Requirements
The study includes:
○ The name of the chosen botanical
○ Dissected anatomy of the botanical
○ Watercolour swatches of colours found in the botanical, and how you created the
colour (e.g. Cobalt Blue & Quin Violet)
○ Research and information about the botanical that will guide your Sprite creation.
○ A minimum of 2 different character design ideas
○ A minimum of 2 different background ideas

Please refer to the Sketchbooks Requirements for Major Projects PDF under Content in D2L.

Part 2: Botanical Sprite

Composition
● Background: The foreground and background were considered, creating depth
● The placement and pose of the sprite is purposeful
● The size of the sprite is appropriate for the background
● The elements of design were considered: line, shape, form, colour, value, texture, space
● Students incorporated elements from research to creatively design the personified Sprite

Craft
● The white border is crisp and clean
● The paper is flat and not damaged/crumpled
● Time was spent layering the watercolours so that the colours are vibrant and not muddy
● Initial pencil marks are not visible
● Students created new colors to realistically represent the botanical.

Skills
• Students applied the paint with smooth graduations to describe accurate highlights and
shadows in their composition.
• Students used appropriate watercolour techniques to develop detail in their image.
• Colours are blended in a manner so as to mimic their source images.
• Exploration of the character is evident in the pose and proportion of the final character.
