Interviewer: Andy, you work in a hotel here in Shanghai, right?
Andy: Yes. I’m an assistant manager. This is my second year here.
Interviewer: Oh, so I guess you like your job?
Andy: Sure! But I work hard. I often work over fifty hours a week.
Interviewer: Everyone works long hours in Shanghai! What’s a typical work day like for you?
Andy: Well, I get up at six, eat breakfast, and then start work at seven. I always have
lunch at noon, and in the afternoon, I usually have meetings, or sometimes I help
hotel guests with any problems.
Interviewer: And how do you like Shanghai?
Andy: It’s great! The people, the food … everything!
Interviewer: Where do you live? Do you live in the center?
Andy: I’m lucky because I live in the hotel.
Interviewer: That’s great!
Andy: Yeah. I always eat here, too, so I can save money. I never work in the evenings, so
I like to go out with friends a lot!
Interviewer: I see. Where do you usually go when you go out?
Andy: Downtown to a place called Club Paradise. Shanghai has a great nightlife.
Interviewer: Do you work on weekends?
Andy: Hardly ever. I usually bike around the city on Sundays.

Interviewer: Do you work on the weekends, Mia?
Mia: No, I don’t. I only work five days a week. I have the weekends free.
Interviewer: So, what do you usually do? Do you plan your free time?
Mia: Yes, I always plan what to do. On Saturday mornings I usually go to the fitness
center. I love it. Then I have lunch downtown with Sue and Mike, my American
friends, and we go shopping or sometimes we play basketball. I really like
basketball, but I’m not very good. I usually get home around 4 o’clock.
Interviewer: And what about in the evenings? Do you stay home?
Mia: No way! I hate staying home on Saturday nights! I often go out to eat with my
family. We go to a restaurant around 7:00, and after that I go to a nightclub with
my sister.
Interviewer: That sounds like a fun night.
Mia: Yeah. I like nightclubs!
Interviewer: What do you do on Sundays?
Mia: Well, I play badminton in the morning and then I study for two hours.
Interviewer: Do you like studying on Sundays?
Mia: I don’t mind. I’m learning French and English. I enjoy it.
Interviewer: And after lunch, what do you do?
Mia: I go hiking. There are some great places near here. Hiking is very popular in Korea.
Interviewer: So, I guess you’re tired by Sunday evening?
Mia: Yes, I am. I just stay at home and watch TV.
Interviewer: I see. Do you ever chat online with friends?
Mia: No. I don’t like doing that. I prefer to call them.
Interviewer: Well, thanks very much, Mia. Hope you have a good weekend!
Mia: Thanks.

Dear Victoria,
Hi from Melbourne! I’m staying with friends. Their apartment is beautiful. It’s next to a park.
Right now, I’m sitting in the park and writing you! Melbourne is great. The weather is
wonderful. Every day I take a walk. I love seeing the buildings. On weekends I go to the
university student center to teach British culture. I really like meeting people from many
countries. We often go out to lunch together.
Anyway, how are you? Write me soon or come visit!
Love,
Jasmine

Interviewer: Now, Alistair, can you tell me about your hobby? It’s interesting, isn’t it?
Alistair: Well, I think so. I’m an autograph hunter. That means I ask famous people for their
signatures. I keep them all in this black book, here …
Interviewer: Oh yes, I see. Wow. There are a lot!
Alistair: Over three hundred!
Interviewer: That’s amazing. So, when did you start autograph hunting as a hobby?
Alistair: When I was sixteen.
Interviewer: Really? Why did you start then?
Alistair: Because my father worked for Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg invited all the staff
and their families to a party in London.
Interviewer: Oh yeah?
Alistair: I just walked up and asked him for his autograph and he signed it … here.
Interviewer: Oh, so that’s the founder of Facebook’s autograph. Wow.
Alistair: Yeah, my first. So after that I started to look for famous people. Rihanna came to
London last month and I met her outside a hotel. This is her signature, here …
13
Interviewer: Oh yes.
Alistair: And I got Usain Bolt’s autograph when he went to the London Olympics. I saw
him at the training camp.
Interviewer: Is that why you went to the London Olympics?
Alistair: Yes! I do whatever I can to get these signatures. I went to Spain last year to get
Penelope Cruz’s signature, but I couldn’t find her.
Interviewer: That’s too bad.
Alistair: Yes, but then I saw her at the airport in London! See, this is her signature here …
Interviewer: Oh yes. So, what’s the last signature you got?
Alistair: The last one is this … Prince William’s! He came to open a new hospital last
month near where I live.
Interviewer: That’s great! I guess you can sell these and get a lot of money.
Alistair: Yes, but I don’t want to. It’s my hobby!
Interviewer: Well, good luck and thanks very much, Alistair, for telling me about it.
Alistair: You’re welcome. Oh, can I have your autograph?

