Background
Before the break-up of the Soviet Union, South Ossetia operated as the South Ossetia
Autonomous Oblast, an autonomous region within the Georgian SSR [2].As the Soviet Union
began to fall apart in 1989; the Georgian nationalist move to gain independence gained strength.
This movement also encouraged the Ossetian nationalist to call for independence and for the
formation of the “South Ossete autonomous republic”. In November 1990 a Soviet assembly
declared South Ossetia a “Soviet republic separate from Georgia” [3]. When the Soviet Union
collapsed in 1991, Georgia gained its independence and became an internationally recognized
country. It also declared South Ossetia a part of Georgia and considered “South Ossete
autonomous republic” abolished [1] [3]. Russia however continues to disapprove of this analogy.
