D
espite having a double garage of
my own, I still find myself renting a
shipping container. It really irks me that
I still shell out for this, but I’ve recently come
to terms with it. You see, a guy can never
have enough garage space for his assorted
treasures. One half of my garage is currently
home to my Swedish ’58 Beetle (with its
engine sat on a pallet next to it) and the other
half - where the Bay usually resides - is full
of bathroom gubbins and assorted non-
VW projects. So, I now see the lock-up as a
necessary monthly outgoing as it means I can
store all of my VWs out of the elements and
still have a place to work on bits stuff.
It took a bit of organising as there was all
manner of actual junk flung in the shipping

container but it needed to be done as the
weather was beginning to take its toll on
the Bus. Not only were the Fuchs starting
to look a bit ropey, but bare metal areas of
patina were turning orange and the tailgate
was leaking. She’s tucked up nice and dry for
now, but having just bought a cheap Chinese
diesel heater for her, I think she’ll be out for a
weekend soon so I can get that installed.
The smart thing to do would be to keep
her ticking over during the winter. Fire her up
once a week and take her for a spin around
the block when the weather allows. Better
that than to end up with a flat battery and
allow the Gremlins in. Old cars need to be
driven, they love it. In fact, cars in general just
want to run. I’ve noticed this as I’ve recently
become a bit addicted to watching people
starting-up abandoned classics on Youtube.
My particular favourite is Vice Grip Garage.
His tongue-in-cheek approach to getting old
Yank tanks running after 20 or so years sitting
in the woods has frittered away too many
working hours than I care to admit, but there’s
nothing cooler than seeing an old car being
brought back to life and driven out of where
it had been left to rot.

Hi Camper&Bus, I love the mag and read
it cover to cover. There’s always lots of
interesting vehicles for inspiration as
I finish off my Early Bay, but no pun
intended, one bug is that when you
report on shows you often don’t say
where they take place or when. A case in
point in the December ‘19 issue and Beach
Dubbin’. It looks like great fun and could
extend to a longer break. But where and
when is it? Could you please add this info
to future reports?
BTW, my Bus is nearly back from the
dead after about four years of work,
lots of trials and tribulations and finally
finding reliable, good, people to finish it.
If you’re interested let me know and I’ll
provide more info.

saw the show report
on Beach Dubbin’ in last
month’s issue and wanted
to say thanks ever so much for that, it’s
always massively appreciated, however
there was one little error. The names
of the organisers that the writer Paul
included in his article were incorrect.
It wouldn’t normally be an issue but
there are actually six of us who organise
the show and I feel that everyone in the
team should get a mention.
The actual organisers are, Sue and
Grant Sharley, Kate and Mark Burch and
Charlotte and Jason Crotty. Not Dave
Western as stated in the article (although
he is one of our volunteers and was our
compère for the day).
I hope you don’t mind me emailing but

GAME
Sometimes, when something is right
you just know, like when a friend
offers you your dream VW Camper

ere’s a feature that’s been a long
time coming. Well, actually you could
argue it’s been in the pipeline since
1968, when this Bus rolled out of
Hanover and was loaded on a boat bound for
America. But, we’re not going that far back, just
to the Spring 2019 issue when we featured Leon
Taylor’s Delta Green Early Bay Westy. (It was
actually the rather lush cover star.)
You see, at the same time we had our intrepid
snapper Steve Sharp shoot that, he also shot
Simon Hardy’s ’68. This ’68. These Buses couldn’t
be more different from one another. Leon’s
Delta Green ’69 is a totally stock, fully restored
and painted Bus and Simon’s ’68? It looks like a
pizza that’s been popped in the oven as Game of
Thrones was about to start and forgotten. Trust
us on that one.
However, under that crispy exterior is a
fully sorted and much-loved machine. Both
of the vehicles we’ve already mentioned were
imported by Leon, who you’ve probably guessed
by now, is a really good friend of Simon. As
Simon says: “I’ve been into VWs for the last
25 years. Like most people I started out with
Beetles before realising there were better ways
to camp than tents. It was actually Leon who
turned me onto Campers and I’ve now owned
four Buses and have to say I prefer Bay Windows.
It’s just my own personal preference.

