4 Other components and their main functions

In addition, there are also other main components that are listed hereunder:

• KM01: This contactor controls the excitation ON and OFF on this system. KM01 is a 4x30A
contactor, with a 24Vdc coil. Three poles are used to control the power of the voltage regulator
DECS 200 (contacts 1 to 6). The fourth pole (contact 7-8), is used to bypass the discharge resistor
R01. If this contactor is energized (please see the section 4 for further information), the voltage
regulator will be powered, the discharge resistor R01 is bypassed and the boost circuit is enabled.

• R01: This resistor is used for the fast de-excitation of the system. When the excitation is ON, this
resistor is not included in the field circuit (no effect). When the AVR is off, R01 is inserted in the DC
output circuit of AVR DECS 200: the excitation is totally disconnected and the excitation current of
the exciter is dissipated in the discharge resistor via the free wheel diode, which is inside the DECS
200. This will cause a faster de-excitation.

• QF01: This circuit-breaker (D-Curve) is used to protect the system against over current. The output
contact, which gives the status of this MCB via KA01, is connected to terminals X1/53 to X1/55).
There is also one emission trigger connected on this MCB (see below for the explanations).

• QF01: This emission trigger (labeled QF01) is connected on the circuit-breaker QF01 (on the side).
When there is an over voltage detected by the relay OVR (VAASA), the above mentioned circuit-
breaker QF01 will open -> the excitation is OFF. If QF01 opens during operation (either by an over
voltage or by an over current), the Generator Circuit Breaker has to open thus preventing the
generator from pole slipping (under reactance).

• OVR: This over voltage relay is connected to the sensing circuit (same circuit as for the A.V.R. DECS
200). This VAASA ac relay (over voltage condition – 59 function) will be energized when the
voltage goes above the externally adjustable trip point. There is also a time delay control with an
adjustment from 50ms to 2 seconds. The output contacts for the 59 function are connected to the
trip coil of QF01

• Function 27: This under voltage relay (included into the DECS 200) is connected to the sensing
circuit. This DECS200 output programmable ac relay (under voltage condition – 27 function) will be
de-energized when the voltage goes below the externally adjustable trip point. There is also a time
delay control with an adjustment from 500ms to 10 seconds. The output contacts for the 27
function are connected to the boost contactor KM02.

• VC01 / VC02: The VC02 three-phase rectifier bridge is used to convert the AC current into a DC
current, in order to be used on the exciter field (DC current and voltage). The VC01 three-phase
rectifier bridge is used as an OR gate between DECS power circuit, Boost circuit and Field-Flashing
circuit.

• KM02: This contactor controls the short circuit for CT’s used into the Boost circuit. KM02 is rated
at 4x30A, with a 24Vdc coil. It is controlled by the DECS-200.

• KA02 / KA03: Those relays control the regulation mode of the voltage regulator DECS-200. KA02 is
monitored by the generator circuit-breaker. When this contact is closed, KA02 will be energized.
KA03 is monitored by the line circuit-breaker. When this contact is closed, KA03 will be energized.

• KT01: This timer relay controls the field-flashing circuit which is used to build-up the excitation.
The adjustable resistor R02 is used to adapt the 24Vdc field-flashing power supply to the
excitation field.

• G01: This device is an inrush current reduction module (ICRM). It avoids all undesired trip of the
circuit breaker when the excitation contactor is closed. When the excitation is engaged, there will
be an inrush current, with an over current that may cause a circuit breaker trip.

5 Description of the system

5.1 How to start the system

When the first start-up is made, the generator protection relays must be already connected and
tested with the secondary injection test. If there is a problem in the excitation circuit, these relays will
protect the generator and the AVR from faults. At first, some details have to be checked. You will find
hereunder some details:

