Preface

A communication electronic circuit is one of the core courses of electronic information

major. This course aims at helping students master the composition, principle, proper-
ties and analysis methodology of basic functional circuits. With the independent par-
allel experiment course, students are also trained for the techniques of designing,
installation and testing those circuits along with the ability of circuit analysis, design
and application. It helps students build solid and necessary foundation for future and
practical work. The book covers the transitional area between low-frequency and
high-frequency wireless circuits. Specifically, it introduces the fundamental physical
principles related to the operation of a typical wireless radio communication system
and functional circuit modules. It is different from other textbooks that we are not at-
tempted to discuss all the possible topics related to wireless communication circuits
and system. However, many textbooks cover wireless communication systems com-
prehensively but with relatively few details, which are not suitable for students’ in-
depth self-study. In this textbook, we have chosen some topics to discuss in more
depth, and thus provide detailed mathematical derivations, applied approximations
and analogies. In our experiences, the chosen topics are suitable for a one semester,
3 h per week, senior undergraduate engineering major. Our intention is to provide a
logical relation that flows smoothly from one chapter to the next, hoping that the
readers will find it easy to understand it. Our main inspiration in writing this English
textbook came from the requirement of bilingual teaching for the students of our
school, in Hangzhou Dianzi University. Some authors write textbook covering many
topics at a high level. Other similar books cover fewer fundamental principles with
more details. We choose the latter according to our undergraduate level. All of the
contents in this textbook are focused on the basic concepts and fundamental radio-
frequency circuits working principles, which will provide necessary knowledge and
abilities for engineering students entering the field of wireless communication elec-
tronics. Therefore, the intended potential readers for this book are, primarily, senior
undergraduate electronic engineering students preparing for their careers in commu-
nication electronics. Meanwhile, our hope is that graduate engineering students will
find this book a useful reference.
The book covers the following topics:
(1) Introduction to the basic knowledge of the communication electronics circuits.
This chapter serves as a preliminary introduction to the communication elec-
tronic circuit system. Contents include the working principle of basic receiver
and transmitter units, operating principle of LC resonant circuit including reso-
nance condition, resonant characteristics, resonant curves and the functions in
the circuit, as well as characteristics of nonlinear devices.
(2) Radiofrequency amplifiers. Both small signal tuned amplifiers and class-C large
power amplifiers are analyzed in detail. High-efficiency power amplifier class-E,
class-F and class-EF power amplifiers are briefly introduced as well.

(3) Sinusoidal oscillators. In this chapter, we study various types of oscillators. The
main focus is the understanding of principles of different oscillators, together
with the comparison of their advantages and disadvantages.
(4) Amplitude modulation, demodulation and frequency mixing. The mechanism
and typical circuits of amplitude modulation and demodulation processes are
discussed.
(5) Angle modulation and demodulation. The mechanism and typical circuits of
frequency/phase modulation and demodulation processes are discussed.
(6) Phase lock loop. It discusses the important control circuits in modern commu-
nication electronics of phase lock loop including its basic principle, circuit
composition, mathematical model and applications.