“I wasn’t actually looking to buy another Bus as
I already owned one. I’d already spent a load of
money on it but as soon as I saw this ’68 I just
knew this was the one for me.
“I sold the other Bus and immediately turned
my attention to getting this one how I wanted it.
“A lot of people thought I was crazy because
my other Bay - a patina’d ’72 - had the look, but

it didn’t have the earlier and much prettier rear
end. Plus, this is just such a solid vehicle and the
only welding it’s ever had is a battery tray, which
was only done once it landed in the UK
“I’ve always worked on my own cars. Leon’s a
fantastic help as he knows how to do everything,
but makes me do all of the work myself once
he’s told me what I need to do. He’d already gone
through the mechanicals and got it on the road,
which meant I was free to get on with all the
interesting stuff.

Going down
Of course, by interesting we mean modifying.
And it doesn’t take a doctorate in product design
to realise that most of the modifying here was
concentrated on the suspension.
To get an Early Bay to sit low, and truth be
told, this 6’68 isn’t even that low - just sensible/
usable and cool low - it does take a fair amount
of work. You need to notch the chassis to avoid
things like drive shafts bumping and grinding
themselves to death underneath.
To that end, some small notches were cut into
the chassis and Leon stepped up to the plate
and tackled the only other welding this Bus has
experienced thus far.
The front end has been lowered using a
narrowed and adjustable beam from Dogback
Beam Performance in Germany. You can find
them by carrying out a quick search on eBay, and
it would be well worth it, because we know from
personal experience (we have a Dogback beam
on our own project Bay) just how good these

front ends are. For those who don’t know, the

big difference over a lot of beams is they have
caster adjustment. You can basically set it drive
and track like a stock-height Bus. If you pay no
head to what lowering your Bus has done to the
caster it will skitter about all over the place, so
spending a little more on a top-quality beam like
this is money well spent in our humble opinion.
Added to the Dogback beam are a pair of 3.5-
inch dropped spindles and the rear has been
wound down on the splines until everything
levelled out.
Whilst all this was going on, the opportunity
was taken to renew all of the wheel bearings
and go through the entire braking system.
Scooting the whole shooting-match along is a
fresh 1641cc motor from The VW Engine Co. in
deepest, darkest Catford (you can find them at
www.thevwenginecompany.com).
Simon opted to buy one of their brand new
cases rather than a reconditioned one and it’s
proven to be 100% reliable so far. Which is great
for piece of mind, unlike the old 1600 that came
in the Bus. Simon admits: “The old engine ran
okay, and felt throaty enough, but there was just
so much sludge inside it that it wasn’t going to
last forever.
“The Beetle twin pea-shooter exhausts were
on the old engine when I bought it. I liked the
sound they make so I fitted the old exhaust to
the new engine.”

interior. There was just an old bench seat in the

back when it came over from the States, but
Leon had a couple of camping interiors in his
stash and Simon opted for this one.
Like a lot of people discover when they come
to fit one, the Westy fridge/sink unit took up way
too much room. “There was no Van left,” Simon
laughs, so he decided to leave it out.
The upholstery came with the interior. Simon
would prefer the mustard-coloured Westy
material, but it’s fine for now and he’d only be
changing it for the sake of it really.

Salty question
Having been, as he puts it: “Always VW crazy,”
Simon has learned the value of doing as much
on his cars as he can himself. “It saves money
and means you connect with it on a different

’91 Syncro 4x4, Joss Wickson
J
oss Wickson’s Syncro 4x4 was an ex-
Yorkshire Water Board Van, then run by
an electrical company and he’s owned
it for almost four years. “We completed
a whole lot of work down at Doug’s VW
Works, at Angmering in West Sussex,” says
Joss. “In fact it was down there for nearly
a year. As we took it to pieces, it got worse
and worse as prior to my ownership, it
must have led a very hard life. Even now
the bodywork isn’t the best, but I don’t
really care about that right now, because
it gets scratched and bumped around. We
have photos of the restoration work that

took place at Doug’s, which included the
suspension and chassis rails, which were
a real mess, so we took it to pieces, had
everything cleaned up and purchased new
parts where necessary and put it all back
together and it actually ran very well. That
is until 2017, when we blew the engine up.
The 1.6 turbo diesel engine gave up the
ghost, so this was replaced with another 1.6
turbo diesel. I’m please to report that she’s
running very well now.”
The interior is all bespoke and installed
by Joss. “Usually there are four of us, myself
and my wife and the two kids. My son

