Outline

Statement Of Purpose:

- The point of the south Ossetian war?

The point of the South Ossetia War was that Georgia was trying to reoccupy South Ossetia

which was once part of Georgia before the fall of The Soviet Union, while Russian objective was

to restore South Ossetia to the state it was in prior to the conflict which is currently part of

Russia (maybe there actually was a Russian attack to which Georgia retaliated to but there is no

evidence to support this)

- The importance or strategic implication of south Ossetia in the conflict?

The State of South Ossetia is located at the heart of Georgia making it strategically significant

fopr both countries to gain control over the region

POV:

I support russia because in the grand scheme of things, they are trying to restore de-facto control

to South Ossetia all the while giving them Russian passports and allowing them to maintain their

cultural significance. Whereas, Georgia, is more interested in maintaining South Ossetia more on

the basis of the land and their geographical significance to Georgia.

The thesis “Conflict analysis of the Ossetia War; the regional and political motives of Russia and

Georgia in gaining control over South Ossetia” focuses on:

 The historical conflicts that occurred between Georgia, Russia and South Ossetia

 Presenting the root causes of Ossetia War

 The impact of the war within the region

 The outcome of the wars and the current status and agreement between the nations

This paper is meant to help bring to light, the strife of the South Ossetian people who have been

caught between the conflicts of its neighbours. The information here can help contribute to

further understand the rationale of the parties involved and help come to a logical situation that

would help attempt a peaceful resolution of the conflict and return South Ossetia to the state it

was in prior to all the conflict.

Background

Before the break-up of the Soviet Union, South Ossetia operated as the South Ossetia

Autonomous Oblast, an autonomous region within the Georgian SSR [2].As the Soviet Union

began to fall apart in 1989; the Georgian nationalist move to gain independence gained strength.

This movement also encouraged the Ossetian nationalist to call for independence and for the

formation of the “South Ossete autonomous republic”. In November 1990 a Soviet assembly

declared South Ossetia a “Soviet republic separate from Georgia” [3]. When the Soviet Union

collapsed in 1991, Georgia gained its independence and became an internationally recognized

country. It also declared South Ossetia a part of Georgia and considered “South Ossete

autonomous republic” abolished [1] [3]. Russia however continues to disapprove of this analogy.