Check if the external control voltage is applied on terminals X1/18 to 21 (85 to 264Vdc (45-
65hz) or 90 to 350Vdc and another 24Vdc). The DECS 200 will be energized.
Check all the connections (please refer to the electrical drawings 6-1103-91-370 sent with the
equipment).
The excitation of the generator has to be OFF, either by opening the circuit-breaker QF01 or by
closing the external contact (momentary) connected on terminal X1/33. The excitation ON
push button, connected on terminal X1/34 must not be activated. For safety reason, when the
excitation circuit-breaker is open (QF01), there is no possibility to start the system (excitation
ON). When the circuit-breaker (QF01) is closed, the operator can excite the generator
(excitation ON).
Start the engine and make sure the speed control is working properly.
Measure the voltage from the voltage sensing circuit, on terminals X1/9-10-11, as well as the
field-flashing power supply circuit on terminal X1/4-5. The voltage should be 24Vdc. If this is
not the case, the DG must be shut down and all the sensing and power circuits must be
checked.
Close the excitation circuit-breaker (QF01) and close the external contact (Excitation ON)
connected on terminal X1/34. The voltage will start to build-up. If the voltage does not
stabilize at nominal level or if it overshoots excessively, the protection relays should shut the
excitation down. If this does not happen within seconds, use the excitation circuit-breaker
(QF01) to shut down the excitation.

5.2 Other functions

If the operator wants to:

Change the setpoint of the voltage regulator DECS 200 (A01):

The contacts on terminal X1/31 (raise regulator setpoint), or on X1/32 (lower
regulation setpoint) has to be closed.
An analog input signal can be applied on terminals X1 36-67. Please note that this
setpoint can be adjusted either with a +/-10Vdc or a 4-20mA signal (be careful: only
one of those two types of signals has to be used at the same time). More, the +/- 10Vdc
can be connected to some other protective devices, like the PSS-100 (Power System
Stabilizer). If this is the case, there is no possibility to change the setpoints of the AVR’s
via another external +/-10 Vdc control voltage or 4-20mA circuit. By default, this
mounting plate is connected in order to work with a 4-20mA signal.

Transfer from the automatic to the manual channel (FCR mode) or vice versa, the contact on
terminals X1/29 (transfer to the FCR mode – Field Current Regulation or Manual mode), or on
X1/30 (transfer to the automatic channel) has to be closed. In this mode, the generator field
excitation current will be maintained constant at the set-point in the DECS-200. Please note
that the voltage regulator DECS 200 has an internal auto-tracking between all modes. The non
active modes are tracking the active mode.

Change the regulation mode (voltage, droop, power factor or VAR control), the status of the
contacts connected between terminals X1/22-23 and X1/24-25 have to be changed. As
explained before, there are different modes of regulation. 4 of them (voltage, droop, power
factor or var control) can act on the above mentioned contacts. This changeover between all
modes can be automatically chosen by connecting the auxiliary contact from the Utility Circuit-
Breaker (DJU).

If DJU is open, the A.V.R. DECS 200 will work in droop mode (droop mode active while
the On-Line over excitation limiter is enabled and will limit if the settings are exceeded.
There is No VAR/PF regulation). If, for any reason, the auxiliary relays KA02 and KA03
are out of order: the system will work in droop mode, which is the safest method in all
operations.
If DJU is open, the generator can work in voltage mode in the case if the droop is set at
zero (AV.R. mode active while the Off-Line over excitation limiter is enabled and will
limit if the settings are exceeded. There is No Droop and No VAR/PF regulation). This
mode could be active when the external contact connected on terminal X1/28 is
closed. But for safety reason, as explained above, it is much better to keep this contact
open.
If DJU is closed, the A.V.R. DECS 200 will work either in VAR or Power Factor mode
(VAR/PF mode active while the On-Line over excitation limiter is enabled and will limit
if the settings are exceeded).

Start the excitation of the generator, the contact connected to terminal X1/34 has to be
closed. There is an external contact (wired on terminals X1/51-52), which indicates the status
of the excitation control (the contact is closed when the excitation is ON and is open when the
excitation is OFF). If the excitation circuit-breaker (QF01) is open, there is no possibility to
excite the generator (QF01 has to be closed).

De-excite the generator, the contact connected to terminal X1/33 has to be closed. Please
note that if there is an over current detected by the excitation circuit-breaker (QF01), the
system will stop automatically. If QF01 opens, the Generator Circuit-Breaker (DJA) has to open
immediately.

Activate the preposition of the AVR: by closing the contact on terminal X1/27, all the setpoints
will be changed to the predefined value. Typically, this input is connected to one auxiliary
contact on the generator circuit-breaker. When the generator circuit-breaker opens, all
setpoints are forced to the pre-position settings. This is especially helpful if FCR mode is active
and the generator is under a load. Using an auxiliary contact from DJA will force the FCR
setpoint to its preposition setting, which could be preset to the generators nominal voltage.