Beth: I’m fairly outgoing, so I always talk to the customers and help them with their shopping
and things like that. The salary is higher, which is good. It’s the reason I changed jobs,
actually. The problem is that my co-workers aren’t as sociable as in my last job.
Hyun-Jin: Recently I started teaching a young girl named Naomi. She’s the daughter of a friend
of my parents. She’s more easygoing than the last student I had, which is good, but it’s bad
in a way because I have to be stricter, and I don’t like that.
Daisy: I love riding motorcycles, and the one I use in this job is better than the one I had in my
old job, so that’s good. The problem is my new boss. He’s the most bad-tempered person
I’ve ever met. I think I’ll quit next month.

Example answer
The northeast is probably the coldest part of the U.S. Thirty years ago they had a record 39
feet of snow in one year! People on the east coast like to think they are more sophisticated than
other people, but I don’t know if it is true or not. The four seasons are very distinct there, and
more tourists go there for the fall leaves than anywhere else. It’s hot and humid in the south, but
the people in the south are famous for being friendlier than in any other part of the country.
People from the midwest are known as being more hard-working than other people. I think it’s
because they have farms and don’t have a choice. The summers are extremely hot and the winters
are very cold, so maybe that makes them tougher, too. The west coast is famous for the beautiful
scenery and sunshine. Some of the richest people live on the west coast, including many movie
and TV stars.

to kill King James I, but they didn’t succeed!

Interviewer: So what’s your plan for Bonfire Night this year, Ed?
Ed: Well, I’m going to build a large bonfire at college, with some other students.
And we’re going to have lots of fireworks, of course.
Interviewer: Are you going to set them off?
Ed: No, they’re very big fireworks so it’s dangerous. Someone from the firework
company is going to do that.
Interviewer: What about food?
Ed: Well, it’s traditional to eat jacket potatoes, I love them so I think I’ll have a
lot!
Interviewer: Do people dress up? You know, in traditional clothes?
Ed: Not really, no. It’s cold! I’ll probably wear a coat and scarf.
Interviewer: How about decorations? Are you going to put up decorations?
Ed: No, we don’t put up decorations for Bonfire Night. It’s dark!
Interviewer: Oh, I see. OK, Ed. Well, thank you very much for coming today.
Ed: No problem.

An important celebration in my country is Independence Day, on July 4. I’m going
to celebrate it with my parents and my two sisters. In the morning, we’re going to go and
watch the parade in our town. At lunchtime, we’ll probably have a picnic in the park if the
weather’s nice. After that, we’ll go for a long walk by the river. In the evening, we’ll watch
the firework display and then go and eat in a local restaurant.

a Listen to Clare, from Texas, in the US, talks about her successful
business. What does her company do?
Her company collects old cell phones, cleans and reprograms them and then sells them in
other countries.

Transcript
Interviewer: Clare, you’ve managed a very successful recycling business here in Austin for
three years now, is that right?
Clare: Yes, that’s right.
Interviewer: And you’ve just won an environmental award for all your work?
Clare: Yes, I have. That was a surprise!
Interviewer: So, can you tell me about your business?
Clare: Sure. I collect old cell phones. I check they work, reprogram them and clean them …
and then I sell them, so people in other countries can use them again.
Interviewer: That’s great, so you’re making money and helping the planet.
Clare: Yes. People in the U.S. throw away over one hundred and ten million cell phones
every year. Every old cell phone that someone reuses helps to save the planet’s
resources.
Interviewer: How many phones have you collected since you started your business?
Clare: Oh, I guess I’ve collected around fifty thousand.
Interviewer: Wow. And where do you get all the phones from?
Clare: Government departments, and large companies that replace their cell phones
often. They’re happy to get rid of them.
Interviewer: And you’ve just started to collect from schools and colleges, too, haven’t you?
Clare: Yes, around one hundred schools have already agreed to have special collection
bins. Kids throw their old phone into the bin, and every two weeks I go and
collect them!
Interviewer: Good idea! So, do you get all these phones for free?
Clare: No. I pay around 10 dollars for each phone I can use.
Interviewer: And where do you sell them? I mean, who wants an old cell phone?
Clare: Are you kidding? There’s a huge demand for old cell phones, especially in
Africa – new ones are too expensive. I’ve just sent twenty thousand to Nigeria,
for example.
Interviewer: Wow. How much do you charge for each phone?
Clare: Around twenty dollars is an average price, although I charge more for newer
phones.
Interviewer: So you’re making big money. Have you made a million dollars yet?
Clare: Not yet, but I’ve already got three offices and I’m expanding all the time so I
will soon!

My new tablet is my favorite gadget. I’ve had it for about six months. This machine can
do lots of different things. I use it to browse the internet and to chat online with friends. I listen to
music, watch movies, and play games on my tablet, and it’s also great for storing photos. It has a
fantastic display, so the words and images on the screen are clearer than on my laptop and the
colours are brilliant. I like to read in bed before I go to sleep, and with the tablet it’s easy. I can
download all the books I want to read and turn the pages with a touch of my finger. It’s a
powerful machine, but it’s also light and easy to carry round with me. I love it!
