our opinions, recommendations and conclusions are made in accordance with generally
accepted principles and practices of these professions.
The extent of investigation as well as specific exploration locations were decided by the
clients / consultants. The findings and recommendations are further based on the assumption
that the subsurface conditions do not deviate appreciably from those reported and those
assumed.
The contents of this report are using the current accepted principles and practices of
geotechnical engineering and it is valid as of the date of preparation. However, changes in the
condition of the site, properties of subsoil, can occur over time as a result or either natural
processes or human activity. In addition, advancements in the practice of geotechnical
engineering, engineering and changes in applicable practice codes may affect the validity of
this report.
This report has been prepared solely for use by, and is confidential to, the clients and as per
the scope and specification instructed by them verbally or in writing and No other use is
anticipated or authorized by clients. The report shall be used only by the client for the project
and purposes described herein at the locations shown by him and explored by us. We accept
no responsibility for its use by other persons. The finding and recommendations are valid
when the onsite and offsite conditions affecting the structures in project are not changed due
to the actions of man or nature.
Our investigation Report does not include the evaluation or assessment of any potential
environmental hazards or groundwater contamination that may be present. Soil being natural
heterogeneous material, any deviation observed during execution shall be reported to us for
further investigation.

REPORT ON SUB SOIL EXPLORATION
1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The investigation of the site is an essential prerequisite to the construction of all civil
engineering works with a view to assess the general suitability of the site for the proposed new
works and to enable in preparing an adequate and economic design.
In particular, it is necessary to assess the changes that may occur during or after the
construction of structure due to the choice of materials or methods of construction, which may
adversely affect safety of structure or after its performance or utility.
It is usually judicious to collect information relating to the site prior to commencing its
exploration. The exploration of the site for an important structure requires the exploration and
sampling of all strata likely to be significantly affected by the structural load. The extent of this
exploration will depend on the site and structure.
All structures rest on the foundation soil and their performance depends on soil behavior. Soil
forms the most widely used material of construction of earth dams, roads and canals. To study
the behavior of soil in foundation or earthwork engineering, properties of soil under the actual
field conditions have to be obtained.
Soil mechanics is the application of the laws of mechanics and hydraulics to engineering
problems dealing with sediments and other unconsolidated accumulation of solid particles
produced by the mechanical and chemical disintegration of rocks, regardless of whether or not
they contain an admixture of organic constituent.
Soil exploration provides the detailed sub soil conditions such as Stratification, Hardness &
Denseness of the strata, Water table level, Compressibility, Soil stability, Stress analysis,
Shearing resistance & Failure analysis.
This complete report is very much useful for …
Calculation of Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) of the soil,
The Estimation & provision of the ground water table level in design of foundation and
if needed to decide upon the method to solve the ground water problem,
The Economical optimization of foundation design,
The Foundation settlement analysis & to provide provision for the same in design,
To check the probability of Liquefaction of the soil,
Bhumi Research Center, Surat was entrusted by client, for carrying out subsoil investigation
of proposed site for detailed sub soil exploration. Based on the data supplied and
It has application in finding out the degree of saturation and unit weight of moist soil. The
Specific Gravity is important parameter for finding out various engineering parameters
like void ratio, degree of saturation, shears failure, etc. and is also needed in pressure,
settlement and stability problems in soil engineering. In order to determine Specific
gravity of soil, undisturbed samples were selected. The Specific gravity range varies from
2.60 to 2.67.
5.2.4 Shear parameters:
The controlled strain method was used in case of shear test. These parameters are used in
evaluation of stability analysis and in evaluation of ultimate bearing capacity. The
cylindrical specimen for triaxial compression (without the measurement of pore water
pressure) was prepared from undisturbed sample. Shear as well as Triaxial Compression
Test (Unconsolidated Undrained) was conducted.
The main purpose of consolidation tests is to obtain soil data, which are used in predicting
the rate and the amount of settlement of the structure. Compression index Cc indicates the
magnitude of compression and the over consolidation pressure Pc indicates the
compaction of strata at natural condition. This test gives the values of various parameters
as under @ the foundation depth. This test is performed at 5.50m depth from EGL.
sc = 1.174 1.174
sq = 1.174 1.174
sy = 0.651 0.651
2
Elastic immediate settlements (Si), = p B (1-µ ) I /E
Load intensity at bottom of load bearing strtaum p=qfill (kPa) (DL+LL) = 308 277
Effective width, B (m) = 7.50 7.5
Thickness of soil layer from OGL where SPT N is more than 50 (m) = 15.00 15
Thickness of soil which under go settlement (N>50) Ht (m) = 12.00 11.5
Effective thickness of soil layer undergo settlement, Hsetl (min. of 1.5B or Ht) = 11.25 11.25
Poissons ratio of soil, µ = 0.5 0.5
Influence factor (I ) fig-11 of IS:8009 (for four corner) = 0.96 0.84
Elastic modulus, E (kPa) for PI<30 and stiff soil, E=(500 to 1500)*C, take it = 50767 67689
750*C ----Bowels
By Considering above values in below equation we get immediate settlement.
2
So, Immediate Settlement (Si) = p B (1-µ ) I/E
Immediate settlement (Si) (mm) = 33 19.33586
Depth correction factor (IS 8009-Part 1 - Fig 12) = 0.88 0
Rigidity factor (IS 8009-Part 1 - Cl 9.5.2) = 0.8 0.8
Immediate Settlement after above corrections (Si) (DL+LL) (mm) = 23.1 0
Since the soils are clay, So, the consolidated settlements (i.e Long term Settlement), Sf,
Sf = ∆p mv H
Top Filled up soil layer above OGL i.e. below EGL (m) = 0 0
So foundation depth from Existing Ground Level (EGL) (m), (i.e. =3+0) = 3.00
So, Foundation RL (m) = 25.30 3