Reset the alarm indications annunciated on the A.V.R. DECS 200 screen, the contact connected
to terminal X1/26 has to be closed. By using the pushbuttons (left-arrow or right-arrow) on the
front panel of the DECS 200, some annunciations will appear. The following messages may
appear as annunciations on the alarm message screen :

 Field Overvoltage (maintained until Reset)

 Field Overcurrent (maintained until Reset)
 Generator Undervoltage (maintained until Reset)
 Generator Overvoltage (maintained until Reset)
Lost voltage sensing (maintained until Reset)
System below 10Hz (maintained until Reset)
Underfrequency (clears 2 seconds after end of event)
Overexcitation limit (clears 2 seconds after end of event)
Underexcitation limit (clears 2 seconds after end of event)

Once the list of annunciation messages has been viewed, it may be cleared by pressing the Reset
pushbutton (or by closing the external contact on terminal X1/26).

Use the Modbus communication employed by the DECS-200, connections on terminals X1/39-
40 have to be made. The Modbus communication uses a master-slave technique in which only
the master can initiate a transaction. This translation is called a query. When appropriate, a
slave (DECS 200) responds to the query. When a Modbus master communicates with a slave,
information is provided or requested by the master. Information residing in the DECS 200 is
grouped characteristically in categories. Those categories are mentioned inside the DECS 200
instruction manual (at the section Modbus Communication).

5.3 Voltage sensing circuit

The sensing voltage is supplied to the A.V.R. DECS 200 through the terminals X1/9 to 10. The phase
order is very important in this circuit and if the connections are incorrect, the A.V.R. DECS 200 will sense a
wrong phase rotation. If the generator direction of rotation is in reverse, phases A and C must be flipped
in the sensing circuit to obtain the correct phase rotation (please refer to the main electrical drawing 6-
1103-91-370).
As explained before, there is an over voltage relay connected on the same circuit (OVR, relay
VAASA). This relay senses the generator voltage. If the voltage goes above the settings after a
predetermined period of time (from 0 to 10 seconds), the relay will close its contact the excitation will
shut down the generator circuit-breaker has to open immediately.

5.4 Short-circuit support

The booster circuit is not needed during normal operation. It is only needed during a network short-
circuit situation, when the line collapses and the normal A.V.R. DECS 200 power circuit cannot supply
sufficient excitation. Booster power is supplied by the current transformers that give all the necessary
current on the exciter field, through the terminals X1/1 to 3.
When the excitation contactor KM01 is not energized (excitation OFF), the current transformers are
short-circuited. If KM01 is energized (excitation ON), the auxiliary contacts from KM01 (contacts 21-22
and 31-32) are open, which will allow to the boost circuit to operate properly. Even if the contactor KM01
is active, the boost circuit will be activated only if the contactor KM02 is de-energized. KM02 is controlled
by the DECS200

5.5 Parallel operation and cross current compensation circuit

Generator sets are operated in parallel to improve fuel economy and reliability of the power supply.
Economy is improved with multiple paralleled generators by selecting only sufficient generators to carry
the load demand at any given time. By operating each generator near its full capacity, fuel is utilized
efficiently.
In order to be able to run in parallel with other units (generators), the voltage regulator DECS 200
needs to sense the reactive load of the generator. The A.V.R. DECS 200 calculates this information by
using the current transformer and the voltage sensing circuit (connected to terminals X1/16 to X1/17).
The current transformer is connected to terminals X1/16-17. Please refer to the electrical drawing for the
proper connections.
If the current transformer is not correctly wired, the voltage regulator DECS 200 will sense reactive
power flowing in the reverse direction: it will sense negative reactive power when in reality the reactive
power flow is in positive direction. An attempt to parallel two generators when one has correct polarity
and the other has reverse polarity results in a situation where the correctly connected generator will go
to a very low excitation and will probably trip due to under reactance, the other will pick-up a heavy
reactive over current in the lagging power factor.

