CH 219 TUTORIAL 1

Q1. Consider the main Group elements of the Periodic Table and explain the trend of
each of the following across a Period from left to right:
(i) Atomic radius.
(ii) Ionization energy.

Q2. Define the following:

(i) Hydrogen bond.
(ii) Electronegativity.
(iii) Electron affinity.

Q3. Explain why the first ionization energy of Mg is higher than that of Al contrary to
what is expected.

Q4. Although the K+ cation and the Cl- anion are isoelectronic, the K+ is smaller in size
compared to the Cl- ion.

Q5. The addition of an electron to chlorine is an exothermic process whereas addition of

an electron to Ar is an endothermic process. Give reasons.
Q6. Name the Group in the Periodic Table that has:
(i) highest electronegativities.
(ii) lowest ionization potentials
(iii) highest ionization energies
(iv) highest electron affinities.

Q7. Outline the principal factors which explain why hydrogen does not fit to be placed
above fluorine in the Periodic Table.
Q8. Outline the principal factors which explain why hydrogen does not fit to be placed
above lithium in the Periodic Table.

Q9 Briefly describe two industrial uses of hydrogen giving balanced chemical

equation(s) wherever possible.
Q10. Give the formula two examples of nonstoichiometric compounds of hydrogen.
Q11. Explain why the second ionization energy of rubidium (2633 kJ/mol) is much
higher than its first ionization energy (403 kJ/mol).
