Credit+ Calculus Related Rates Assignment

Solve the following problems using the method of related rates. Show all your work neatly and clearly.

Question 1
Droplets of water fall onto the calm surface of
water in a reservoir as shown in the image to the
right. This causes ripples in the form of
concentric circles.

The radius of the outermost ripple is increasing

at a constant rate of 10 cm per second.

When the radius of the rippling water is

1 m, at what rate is the total area of the
rippling water changing?

Question 2
An airplane is flying at a constant speed along a
horizontal flight path that will take it directly over
a tracking tower, as shown in the image to the
right.

A stationary observer is watching the airplane.

At that moment, the airplane is at an altitude of
6000 m.The distance between the observer and
the airplane is 10 km and is increasing at a rate
of 400 km/h.

What is the speed of the plane?

Question 3
An image sensor located in the ground is
recording the take-off of a rocket that is
traveling vertically according to the following
equation:

Y(t) = 50t2
where Y is the altitude measured in metres and
t is the time since lift-off measured in seconds.

The camera is 2 km from the launch pad,

measured along the ground.

Find the rate of change in the angle of

elevation ( q ) of the camera, 5 seconds after
the rocket's lift-off.
