EXPERIRENT NO. 8
VISCOSITY TEST

1. SCOPE
Viscositydenotesthefluidpropertyofbituminousmaterialanditisameastfreofresistanceto
flow. At the application temperatul'e, this characteristic greatly influences the strength of
resultingpavingmixes.Loworhichviscosityduringcompactitnormixinghasbeenobserved

resulting mix is heterogeneous, hence low stability values. And at low viscosity instead of
providingaunifomfilmoveraggregates,itwilllubricatetheaggregateparticles.Orificetype
viscometers are used to indirectly find the viscosity of liquid binders like cutbacks and
emulsions.

2. FUROL VISCOSITY TEST:

It is measured by recording the time in sec taken by 50 cc of material to flow through a
specifiedorificeofstandarddimensionintoareceiveratspecifiedtemperature.Longerthe
ire of flow, higher the viscosity.

ForTar,10mmorificeviscometerisusedandcalledtar-viscometer.Intlriscase,also,timein
see. for 50 cc tar to flow through the orifice is defined as the viscosity of tar at the given
temperature.

2.1 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

A viscometer consists of a cylindrical cup approxinately 1.2" (3 cm) in diameter and 5.0"
(12.5cm)high.Anoutlettutie0.12"(0.3cm)indianeterand0.5"(1.27cm)longisfittedat
the bottom of the cup.

2.2 PROCHDURE:

_ this small outlet at the bottom of the cup at a specified

temperature(25,50,60,80and100°c)whichiscontrolledbyheatingtheoilbath.Thetimein
seconds required for 60 ml of bitumen to pass throuch this orifice, is designated as the
viscosityofthematerial.
