Chapter 1 Getting Started
Section 1 Introduction
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a subsidiary of the Indian
Railways that handles the online ticketing, tourism and catering operations of the Indian
railways.
IRCTC has an online reservation system, which helps you in booking tickets from the comfort
of your home or office. It has particularly made things easy for the people residing in remote
location.
Reservation and cancelation of train tickets can be done using official web site www.irctc.co.in

Section 2 Registration for Indian Resident


Following are the requirements for registering on IRCTC website for an Indian resident:
Individual Registration is FREE.
 A Valid, active e-mail ID.
 A working Phone Number.

Section 3 Registration Process


To register a new account in IRCTC:
1. Open a browser, type www.IRCTC.co.in in the address bar to go to IRTC Login page.
2. Click Sign up. The Individual Registration page appears as shown below.

3. Enter the user id of your choice in the User ID text box.


4. Enter Password of your choice in the Password text box.
Note- User name should be unique and between 3 to 10 characters. Password should be
alphanumerical and between 8 to 15 characters.
5. Re-enter the same password in the Confirm Password text box.
6. Select a security question of your choice from the Security Question list.
7. Enter the answer of your choice in the security answer text box.
Note- In case you forget your password, security answer helps you to recover your account.
8. Select your Preferred Language, Hindi or English from the list.
9. Enter your Name (First Name, Last Name), Gender, Marital Status, Occupation, and Date
of Birth in the Personal details section.
Note- please enter correct information in the registration form as it is required to verify your
account.
10. Enter the security characters as displayed in the box.
11. Click Submit. A Dialog box appears on the screen as shown in below figure to re-
confirm your e-mail id and mobile number as shown below.

12. Check your e-mail ID and mobile number and then click OK.

Section 4 Account Activation Process


To activate your IRCTC account
1. Log in into your registered e-mail account. Open the mail where user name and password
sent by IRCTC.

2. In the mail, click the link to activate your account. You will be directed to account
verification page as shown below.

3. Enter verification code in the Verification Code text box.


4. Click Verify.

Section 5 To Log In
1. Open a browser, type www.irctc.co.in in the address bar. The IRCTC login page
displays.
2. On the IRCTC home page, click LOG IN. The Login dialog box appears as shown
below.

1. Enter your user name in the User Name text box.


2. Enter your password in the Password text box.
3. Enter the security characters as displayed in the box.
4. Check the Request OTP box and then click SIGN IN. The verify OTP dialog box
displays. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

5. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number in OTP text box.
6. Click Submit OTP Code.

Section 6 To Log Out


 On the IRCTC home page, click Logout.

Section 7 To Retrieve Password


1. Click Forgot Password on the Login page.
2. In the Email text box, enter the registered email address. A link to reset the password is
sent to this email address.

Chapter 1 Online Ticket Reservation


IRCTC facilitates the users to book train tickets of Indian railways between the stations
and among the trains available in the route. IRCTC facilitates the users to book the train tickets
of two types.
Types of train tickets:
1. E-Ticket

2. Tatkal Ticket

Under the Tatkal scheme, passengers who plan their journey at short notice can book
their tickets in almost all Mail/Express trains through the Indian railways internet portal.
Tatkal tickets can be booked two days prior to the journey date only and the timings are
8:00 A.M (I.S.T) for booking in A.C coaches and 10:00 A.M (I.S.T) for booking in Sleeper
Class (SL).

Section 1 To Book a E-Ticket


1. Log in to your account using the Username and Password used at the time of registration.
2. On the Plan My Travel page, enter the name of the from and to stations of the travel in
From and To text box.
3. Select the date of journey of your choice from the Date of travel box.
4. Click Submit. The screen displays list of trains connecting the two stations available on
the requested date.

5. To book a particular train from the list, select the Class of your choice from a particular
train and then click Book Now. You will be directed to booking page as shown below.

6. Type all the details as Name, Age, Gender, Birth Preference & Senior Citizens (if
applicable)
Note- ID card will be required during the journey.
7. Enter your registered mobile number in the text box. You will receive an OTP to confirm
your reservation.
8. Enter the OTP in the Booking OTP text box and then click Continue Booking. You will
be directed to Payment option page as shown below.

9. Select a Payment option of your choice from the Payment option list.
10. Once your payment is successful, an e-ticket will be generated and the notification of the
same will be sent to your mobile number and registered e-mail ID.

Section 8 To Book a Tatkal Ticket


1. On the Plan My Travel page, enter the name of the from and to stations of the travel in
From and To text box.
2. Select Tatkal option.
3. Select the date of journey of your choice from the Date of travel box.
4. Click Submit. The screen displays list of trains connecting the two stations available on
the requested date.
5. To book a particular train from the list, select the Class of your choice from a particular
train and then click Book Now. You will be directed to booking page.
6. Type all the details as Name, Age, Gender, Birth Preference & Senior Citizens (if
applicable)
Note- ID card will be required during the journey.
7. Enter your registered mobile number in the text box. You will receive an OTP to confirm
your reservation.
8. Enter the OTP in the Booking OTP text box and then click Continue Booking. You will
be directed to Payment option page.
9. Select a Payment option of your choice from the Payment option list.
10. Once your payment is successful, an e-ticket will be generated and the notification of the
same will be sent to your mobile number and registered e-mail ID.
