Figures of Speech

A figure of speech is a word or phrase used in a non-literal sense for rhetorical or vivid effect

Simile

A simile is a comparison of two things using the words "like" or "as" Ex: She was like a mother to me.

Metaphor

A metaphor is a comparison of one thing to another without the use of the words "like" or "as" Ex:
Mary was a chicken.

Personification

Personification is the giving of human qualities to a non-human thing. Ex: The last piece of pie was
calling his name.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is the use of words that make a sound. For example, "Boom!" Thunder woke me from a
deep sleep.

Alliteration

Alliteration is the use of two or more same consonant sounds in a row. Ex: Cory cried when he the new
puppy his parents brought home.

Idiom

An idiom is a saying that has a meaning other than its literal meaning. Ex: It's a piece of cake!

Hyperbole

A hyperbole is an exaggeration. It's not sarcasm. Ex: I have a million things to do today!