sleeps outside in a tent and my daughter sleeps in the
top bed. I bought the base units from a company called
something Wagon and they only traded for about a
year and then they disappeared. The guy was lovely and
made the units exactly to my specifications. There’s two
gas rings for cooking and a sink. We use the Syncro for
camping at lots of festivals and other trips to Dorset.
The kids love it and it’s just great to get out and
about and camp during the summer. With the 4x4
capability, we don’t have to worry about getting stuck
anywhere! It’s a bit of a workhorse and my wife is
a keen Supa, so we take her paddle board and wet

suits with us, as well as a kayak. We also have a tank
attached to the side of the Syncro which says diesel, but
in fact this is a water container for our outside shower!”
The chunky 16-inch alloy wheels fitted to the Syncro
are from a Honda 4x4. “I’m still not massively happy
with the wheels and am still playing around with what
I really want,” says Joss. “Future plans include a proper
roof-mounted solar panel installation, so that we can
have a much larger fridge, etc. Just after we fitted the
new engine, my father-in-law painted the mural on the
front doors, which reads ‘Project Bankrupt’ as a bit of a
giggle and hopefully it won’t reach fruition!”

in the US and now back in its
land of origin, you could say this super-rare
1959 Swivel-Seat Kombi has done the rounds.
Let’s see if anyone kept the tracking number

A
nyone who wandered
onto the Just Kampers
stand at last year’s
VolksWorld Show will
have immediately clocked this
super-rare 11-window Split. To
the casual admirer it’s unusual
due to the (Canadian) Royal
Mail livery, but the Split Screen
cognoscenti unanimously
flipped their wigs once they
took a peep inside…
You see, when it comes to
rare, this former post van
knocks your Barndoor Samba’s
into a cocked hat. If you’re
still not convinced, take a look
at the interior pics and you’ll
notice there’s something more
than a little out of the ordinary
in the cab area – specifically
the front bulkhead(s) because
they aren’t there. Neither is
there a passenger seat and the
driver’s seat? Well, it swivels!
So yeah, forget about corner
windows and Golde sunroofs,
this is a factory-built Swivel-
Seat Kombi and is one of only
11 known world-wide, which
is how and why it came to
be saved by John Jones of
Colorado-based KCW fame.
When John first saw this

in Canada it was looking
extremely worse for wear and

and probably last time we’ll
feature a Swivel Seat Kombi in
Camper&Bus, they’re that rare
that obscured its true identity.
Trees had to be cut down and a
winch called into play to rescue
it from the woods and it was
missing most of the interior,
but importantly, the drivers
seat, with swivel mechanism
was all present and correct,
albeit missing the upholstery
and the rear seats were AWOL.
Had it just been another
regular rusty 11-window
Kombi, the likelihood is it
would have just been left to rot,
or passed on to someone else
who wanted to spend the next

carrying out rust repairs. There
would have been much easier
Buses to put back on the road
than this one, but not Swivel-
Seats. John knew this one had
to be saved, so steamed into
the work it needed, and it
needed a lot. In a nutshell, the
entire bottom six-inches were
roached out. We’re talking the
cab and cargo floors, sills, front
arches, I-beams, out-riggers,
bottoms of the rear corners - it
was crispy pretty much all over.

himself. Obviously it helped
that he does this sort of thing
for a living. Building panels
from scratch is all in a days
work for KCW and sure comes
in handy when you have to
repair obscure sections, like the
rusty swivel-seat base. They’re
not exactly the most catered
for models are they?

was sandblasted and epoxy
sealed. This was done prior
to the new floors going in as
John wanted to paint all the
areas you can’t get to. With all
that done the body was given a

It was the swivel seat
arrangement that first sold
the Bus to John and the
Postal Service livery was just
an unexpected bonus and
fantastic discovery. Having sat
for a number of months after
buying it, John was cleaning
the rear hatch when he noticed
the faint outlines of some
old sign writing. Careful wet
sanding and polishing revealed
the Bus’s former identity and
once discovered, there was no
way this Bus wasn’t getting its
original livery back.
As rare as it us undoubtedly
is, the ‘59 was never likely to
be a keeper and eventually
John put it up for sale. The
Bus was entered into the
Scotsdale Auction in Arizona