5.5.1 Voltage droop control

When reactive droop compensation is used to parallel two or more generators, each parallel
droop circuit is independent from the other. A typical parallel droop circuit is made of a current
transformer and a paralleling circuit (already inside the DECS 200).
Voltage droop control mode can be used either in single unit operation, in parallel operation with
other units in an island system, or in parallel operation with the utility. If, for any reason, the relay KA03
becomes out of order, the system will work into the droop mode, which is the safest method in all
operations.
The principle is the same as the AVR mode but adds a "droop" function to the regulation loop in
order to reduce the regulated voltage by a programmable percentage based on the reactive current
demanded by the generator's load. This helps in reactive load sharing between parallel connected
generators. If this mode is not desired, the droop percentage set-point in the DECS-200 can be set to zero
percent (0%).

5.5.2 Cross current compensation

By using only the current transformer (connected on the phase (A, B or C phase) on the primary
side and to terminals X1/16-17 for the secondary side), some values available via the voltage regulator
will not be correct (current, power factor, active and reactive powers). However, voltage, frequency and
field amperes displays will remain intact. In order to read correct values, another current input has been
added on the DECS 200 voltage regulator: another current transformer (exactly the same as for the
current transformer) will be connected either on the a-phase or on the c-phase. This feature is very
useful. The current transformer has to be connected on terminals X1/14-15.

The cross current mode (called sometimes reactive differential compensation) can be used in an
island system when there are several generators running in parallel and they all have DECS 200 type AVR
(also single unit operation in island is applicable).

Interconnection of the current transformers can be seen. On generator one, the current
transformer (GEN 1) terminal with the polarity mark is connected to the current transformer (GEN 2) on
generator number two at the terminal with no polarity mark. On generator number two, the current
transformer (GEN 2) terminal with polarity mark is connected to the current transformer (GEN 1) on
generator number one at the terminal with no mark. For the reactive differential compensation (cross
current compensation) to perform properly, all of the paralleling current transformers on all of the
generators delivering power to the bus must be connected into the cross current loop.
The current transformer connected in the loop must have the same ratios so that each current
transformer supplies the same amount of current to properly cancel the voltage across the burden
resistor (rated at 1 ohm / 50 or 100 watts). In the case where different size generators are paralleled,
current transformer ratios must be changed to give approximately the same secondary current as the
other current transformer(s). Otherwise, cancellation of the currents in the cross current loop will not
occur, and the imbalance of current will force the generators to have circulating currents between them.
If several generators are connected in parallel, the following system can be used (see drawing on the
previous page).

5.5.3 VAR/PF Regulation Mode
This mode works to maintain constant either
the reactive power or the ratio of the reactive
power to the active power exported by the
generator, compared to the regulation set-
point in the DECS-200. This mode is activated
when both generator (DJA) and utility (DJU)
breakers are closed.

Changing between VAR and Power Factor Regulation:

The DECS-200 can regulate a constant VAR production or a constant Power Factor. This selection is
made either directly on the front panel of the DECS-200 (on page 2-15 on the DECS 200 instruction
manual) or via the computer with the Basler software Bestcoms (see picture on the right).

5.6 Voltage matching circuit

The KA02 contact 11-12 is used as a safety feature to control voltage matching. DECS AVR has
automatic voltage matching feature for synchronizing built-in. If the DECS 200 sees a different voltage at
sensing terminals E1-E2-E3 (terminals X1/9-10-11) than in bus bars terminals B1-B3 (terminals X1/12-13)
it will try to match both voltages. However the AVR is designed so that it will not try to match zero voltage
and it requires the bus voltage to be within certain adjustable area before it starts matching. The normal
area is ±10% of rated voltage. When the generator breaker is closed, KA02 is energized, KA02 contact 11-
12 is open and the voltage matching is disabled. Output contacts

The communication port link allows the user to set additional alarm or shutdown parameters. It also
provides access and allows storing or saving all the DECS 200 functional parameters.

The DECS 200 is supplied with standard program described in the Instruction Manual.

The first operation is the configuration of DECS 200. It is mandatory to enter the right values in
DECS before any operation of the generator. Configuration of DECS 200 can be made on the mounting
plate as following:

Apply the 24Vdc voltage between terminals X1/20-21 and 85 to 264Vdc (45-65hz) or 90 to
350Vdc between terminals X1/18-19.
Select the proper operating parameters of DECS as per Instruction Manual of DECS. Do not
forget to save them in the DECS and to record them on the commissioning report.
Proceed with normal starting procedure of generator/AVR.

