Why Power Quality is important?

Risks Symptoms Potential causes

Dips or Sags • Lighting dimming, computer lockups, • Starting large loads, especially large inductive
relay and contactor chatter or complete • Similar operations in neighboring facilities
dropout, equipment and system • Severe weather
shutdowns
Swells • Failed power supply • Sudden load decrease
• Overvoltage shutdowns on VFD • Capacitor bank switching
Harmonics • Overheated neutral conductors / • Nonlinear loads such as switching power supplies
transformers / inductive loads • Converter sections of uninterruptible power supply (UPS), VFDs
• Shutdowns of electronic equipment and battery chargers
Unbalance • Overheated three-phase motors and • Unbalanced loads across individual phases of three-phase panelboards
transformers • Unbalanced utility supply
• Open-delta transformers
Transients • Flashover and arcing effects in • Lightning strikes

What are the harmonics ?

• In a normal ac power system, voltage varies sinusoidal

• With non-linear loads such a rectifiers and switches, the
current draw is not
necessarily sinusoidal
• The waveform is then complex
• The complex waveform can be decomposed into individual
sinusoidal components
• These harmonic components impact motors, transformers,
cabling and other
electrical components

9 © 2020 | Fluke Industrial Group

Identifying harmonics waste

Power quality analyzers display a spectrum graph of harmonic components present in a system, but the graph on
its own does not quantify the amount of energy wasted by harmonics.

Harmonics cause:
• unusable power, drawn from utility but not
converted to actual work
• high current to flow in neutral conductors
• motors and transformers to run hot, decreasing
efficiency and shortening lifespan
• increased susceptibility to voltage sags
• reduced transformer efficiency — or, a larger
unit is required to accommodate harmonics.

Fluke 438 Series II: Power Quality And Motor Analyzer

Power Quality will be a challenge as it is more complicate than decades ago. Modern technology in control
Very
system like PLC, LED lighting, Computer, Variable Speed Drives and motor in system has introduce risks like Important
harmonics and unbalances that can cause random or sudden system breakdown .Transient or overheating
of motors is also another power related issues that can shorten the lifespan of your system.

Motor Analyzer Mode _ADVANCE LEVEL

• What is it?
– Dashboard screens that show the NEMA derating of a
motor, mechanical read outs like torque, speed, and
efficiency

• What is the problem?

– Not knowing how efficient your motor is and if you might
be able to save money by changing the process or
replacing the motor so that it is properly sized for the
process or replacing the old motor with a more energy
efficient motor

• What value does analysis provide?

– Get a quick view of the mechanical measurements
without the hassle of taking apart your motor and moving
it to a test bed
– Get real/operational measurements and not the ideal
(non-realistic) measurements taken on a dynamometer
15 © 2020 | Fluke Industrial Group

15

Derating motors

When harmonics and unbalance are present the motor is likely

to run hotter than the specification, the purpose of the NEMA derating
is to ensure that the motors continue to run within specifications.
• The derating curve shows the
performance of a motor under
test.
• Each of the points shows the
performance as the load
changes and the state of the
power quality.
• Points in the green zone are
within acceptable performance
limits.
• Operation in the yellow zone is
acceptable for short periods.
• Points in the red zone should be
avoided as operation in the area
may potentially damage the
motor

Case Study

Electric motors are the key component in many industrial processes and can account for up to 70% of the total energy
consumed in an industrial plant and consume up to 46% of all generated electricity worldwide.
Traditional motor testing methods

The test bed system may seem straight forward but there are several inherent disadvantages:

1.The motor must be removed from service.

2.The motor load is not truly representative of the load the motor serves while in service.
3.During testing the operation must be suspended (creating downtime) or a replacement
motor must be temporarily installed.
4.Torque sensors are expensive and have a limited operating range, so several sensors may be
needed to test different motors.
5.A motor test bed that can cover a wide range of motors is expensive and the users of this
type of test bed are typically specialist motor repair or development organizations.
6.“Real world” operating conditions are not taken in to account.

Case Study (New Testing Approach)

How it works
The Fluke 438-II unit provides mechanical measurements (motor rotating speed, load, torque and efficiency) by applying proprietary
algorithms to electrical waveform signals

Electric power is measured using the input

current and voltage waveforms.

Upon obtaining torque and speed estimates,

the mechanical power (or load) is computed
using torque times speed.

The motor efficiency is computed by dividing

the estimated mechanical power by the
measured electric power.

Prevent asset failure caused by four common machine faults

• Failure of water pumps in municipal and industrial facilities often means

emergency repairs with downtime of whole systems and production stoppages.
• Beneficial to assess the condition of machines without the need to tear them
down.
• Vibration testing is one of the most effective.
• It can identify conditional changes caused by the four most common machine
faults to make repair decisions before emergencies:
 Misalignment: This may be caused by improper shaft installation, baseplate issues,
improper coupling, seal or bearing wear.
 Imbalance: Can result from eroded impeller blades, improper bearing etc.
 Looseness: Improper installation of the equipment, manufacture defects, baseplate
issues etc.
 Bearing wear: This may be caused by shaft voltage discharges from VFD,
misalignment, improper lubrication, improper installation.