Denzel-powered Low Light
Karmann Ghia coupe that
was in the same sale and
then got what he described
as “Auction fever” when the
Bus rolled across the block. He
says: “The catalogue estimate
was $50,000 - $70,000 and I
thought I definitely don’t need
it for that, but it was being sold
without reserve and when it
failed to reach its estimate I
thought it was too good a thing
to miss out on and bought it to
use as a PR vehicle. It’s things
like this that show why I’m
not allowed to attend auctions

“No one at Goodwood knew
what it was, but it turned a
lot of heads. I loved the postal
nature, but I bought it with my
heart rather than my head. I
have a policy of no more than
five cars in my collection at
any one time and when a
Dannenhauer and Strauss
came up that I wanted more,
this was sold as part of the
deal to buy the D&S. It’s gone
full circle now. It was built in
Germany, shipped to Canada,
found and restored in Colorado,
shipped over here and has
now gone back to Germany.”

Wolfsburg bound
25 days and 3,500 miles cramped in a Camper might sound
daunting, but not when you have an LT on the fleet

o it’s the annual summer trip the night before catching a 9.25am
to mother in laws to Slovenia. ferry didn’t go as planned. We
I have been making this trip ended up being an hour and a half
for the last 17 years but this late because of the traffic in Dover
year I wanted it to be more of a road but luckily the boat was delayed
trip in my VW LT Westfalia Florida too, so we still managed to catch

sports. Unfortunately, it was a rainy
day so we decided to go for a walk
through a park and looked around
a lovely swiss town of Morges. The
next morning we visited Geneva.
Driving to a city like Geneva with
a high-top Campervan was not the
best idea but we managed to park
for two hours beside the lake and see
famous Jet d’eau. We enjoyed a cup
of tea in the Camper while having
the amazing view of Geneva lake.
We were looking forward to seeing
the United Nations Palace and the
boys were excited to find UK flags.
What a treat that was,especially for
my wife and two boys. What to be
aware of in Geneva is where you walk
as cycle lanes are on the pavement
and we had quite a lot of people
shouting or ringing bells. One man
even rode into my wing mirror whilst
we were standing still at traffic light.
I wasn’t amused. It was time to drive
to the next German-speaking area of
Switzerland - a campsite in Reinach
- Camping Waldhort. I cannot say
that it was one of the best campsites
we stayed at but it had everything,
swimming pool for boys, a shop and
all the other washing facilities. The
best part of staying there
was a free ticket for the
tram to travel to Basel.
Basel is a beautiful city
on the river Rhine. All
in all, Switzerland is an
extremely clean country
- expensive but definitely
worth visiting.
After two days in
Switzerland it was time
to leave for Liechtenstein.
On the way there we
stopped in Zurich for
our boys, especially the
youngest one, Nathan who
is football mad, to see the
FIFA museum. And being
Tuesday they had an offer
of 50% off for entrance
tickets which was a bonus.
Driving to Liechtenstein
with the beautiful Swiss mountains
and lakes, we arrived at one of my
favourite campsites - Camping
Mittagsspitze in Triesen. Views were

amazing and we were also lucky to

get the best spot on the campsite.
The campsite had everything
you’d need, although the food on
the menu in the restaurant was
expensive so we opted for a BBQ
instead. The boys enjoyed the pool
at the top of the campsite with a
lovely view down the valley and
surrounding mountains. Whilst in
Liechtenstein we checked out the
small capital Vaduz and continued
our travels through Germany to
the next stop in Austria with the
campsite next to Salzburg.
With another early start the next
day we arrived to Slovenia. It was
another hot and sunny day and on
my wife Sabina’s recommendation,
we visited beautiful Vintgar
gorge. She wasn’t wrong, it is an
untouched and idyllic place at the
eastern edge of the Triglav National
Park with a fresh air, crystal clear
water and lots of trout and salmon
to be seen.
The next campsite - Camping
Perun - was in the small village

