A Thousand Year Journey

The sun was beating down on me and as I trudged across the deep sand I could see the

heat hovering over the endless desert around me. I walked on pulling a sleigh full of my

belongings behind me. As I wiped the sweat from my brow my mind couldn’t stop going back to

the time when I had started this journey. A thousand years ago I left home to discover a new

place, a thousand years ago I had embarked on a journey that a thousand years later still has not

come to an end. Everyday I wonder if there is a place beyond this lone barren desert and if so

why haven't I gotten there yet?

It seems to be hotter outside so I think summer is on the verge of approaching. I am

starting to run low on water so hopefully I will run into a small lake are maybe a cactus in which

I can collect some more water. The wind is howling by, blowing sand around with it. It has

created a small cloud out on the horizon so I have decided to stop and set up a tent to wait out the

incoming storm. I had just zipped up my tent when I could hear the wind start to pick up and the

sand crash against the thin fabric protecting me.

I fitfully slept through that night and by the time I had woken up the wind had died down

and I couldn’t hear the sand crashing up against the thin fabric of the tent. I opened up the flap

the flap of the tent and stepped outside on the fresh coat of sand on the desert floor. I looked out

at the horizon scanning the surroundings for any more approaching storms. Then I saw a glint. I

was almost finished convincing myself that it was just a mirage until I saw it again. I narrowed

my eyes and that is when I saw it.

I was quite far away from what I saw but I am quite sure now that it was some sort of tall

the metal building. I quickly gathered my belongings and started running. I had never been so

excited. I was at my destination. Finally after a thousand years I felt at peace almost calm. I had

been yearning for something that would make me feel at home and confident, and that something

was coming at me faster and faster. That is when my bare foot hit something. It wasn’t hard like

a desert rock or grainy like the desert sand. No this was soft, lush, and a bit damp.

As I walked past the tall massive buildings along the hard, slightly rough ground I felt

happy. I was no longer alone, no longer lonely. I had found peace that I had been searching for

since before I had started this thousand year journey and it was the best feeling ever.
