Dear Mrs. Benham

I hope you are doing well. My name is Chloe Monk. I am currently enrolled in HACC’s
Early Childhood Education program. I am writing in regards to the issue of unequal education
that children who are of color, have a disability, and come from a low economic status are
facing.
Children who are different are not getting the same treatment as everyone and that is
reflecting on their education. In 2018, the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported,
“that black K-12 students are 3.2 times more likely than white students to be suspended or
expelled from school.” When children of color are treated differently or worse from others,
they do not feel loved nor supported. Teachers need to treat students equally. They deserve
the same education as everyone else. Poverty in America has affected many children and their
education. In the article, 11 FACTS ABOUT EDUCATION AND POVERTY IN AMERICA, they stated
that; “40% of children living in poverty aren’t prepared for primary schooling”. Poverty has a
huge effect on a child’s education and what they can accomplish. There still needs to be ways to
help children in these situations succeed in their education.
There are many organizations today, that are advocating for good education for all
children. The Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) is composed of
educators and others who advocate for education reform. They want to promote and support
the global community for education, development, and the well-being of children. They hold
Global Summit on Childhood, bringing in professionals to discuss the state of childhood and
how they can better education and the health/well-being. Another organization to look at is the
Learning Disabilities Association of America. This organization advocated for children or
individuals with learning disabilities. This group wants to ensure that children are receiving
equal opportunities inn education. They help parents find resources related to their child’s
disability. The LDAA hosts annual conferences, where people who are working with children
with learning disabilities are able to discuss issues and how to better help those children.
I would like for you to hold a part in advocating for these children. These children need a
voice, so they can receive the same amount of education as everyone else. If you would like, I
would propose that you would work with us to create a statement, that states “Children living
in poverty, of a different race/color, or having a disability, can receive as much educational help
as those who do not live in these type of situations”. We could bring this before the state and
see what feedback they give us. I believe that you would be a big help in continuing our
advocacy in the issue of education. My committee and I will continue to advocate and support
our students. We currently have an after-school program, where we help children who struggle
in class, need a place to be until their parents get home, and where children with disabilities
can meet with their aids. I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully working together to
continue to advocate for children and the world of education. If you have any questions or
concerns, feel free to contact me at (7170-389-2350. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

Chloe Monk
