
technological forecast.

Blue Eyes system has been developed because of the need for a real-time monitoring
system for a human operator. The approach is innovative since it helps supervise the operator
not the process, as it is in presently available solutions.

The system will help avoid potential threats resulting from human errors, such as
weariness, oversight, tiredness or temporal indisposition. It is possible still to improve the
system. The use of a miniature CMOS camera integrated into the eye movement sensor will
enable the system to calculate the point of gaze and observe what the operator is actually
looking at. Introducing voice recognition algorithm will facilitate the communication between
the operator and the central system and simplify authorization process.

Despite considering only the operators working in control rooms, the system may well
be applied to everyday life situations. Assuming the operator is a driver and the supervised
process is car driving it is possible to build a simpler embedded online system, which will only
monitor conscious brain involvement and warn when necessary. As in this case the logging
module is redundant, and the Bluetooth technology is becoming more and more popular, the
commercial implementation of such a system would be relatively inexpensive.
