Polished Rods
Introduction
The polished rod is manufactured from high quality alloy steel or stainless Steel, which has high tensile
strength, smooth surface and long service life. The polished rod is manufactured as per API Spec 11B and
petroleum industry standard. The polished rod mainly has two types: API polished rod and end upsetting
polished rod. The API polished rods are connected by the polished rod coupling or crossovers, and the end
upsetting polished rods are connected to the sucker rods directly for application.

Manufacturing Process
The polished rods are manufactured and inspected to be fully comply with API-11B spec. Pin threads is
cold-formed and rolled, creating a much stronger pin compared to old cut thread or burnished process. The
rolled threads improve the fatigue performance of the polished rod significantly and reduces common
polished rod failures at thread roots dramatically.

Material Selections
Alloy steel is manufactured from a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (4140) and designed for light to
heavy loads, at any depth in mild to medium corrosive well fluids, which offers improved abrasion
resistance and maximum fatigue resistance. This is the most popular material choice for polished rod.

For corrosive applications, it is suitable to use alloy steel (4140) with spray metal finish. The nickel-
chromium surface increases corrosion resistance.

00Cr Stainless Steel is a unique new type of corrosion resistant product independently developed by our mill,
and owns a number of national invention patents. Through special steelmaking and rolling process, its series
of products are able to resist corrosion and various complex stress in the harsh downhole environment.

High strength stainless steel 00Cr12 outperforms 4140 alloy steel in corrosive environments, its excellent
tensile and torque strength makes it ideally suited for PC pumps, this grade exhibits excellent resistance to a
wide variety of corrosive media, including salt water. 00Cr12 Stainless steel polished rods are designed for
any loads at any depth where corrosion is a problem.

Rod Couplings
Sucker rod (SR) couplings, polished rod (PR) couplings and
subcouplings are available in API Class T, SM, High Strength
(including Stainless Steel) and in all sucker rod sizes. Couplings are
made from special quality cold-formed steel extrusion or cold
drawn seamless mechanical steel tubing. SR couplings, PR
couplings and Subcouplings are available in Full Size, Slim Hole &
Oversized outside diameters. All couplings are furnished with a
cold-formed, fully rolled thread to provide additional strength and fatigue resistance.

Traditional T and SM couplings both have limitations operating in severely deviated well sections, especially when
corrosion is present. SM couplings can better resists corrosion and does not wear easily; however, its higher surface
hardness often cause excessive tubing wear. The T coupling is softer and does not cause tubing wear, but under the
combined effect of corrosion and abrasion, it does not last long before it has to be replaced. As a result, the operator
has to choose between frequent work-over jobs to replace T coupling, or dealing with tubing leaks. Neither is
desirable.
00Cr12 SS High Strength (HS) Coupling is the best solution to the above environments, the material is a special
Stainless Steel and can resist common corrosive agents including CO2, Cl- and bacteria. 00Cr12SS outperforms SM
couplings even in the harshest environment. At the same time, 00Cr12SS reduces tubing wear risks even in the
severely deviated wells with significant amount of side loading.

Package
The polished rod has strict package. It has 7 layers of package in total:

Loading
Loading container: 40' OT (40' open top container) and 40' GP (40' general purpose container).

Storage
1. Place sills under each spacer, avoid any bump, scratch and abrasion etc.
2. Stack bundles with spacers over each other
3. Handle bundles one at a time with proper lifting equipment
4. Check the thread lubricate condition regularly and apply anti-rust oil if necessary.
5. Stored indoors, covered to avoid the solarization and rain if stored outdoors.