of Lipce and yet another
small and beautiful place
situated along the reservoir
on the river Sava with all
the amenities which offered
lots of holiday activities like
mountaineering, cycling,
fishing, rowing, swimming
in the river Sava, a small
wooden bar area and
delicious outdoor cooked
BBQ. From there onwards it
was a drive to the Slovenian
coast for a well-earned two
night stay by the sea. As
a small country, Slovenia
has so much to offer -
mountains, lovely old coastal
towns or vineyards stocked
with lots of local wines. We
spent a very hot week at the
mother-in-law’s and visiting
my wife’s relatives, also
enjoying local swimming
pools, one of our favourites
is Terme Ptuj with
many outdoor
slides, lazy water,
and a wave pool.
It was time to enjoy the last leg
of our road trip, with a very long
drive through Austria. With few
stops it took us over six hours
to finally arrive at our night
stop in Pielenhofen and for an
early morning drive to Campsite
Sanssouci in Potsdam. Again, on
a lake with incredible facilities
and lots to do, such as swimming,
renting bicycles, pedal go-karts,
water sports, a restaurant, shop,
gas bottle exchange, lots of indoor
entertainment for kids, even
renting a car for a day.
It’s a campsite you could happily
spend a few days at and it even
offers a free car service to the
nearby tram,which takes you to
Potsdam and from there the train
to Berlin.
What a city! It’s full of history,
but as we only had a day, which
is not enough, we headed to see
the remains of the Berlin wall,
and Checkpoint Charlie with its
small museum with lots of videos
about life in Berlin during and
after the cold war. We went to see
Berlin story which is a museum
in one of the bunkers that Hitler
built towards the end of WW2, The
Brandenburg Gate, a memorial
to the murdered Jews, we walked

past the Reichstag building. You could
also rent a Trabant for a day and it
was one of the cities my wife has
always wanted to visit - she was not
disappointed. The city, which is very
vibrant and where everyone enjoys
helping you out when lost is definitely
a fantastic place to visit.
From there we headed towards
Wolfsburg. To me this was the main
part of the holiday. On arrival, the
first thing that stuck with me was just
how many VWs there were on the
roads. We stayed at the campsite just
down the road from Autostadt.
We had booked a tour of the factory
where you catch a boat down the
river and the first thing you spot are
the iconic factory chimneys. What
a sight! With a huge VW sign on the
end. The factory tour was fascinating
even though it was in German.
Luckily my wife translated most of it.
To see the production line was really

Autostadt
didn’t disappoint
either. Sporting
typical German
engineering and
architecture it is
just fascinating.
There was a lot for kids to do and to
look at, with many showrooms with
the latest cars to sit and experience
them. Nathan,who is seven, had the
chance to drive a little Beetle on the
road created for children and even
got a driving licence. Sadly, having
ran out of time I never got to look
around the Oldtimer museum so I
have to leave that for next time.
From there we drove to the
Nurburgring, which was my oldest
son, Reuben’s favourite bit of the trip.
We have been to the Nurburgring
before so we knew where to go and
park up to watch people race on the
outer track and see some spinning
off. Sadly, our trip was coming to an
end. We had one night left in France
and then had to catch an early train
back across the Channel.
All in all, it was a most enjoyable
25 days. Some people might say
that driving 3,500 miles whilst on
holiday would not be their idea
of fun but they obviously have
never owned a VW Camper
before. Thanks to my wife
Sabina for planning the
entire trip, which I must say,
went very well. And now it’s
time to plan our next one…

We’ve noticed a growing trend in
high rise Bays in recent months.
Maybe raised is the new low?

ary Dunlop is no
stranger to the classic
VW scene, he’s a
stalwart member of the
Splitterz VW Club and over the
years, has owned many Beetles,
Bay Windows (around 12) and
a Type 25, some of which have
graced our pages before. He
also came this close to owning
a Karmann Gipsy, but sadly the
deal didn’t come to fruition.
And, having sold his mint-
condition, two owner from new
Type 25 with only 46,000 on
the clock, Gary found himself
without a Bus. “I should maybe
have kept the Type 25, but once
you make your mind up to sell
something, then often there’s
no going back,” he muses.
“Isn’t hindsight a wonderful
thing?! It became a standing
joke amongst fellow Splitterz
members Dave, Kieron, Tim
and Fenton, who would take
great pleasure in reminding
me, whenever I mentioned that
I couldn’t find a replacement
Bus, that I had sold possibly
the best Holdsworth in the
country. It remained a running
joke for an entire year, until I
bought this Westy!”
Gary had been on the hunt
for another Type 25, as it sat
well between a classic Split
or Bay Window and a T4 or
T5 - the latter being more
expensive in terms of tax,
insurance, servicing and
running costs.
A year went by and nothing
had really floated Gary’s boat
but he had managed to save
up a little more money, so
his budget was looking a bit
healthier. “My son Brandon
kept on at me. He kept saying:
“When are we getting another
Bay? Get a Bay! Get a Bay! Get
a Bay!” He recalls. “I thought,
if a suitable example did come
along, it would have to be a
pop-top Westy, as that’s what
I like. I’m a complete Westy
freak. I love the interiors as
they’re a good usable set-up.”
In August 2018, Gary, his
family and parents, jumped
aboard a taxi bound for
Heathrow Airport - they were
going to the Caribbean - a
once in a life time holiday for
them. Whiling the time away
on the journey to Heathrow,
Gary started looking at an App
on his mobile ’phone called
Pre-loved, which is a kind of
digital bootfair page. The App
knows your location and lists
items in your area. Somewhere
on the M25, near Heathrow,
an advert popped up… It
made no mention of the words
Volkswagen, Campervan,
Bay Window, or Westfalia. In
fact, there were no words to
indicate it was a VW Camper
at all! The title of the advert
was literally the vendor’s name

