ITBS/CogAT

Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and Cognitive Abilities Test

September 20, 2007

WHAT?
CogAT: Cognitive Abilities Test measures school
readiness; it is also an assessment of mental ability.
Reported as SAS (Standard Age Score).

ITBS: Iowa Tests of Basic Skills are achievement

tests.

These are NRT (norm referenced tests) which compare

our students to a national sample.
WHY?

IT’S THE LAW

Georgia law requires the administration of a NRT at

grades 3, 5, and 8. The ITBS, which is published by
the Riverside Publishing Company, is the state
mandated test.

2007-2008 is last year of Riverside contract.

WHY?

EARLY IDENTIFICATION

Test results are also used to assist in identifying students

needing additional help or an accelerated curriculum.
WHY?

LOCALLY MANDATED
The Glynn County Board of Education supports the
administration of a mental ability test. Like the ITBS,
the CogAT is published by Riverside Publishing. Our
county saves money by using both tests from the same
publishing company.
The state mandates the ITBS in grades 3, 5, and 8. Our
Board of Education also supports the administration
of the ITBS in first grade.
