What is an Operating System?

Operating system - software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks,
executing applications, and controlling peripherals. The operating system can be considered as
core software component of the computer. It performs many functions and an interface between
your computer hardware using what is referred to as "drivers", and the programs installed in your
computer.

After assembling your computer, you cannot use it immediately. When you boot your computer,
the first thing that executes in your hardware is the one installed in the CMOS (complementary
metal-oxide-semiconductor) which is the BIOS (Basic Input Output System).

Windows Operating System

Microsoft Windows, also called Windows and Windows OS, computer operating system
(OS) developed by Microsoft Corporation to run personal computers (PCs). Featuring the
first graphical user interface (GUI) for IBMcompatible PCs, the Windows OS soon
dominated the PC market. Approximately 90 percent of PCs run some version of Windows.

Type of Installation
Upgrade (In-place upgrade) – This alternative replaces your present variant of Windows with
latest Windows, and keeps your records, settings, and projects set up on your PC.
Custom ("fresh" installation) – This choice replaces your present version of Windows with latest
Windows, yet does not keep your records, settings, and programs. It is occasionally referred to a
bare metal installation for that reason.

Windows 10 Operating System

Windows 10 Dekstop and Start Menu.

Sometimes abbreviated as Win10, Microsoft Windows 10 is the latest version of Microsoft

Windows and was released on July 29, 2015. Windows 10 is an upgrade to Windows 8.1.
New Windows 10 features
Windows 10 shares many of the features first introduced with Windows 8, in addition to the major
features mentioned below.
• Start menu - Brought back the Windows Start menu, with the tiles introduced in
Windows 8 also capable of being displayed in the Start menu.
• Microsoft Edge - Microsoft has kept Internet Explorer, but also introduced and
included the new Microsoft Edge browser for Windows 10 users, and recommends
using it as the default browser.
• Cortana - The new voice assistant Cortana is now part of Windows and the
Windows search bar.
• Action Center - A pop-out window with notifications for Windows and software on
the computer and quick access to several features, like Bluetooth, or tablet mode
and battery saver options if using a laptop. Action Center replaces the Charms
feature available in Windows 8.
TIP:
As of May 2020, the latest version of Windows 10 is version 1909, released on
November 12, 2019, and available as a free upgrade through Windows Update.

One of the largest updates to Windows 10 was the Fall Creators Update, released on
October 17, 2017.
What Windows version came before Windows 10?
For the end user, Windows 8 came before Windows 10.

Note:
Microsoft skipped from Windows 8 (Windows 8.1) to Windows 10, and there was
never a version of Microsoft Windows called "Windows 9."
What version of Windows comes after Windows 10?
Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 is the last "version" of Windows. In a 2015 blog post,
Terry Myerson of Microsoft explained that Windows is transitioning to a service model. Rather
than moving towards "Windows 11," Microsoft is focusing on updating Windows 10 on the
second Tuesday of every month, with major updates planned for release around April and
October of each year. For instance, in 2017, Microsoft released the Creators Update in April,
and the Fall Creators Update in October.

2 TYPES OF PERIPHERAL DEVICES

 Internal: You install these inside your computer's case and are likely to consider them part
of the computer. Internal devices can come in the form of an expansion card, or a new hard
disk drive or DVD drive.
 External: You attach these to your computer by connecting them to ports on the outside of
your computer's case. Some external devices are essential to our computing experiences,
such as a monitor, keyboard, and mouse; others are considered essential by some users
but optional by others, such as speakers and a printer; and still others are more specialty
items, such as a scanner or external hard drive.

Directions / Instructions

A. Installing the Keyboard

1. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions

2. Determine if the keyboard uses a PS/2 or USB connector.
The PS/2 connector for keyboards is round and typically
colored purple, while the USB is flat and rectangular in
shape
PS/S CONNECTOR USB CONNECTOR

3. Install the keyboard by plugging it into the chosen port.

Installing a (non-wireless) keyboard is very straight forward and easy to do, but first you need to
determine if the keyboard uses a PS/2 or USB connector

B. Installing the mouse Installing a mouse is very similar to installing a

keyboard. You will still find mice with either USB or PS/2 connectivity,
although most of the newer mice will use a USB connection, especially if
you are using a mouse for gaming. Just like the keyboard, you can also
use an adapter to change a USB connection to PS/2.

C. Installing the monitor

Installing a monitor (also known as a “display”)

requires a free power outlet for A/C power and
identifying the connection type you will use to
connect the monitor to your graphics card.

D. Installing the speakers

Installing the speakers can vary greatly

VGA Cable Connection
depending on what type of speakers you are
using. If you have a simple set of 2.0 or 2.1 speakers all you
need do is connect the audio cable to the “line-out” jack of your
computer’s sound card, and connect the other end(s) to the
speaker unless they are already “hard-wired” and plug in the
power cord.