“It was literally five miles from where
we were on the M25,” says Gary. “The
advert was very, very vague, but it did
mention only two owners, coming
from California, rust-free and original
paint. This looked promising and it
was unlikely any other VW enthusiast
looking to buy a Bay, would find this
advert anytime soon? So there I was
sitting aboard a plane on the tarmac
at Heathrow and I telephoned the
seller. Unfortunately, there was no
answer, so I sent him a few emails
and turned my mobile ’phone off.
“When we arrived in the Caribbean,
I checked my mobile, but there were
no messages, so I telephoned a mate,
Dave and asked him if he could
contact the vendor and let him know
that I was quite interested in buying
his Bay. That’s when I received some
more photos of the Bus and further
details from the vendor, which again
looked very promising.”
As soon as Gary returned from
holiday, he went to view the Bay
the very next day. A test drive was
completed - with the seller driving -
and everything seemed okay. It was
a fine example - as advertised - and
most importantly, the purchase price
was just within budget.
With cash in his back pocket, Gary
did a little haggling on the price, as
the Bay did need some attention in
several areas. A deal was struck and
the Bay was soon sitting in Gary’s
driveway. The way in which this Bus
was acquired is a tad unusual to say
the least, but the end result was still
the same - job done!
The Bus needed quite a bit of TLC
when it came to the paintwork, which
had gone rather flat, so Gary and his
son Brandon spend the best part of
18 hours cleaning, polishing and fine
detailing. Then Brandon suggested
they take it for a long drive at the
weekend… “Everything went well,
selecting first, second and third gear,
but when engaging fourth gear, there
was a clunk,” groaned Gary. “Fourth
gear was knackered. I rang the vendor
and explained the dilemma and he
replied that yes, there was a bit of a
quirk with fourth gear. On the test
drive it didn’t appear to jump out of
fourth gear. Anyway, to cut a long
story short, the vendor agreed to
foot the bill to remedy the problem.”
Fair play to him. True to his word, he
made a BACS payment to Gary’s bank

account by the end of the

day. Though in essence, the
vendor must surely have
known there was a problem
with the gearbox? Gary
isn’t so sure, as although he
wasn’t an avid VW owner/
enthusiast, he didn’t skimp
or cut corners, as the Bay
was regularly maintained at
a garage and recently had a
new carburettor fitted to the
2-litre engine. He also said
if he’d known there was a
problem with the gearbox, it
would have been sorted out
prior to the sale.
A VW specialist, repaired
the gearbox and in error
actually fitted superior
gearing. Advantage Gary!
Various other jobs were
completed by Bugmad from
Roydon, near Harlow, Essex,
which included a little
welding behind the rear
bumper, repainting the roof,
fitting a new canvas to the
elevating top and completely
new ICE, with a Bluetooth
head unit. Gary also decided
to change the exterior look a
little with a ‘lifted look’.
Gary initially fitted 15-
inch steel wheels, with
chunky all terrain tyres.
However, he then sourced
a set of five Mercedes-Benz
wheels and BF Goodrich
205/75-15 tyres. Then he
fitted a set of uprated KYB
adjustable gas-dampers and
heavy-duty anti-roll bars
front and rear.
The front suspension
has also been raised on
adjusters and the rear has been
raised one spline. Together
with the wheels and tyres,
everything now sits several
inches higher.
Gary has also incorporated
a little personalisation, by
fitting front and rear bumper
over riders, one of which is
GRP, but you’d never know the
difference.
The Westy interior is
remarkably well-preserved
and complete in every respect,
although Gary’s wife, Lisa
chose the new funky curtains
with Hawaiian flowers and
1950’s pin-up girls.
It’s not until you see the
recently added cushions from
a roll of new material, that
you can tell the original seat
covering is at all faded, which
is only to be expected after 43
years! “Absolutely everything
works too,”enthused Gary.
“Even the original Westfalia
propane tank that powers the
cooker. It only costs £2.80 to fill
up with gas, which should last
a whole season. I’ve had Bays
before with a propane tank,
but none of them ever worked.

