Bamboo Ensemble
5
Target
The abundance of bamboo paved the way for the many varieties of instruments-
idiophone, aerophone and chordophone. Mindanao has also instruments made of
bamboo not only of gongs and it is very exciting to learn about them.
According to Philippine legends, the first man and woman are born out of
bamboo. Bamboo is also considered among early Filipinos as a spiritual connection
from our physical world to the spiritual. Many bamboo instruments were made for
this purpose while some were also used for entertainment and personal expression.
The different manners in playing bamboo instruments include: blowing
(aerophones), shaking or hitting (idiophones) and plucking (chordophones)
In this lesson, you will learn about the bamboo instrumental music of
Mindanao. Through the lessons, you will discover the socio-cultural influences and
distinct religious beliefs of the people of Mindanao.

than the other, and with an open top. Across top, wooden bars of different lengths
are placed to fit the shape of the box, about 1 cm from each other. It is played by
striking the wooden bars with a wooden hammer. This instruments is popular in
Sulu. It is classified as idiophone.
Serongagandi-a guitar-like made of bamboo, cut before one nod and after
nest. Two cords are slit loose side by side from the outer skin fibers of the bamboo
itself and these are given tension by means of bridges. A hole is cut into the
bamboo just under the 2 cords, to serve as resounding hole.
2
Kubing –it is a bamboo jaw harp of Tiruray. These have become one of the most
popular jaw harps internationally due to their highly responsive sound and ornate
designs. In the hands of a good player the kubing is capable of a vast number of
sounds and timbres. It is traditionally considered an intimate instrument, usually
used as communication between family or a loved one in close quarters. Both
genders can use the instrument, the females more infrequently than males who use
it for short distance courtship.
Sahunay is a bamboo flute, leaving six holes for the fingers and trumpet made of
coconut leaf. It is about 50 cm long and 3 cm in diameter. This is a bamboo flute of
the Tausugs in Sulu. It is classified as aerophone.

Balanghay
The balanghai, also known as balangay or Butuan Boat, is a large wooden
boat used by the pre-colonial Filipinos to traverse the seas for trade or migration. It
was first mentioned in the 16th Century in the Chronicles of Pigafetta, and is known
as the oldest Pre-Hispanic watercraft found in the Philippines.
Archaeologists found parts of the balangay in Butuan City in 1976. These artifacts
are dated from anywhere between 320-1250 CE. They are estimated to measure
fifteen meters (15m) long and three to four meters (3-4 m) wide, propelled by sail of
buri or nipa fiber or padding, and holds 60 to 90 people. It was used for cargo and
raiding purposes, serving as evidence that Butuan played a central role in trade.
The finely built boat, constructed without the use of blueprints was taught
from one generation to another. This technique is still used by boat makers of
Sibutu Island.

Vinta
This boat is
traditionally made by
the Badjaos who live in
the Sulu archipelago.
The sail, called
vinta, consists of
several colors and
geometric shapes,
representing the
colorful culture and
history of the Muslim
people. These boats are
small and not meant to
be used for long ocean
travel. They are used for
livelihood activities
such as fishing and
diving for pearls and
transfortation around
the archipelago.

When a loved one passes from our lives, the most common question we hear (both
from ourselves and from those around us) involves the word "why". In the early
days, it's part of "why did this happen?" And as we settle in to our grief, it becomes
part of "why does it hurt so much?" It's possible the question then changes to the
more philosophical inquiry, "why do we grieve?"
Grief is a natural part of our lives, and affects all aspects of our existence. It can
cause us physical pain; and yet bring us to a deeper understanding of the true
value and meaning of life. Grief can be very hard work; taking significant amounts
of energy, it is a major force for change in our lives. We grieve naturally; which to
us means it is a natural way for us to grow stronger and more resilient. But that
certainly doesn't mean it's a pleasant path to take; no one chooses bereavement–it
chooses us.
Loss of any kind–whether it's the loss of a treasured piece of jewelry; the end of a
marriage or much-needed job–especially the death of a loved one, leaves a hole in
our lives. One that we often don't know how to fill; or even if we want to be made
whole again. In her book, Written on the Body, author Jeanette Winterson
captured this unwillingness when she wrote, "To lose someone you love is to alter
your life forever. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes.
This hole in my heart is in the shape of you and no-one else can fit it. Why would I
want them to?" In short, when we grieve, we hold tightly to our memories; which
helps us to fill the hole, or the 'gap' as Ms. Winterson calls it. But it doesn't put an
end to our distress. And there are two sound reasons for the anguish we know as
grief.
First we grieve simply because we loved. This someone special played an integral
role in our life, and we treasured their presence. It takes courage to love a person
deeply, because there's a small part of us that knows our time here is finite; loss is
an inevitable aspect of all human relationships. And it takes courage to grieve,
when the loss occurs.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but there are healthy ways to deal with the
grieving process.
Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when
something or someone you love is taken away. Often, the pain of loss can feel
overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions,
from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief can
also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think
straight. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the
more intense your grief will be.
Coping with the loss of someone or something you love is one of life’s biggest
challenges. You may associate grieving with the death of a loved one—which is
often the cause of the most intense type of grief—but any loss can cause grief,
including:
1. Divorce or relationship breakup
2. Loss of health
3. Losing a job
4. Loss of financial stability
5. A miscarriage
6. Retirement
1. Death of a pet
2. Loss of a cherished dream
3. A loved one’s serious illness
4. Loss of a friendship
5. Loss of safety after a trauma
6. Selling the family home
20
Even subtle losses in life can trigger a sense of grief. For example, you might grieve
after moving away from home, graduating from college, or changing jobs.
Whatever your loss, it’s personal to you, so don’t feel ashamed about how you feel,
or believe that it’s somehow only appropriate to grieve for certain things. If the
person, animal, relationship, or situation was significant to you, it’s normal to
grieve the loss you’re experiencing. Whatever the cause of your grief, though, there
are healthy ways to cope with the pain that, in time, can ease your sadness and
help you come to terms with your loss, find new meaning, and eventually move on
with your life.
Inevitably, the grieving process takes time. Healing happens gradually; it can’t be
forced or hurried—and there is no “normal” timetable for grieving. Some people
start to feel better in weeks or months. For others, the grieving process is measured
in years. Whatever your grief experience, it’s important to be patient with yourself
and allow the process to naturally unfold.