Audio Connection / Ports

E. Installing a webcam
Most webcams are USB powered and simply require that you plug them in and
install their drivers. However, some cams require that the drivers be installed
first, so be sure to read the instructions that came with your webcam to avoid
any problems.

ACTIVITY 7

A. Identification. Label the following peripheral devices and describe how it is being connected to
the system unit.

ACTIVITY 8.

Direction: List down at least 5 peripheral devices according to its type.

Activity Title : Conduct testing and documentation / Identify & test device
Learning Target : identify device and computer specification
References : CSS CG G9-10
Prepared by : Lawrence C. Aduca

PC hardware, such as a desktop computer, is the most common type of IT hardware purchased by
a small business. The cost of hardware depends on its specification, which in turn is determined
by some key components.

CPU/ PROCESSOR- a processor, is located inside the computer case on the

motherboard. It is sometimes called the brain of the computer, and its job is
to carry out commands.
A processor's speed is measured in megahertz (MHz), or millions of
instructions per second; and gigahertz (GHz), or billions of instructions
per second.

Random Access Memory (RAM)- It is your system's

short-term memory. Whenever your computer performs
calculations, it temporarily stores the data in the RAM
until it is needed.
The HARD DRIVE is long-term storage, which means the data is still saved
even if you turn the computer off or unplug it.

The video card is responsible for what you see on the monitor. Most
computers have a GPU (graphics processing unit) built into the
motherboard instead of having a separate video card.
Micro SD Memory cards:
Micro SD cards were initially a popular method of storing images in mobile
phones. In actual size they are the smallest commercially available memory
card at 15×11×1mm but can store up to 2GB of information.

SD (Secure Digital) Memory Cards:

SD cards are by far the most common type of memory card. They are
compatible with the majority of digital cameras.

SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) Memory Cards:

hese are SD memory cards but with a higher capacity. Original SD cards only went up to 2GB, so
SDHC was invented with a maximum capacity of 32GB.

ACTIVITY 9
Directions: Match column A with column B by identifying the correct functions of the
component name in column A. Write only the letter on the space
provided.

Column A Column B

a) It is where your software, documents, and

________ 1. RAM other files are stored. It is a long-term

Network Problems

When you suddenly cannot connect to the Internet, any of several things could be wrong. Use
this checklist to find and solve common Internet connection problem

1. Unplugged Network Cable- Unplugged or loose network cables are one of the most common
reasons why you might suddenly find yourself unable to connect to the Internet.
Action: Ensure your wired or wireless network hardware is switched on and plugged in.
2. Website Temporarily Offline- What may seem to be a network problem connecting to the
Internet is sometimes simply a Web site (or whatever server is on the other end of the
connection) being temporarily offline.
Action: Before assuming your Internet connection is faulty, try visiting several popular Web
sites rather than just one.
3. IP Address Conflicts- If your computer and another on the network both have the same IP
address, the conflict between them will prevent either from working properly online.
Action: To resolve an IP conflict, follow these instructions to release and renew your IP
address. If your network uses static IP addresses, manually change your IP to a different
number.
4. Computer Firewall Malfunctions -. When two software firewalls, such as Windows Firewall
plus a third-party product, are installed on the same computer, contention between the two
can also incorrectly block traffic.
Action: If you have recently installed or upgraded software firewalls on your computer,
temporarily disable them to determine whether it may be the cause of Internet connection
problems.

5. Outside Wireless Signal Range- The performance of Wi-Fi network connections depends on
distance between the device and the wireless access point. The farther away a Wi-Fi device is, the
slower the local connection generally runs, until it breaks altogether.

Action: Use one of the options written below to measure the strength of your wireless signal and
try these ideas to expand the range of your Wi-Fi.

5. Wireless Network Configuration - Wi-Fi networks with encryption options like WPA or WEP
turned on require computers to use matching security keys when connecting. If someone
changes the encryption keys or password on the access point, devices that worked before will
suddenly be unable to establish sessions and Internet connections.
Action: Confirm that the Wi-Fi channel number and encryption keys on your router have not
recently changed (check with the network administrator if necessary). When using a hotspot,
follow the provider's instructors for signing in carefully.

ACTIVITY 10

MATCHING TYPE Directions: Match the network problems in column A with the solutions /
troubleshooting procedures in column B. Write the letter on the space provided.

A B

______ 1. Computer Firewall Malfunctions A. Ensure your wired or wireless network

hardware is switched on and plugged in.

______ 2. Wireless Network Configuration B. Before assuming your internet

connection is faulty, try visiting several
popular Web sites rather than just one.

______ 3. Unplugged network cable C. If you have recently installed or upgraded

software firewalls on your computer,
temporarily disable them to determine
whether it may be the cause of Internet
connection problems.

______ 4. Outside Wireless Signal Range D. Place the router at a height in some
central location and away from other
cordless devices. Make sure that the router
is not placed near something metallic and
avoid mirrors.

______ 5. website temporary offline E. Confirm that the Wi-Fi channel number
and encryption keys on your router have not
recently changed.