“They were rusty as hell and

you just wouldn’t trust them.
“I also have a diesel heater
(of Chinese origin, run via an 11
litre tank) that has been fitted
under the Bus. It’s protected by
a custom made belly pan and is
connected to the stock heating
system.
“There’s also a 160-watt solar
panel on the roof for additional
charging, to run the fridge and
to charge mobile ’phones.”
Gary has got the Bay pretty
much how he wants it now,
although a future job may
entail giving the steel wheels a
fresh lick of paint.
This Bus is not just for show
either, because as much as
Gary likes Show ‘n’ Shines, he
and his family love regularly
camping away more and when
we met up with him, he had
just returned from a two week
900 mile trip to Devon and
Cornwall, with no issues at all.
This Bay looks like it might
be a keeper for quite a while.

QUEX PARK
There’s something special about the Quex Park
meetings. Maybe it’s the great location, or the friendly
team that organise it. Whatever it is, we love it!

eld at the beautiful Quex
Park in Kent, not far from
Margate, this event is the
perfect family weekender,
and then some.
Steve ‘Mudman’ Brooker and his
team go over and above to make
everyone feel welcome, and there are
none of those hi-vis jackets that look
like they’d rather be anywhere but
stood in a field full of VWs you see at
other shows. This is where the Quex
crew thrive and it’s clear everyone
involved is a true VW enthusiast and
wants to be there.
Also, there’s so much well-
maintained space for clubs and
Campers that nobody is penned in,
or stuck in a rutted field. We heard
numerous positive comments about
not just the cleanliness of the toilets,
but the number of ‘boxes’ on site.
That might seem an odd comment,
but you’d be amazed how important

these details are to some.

However, it’s the overall vibe that
makes this show. In the words of
the organisers, ‘Think ’50’s holiday
camp meets village fête with a
dash of pantomime’ and a dash of
Wild West theme this year, too!
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t
a big-budget gig with stages and
bands, it’s more like a big old VW
family garden party and all the
better for it. With bunting, hay
bales and DIY décor, the devil is in
the detail, not the money spent,
when it comes down to creating
atmosphere, and these guys have
got it nailed.
Kids absolutely love this show
too, as there’s always something
going on. For mum and dad, if
you want to try something a little
different, you can even check
out the amazing Powell-Cotton
museum, or indeed Quex House
itself, and its gardens.
This one is also dog friendly, and
there’s a show ’n’ shine for canines
with trophies for Best Rat Hound,
Best Slammed Hound and a public
vote to determine who looks most
like their dog (or vice versa).
Add in trade stands, food stalls,
swap meet, bucking bronco (!) plus
a cool collection of show cars on
the lawns facing the house, all
vying for one of the coveted show
’n’ shine or club awards.
By night, there’s a party tent
and this year there was a barn
dance theme, with awards for the
best dressed cowboy / girl etc. The
music is always funky at Quex and
the party is for the whole family.
Incidentally, team Camper&Bus
fielded three entries in the Mr. VW
‘The Man’ competition. No polished
six packs here, the criteria was
hairiest back, most missing teeth,
beer belly size and other such
‘manly’ traits. Consequently, we did
pretty well! Monkey Mark trounced
the competition, leaving yours truly
in second place, due to a near full
face of teeth. Mark not only won
free entry in 2020, but was invited
back to wear the crown of Stella
and judge next year’s entries.
Meanwhile, I picked up a signed
and dedicated (to Geoffrey)
photograph of John Inman and
Norman Wisdom and, in typical
Quex style, they had me fill out a
deed poll form to change my name
to Geoffrey. Yep, that joke’s not
going away any time soon.