FOR
INRUSH CURRENT
REDUCTION MODULE
ICRM-7, ICRM-15

INTRODUCTION
The Inrush Current Reduction Module (ICRM) prevents damage to a protected voltage regulator during power-up
by limiting inrush current to a safe level. Without inrush protection, the inrush current is limited only by the level of
the power source impedance. The lower the impedance, the greater the risk of damaging the regulator from
excessive inrush current. Devices with a pulse-width modulated (PWM) power stage are especially vulnerable to
high inrush current due to a large amount of capacitance inherent to the design. However, voltage regulators that
use SCR-type power stages do not require the protection of an ICRM since these regulators do not have a large
amount of capacitance in the power stage.
When a voltage regulator with a PWM power stage is energized, the ICRM limits the inrush current by adding a
high level of resistance in series with the voltage regulator power input. Once the inrush current subsides, the
series resistance diminishes quickly to allow nominal, steady-state current flow.

APPLICATION
Applications where a voltage regulator is powered by a permanent magnet generator (PMG), auxiliary winding, or
generator output (shunt fed) usually do not require the protection of an ICRM. These sources usually have a
higher source impedance which inherently minimizes inrush current. Also, these sources are typically connected
directly to the voltage regulator with no interposing relays, contactors, or switches. If this is the case, then no
inrush occurs since the source voltage ramps up to its rated value.
However, if rated or near rated voltage is applied to the voltage regulator, then some amount of inrush current is
expected and an ICRM should be considered. Typically, voltage regulators in these applications receive power
from a station service bus that is switched by a relay or contactor. Applications where a PWM type voltage
regulator is powered by a low-impedance source need an ICRM to minimize the amount of inrush current.
To summarize, if the voltage that powers the voltage regulator ramps up to nominal as the generator comes up to
rated speed, then an ICRM is not needed. If this is not the case, an ICRM should be used. If you are unsure
whether your application requires an ICRM, contact Basler Electric Technical Sales Support for assistance.

ICRM Versions
Two versions of the ICRM are available. Each version is uniquely suited to protect a specific family of Basler
Electric products. Table 1 lists each ICRM model, its part number, and the compatible products.

Table 1. ICRM Cross-Reference

Model Number Part Number Compatible Products
ICRM-7 9387900103 DECS-100
ICRM-15 9387900104 AVC63-12, AVC125-10, DECS-200

CAUTION
If operating power is removed from an energized ICRM, a minimum interval of
five minutes should elapse before operating power is restored. This cool-down
interval allows the ICRM to regain its ability to limit inrush current.

Wiring requirements are subject to the specifications of the voltage regulator. Refer to the appropriate device
instruction manual for wire sizing, fuse recommendations, and terminal designations.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The ICRM contains no serviceable components. Replacement of the ICRM is recommended in the event of a
failure.
If the protected device is not receiving operating power, check the following:
• Verify that the ICRM connections between the power source and voltage regulator are correct.
• Confirm that the voltage supplied by the power source is sufficient to energize the voltage regulator.
If operating power is applied to the input terminals of the ICRM but voltage is not present at the output terminals,
remove operating power, disconnect all ICRM wiring, and perform the following procedure.
1. Connect a suitable ohmmeter across the A-IN and A-OUT terminals. The resistance measured across the IN
and OUT terminals should be approximately 2.0 ohms for the ICRM-7 and 0.5 ohms for the ICRM-15. If an
open circuit or short circuit is detected, the ICRM should be replaced.
2. Repeat Step 1 for the B-IN and B-OUT pair of terminals and the C-IN and C-OUT pair of terminals.

Product description

QUINT POWER power supply units – Maximum system availability with SFB technology

Compact power supply units of the new QUINT POWER generation maximize the availability of your system. With the
SFB technology (Selective Fuse Breaking Technology), six times the nominal current for 12 ms, even the standard power
circuit-breakers can now also be triggered reliably and quickly. Faulty current paths are switched off selectively, the fault
is located and important system parts continue to operate. Comprehensive diagnostics are provided through constant
monitoring of output voltage and current. This preventive function monitoring visualizes critical operating modes and
reports them to the control unit before an error can occur.