Bristol Volksfest
A very wet and a very, very muddy weekend in Brizzle

T
he build up to this year’s
Bristol Volksfest, held
just South of Bristol
(BS41 9AG) began at
least two weeks before the
event, with lighting, roadways
and even bars being fabricated
as the ever-present organisers
Ade, Pete and Jonno determined
to make this show better than
every other BVF that had gone
before it. However, in the days
leading up to the event, the
area was hit by a deluge of rain,
two months worth in fact in as
many days!
It was all hands on deck to
ensure that the show went
ahead, and with a steady flow
of people arriving from the
Thursday evening it became a
task to simply get in to the site.

With help from the organisers,

stewards and members of the
VeeDub family, visitors VWs
were pushed, pulled and skidded
their way on site.
Conditions worsened to a
point on the Friday where the
organisers were left with no
choice but to close the gates to
the main camping fields.
As it’s been said before, the
show must go on, and go on it
did. The day visitors car park
was quickly re-allocated as an
additional camping field, and
whilst it may have taken a little
longer to get some people in,
once they were in everyone was
determined to have a great time.
Although the conditions
meant that the unusual decision
had to be made to cancel
Sundays Show ‘n’ Shine, the rest
of the weekend continued, from
Friday night’s appearance of
GrandMaster Flash, to Saturday
nights fantastic ‘Oh My God It’s
The Church’ and everybody in
between.
One thing that was quite
apparent was the attitude and
willingness of pretty much
everybody at the show to pitch
in and help in one way or
another, whether in contributing
to the fantastic atmosphere, or
helping fellow campers in and
then out of the fields.
One to remember? Sure! Will
we be back? Of course we will
and the date for the 2020 Bristol
Volksfest has already been set
as 12-14 June. We’re hoping for
sunscreen rather than wellies!

How did you get into restoring VWs?
By the time I was about 12 or 13 years old, I’d
already been to RTTS (Run to the Sun) in Newquay a
few times. It was held in the next town to Padstow,
which is where I was brought up, so we used to go
along to see all of the cars and generally take in the
atmosphere. Air-cooled Volkswagens were always a
huge part of RTTS, even though it first started out as
a Custom Car Magazine event.
I really liked the VWs and my neighbour gave me
my first Bus – a ’62 Split Screen Devon that needed
a little work. Because I was still at school at the time,
I managed to organise some work experience at AH
Schofield in Glossop (www.alanhschofield.com) and
the rest, as they say is history. Working at Schofield’s
gave me a firm grounding in both VWs and metal
shaping. It also showed me that part of the beauty
of the VW scene is the people – I’m still really great
friends with Alan and all the team and Rick [Rowarth]
was the best man at my wedding and I was his.
I still help the guys out trading at VW shows
whenever I can.
When did your hobby become a business?
After working at Schofield’s, I enrolled on a three
year Classic Car Restoration course at college. I
was also restoring my own Bus at the time and it
just continued from there. I’ve never done anything
other than this and I still really
enjoy it; every build is different and
your skills keep improving over
time, especially as the builds that
everyone sees as viable these days
are vastly different to what was
seen as viable in the old days.
Have you noticed a difference in
how far people are willing to go
to restore Buses now?
It used to just be the norm that
you’d cut out and repair the
bottom six inches of a vehicle, but
nowadays you might find yourself
splitting a Bus from the chassis and
fitting an entirely new one.

just get on if I wasn’t there. The two of us have always

worked amazingly well together; we’ll generally take
a side each and just crack on with it, which helps
projects to move faster too.

What do you find yourselves working on most?

There’s always a lot of variety. We generally say
air-cooled VWs up to 1967, but we now have a
reputation for working on classic Porsches too, so it’s
not all massive Barndoor Bus builds. It’s really funny,
but we seem to have weird runs of several of the
same type of vehicle. For example, we did worked on
seven or eight Crew Cabs in a row, then four or five
Barndoors at one point.

Do you ever have time for projects of your own?

When we can, we also work on our own shop builds.
We usually build two or three cars each year for
ourselves, but they often end up being sold to pay
the bills or keep the business running, despite my
best intentions of keeping them. My 1950 10-window
Bus was one of those – I never wanted to sell it, but

it killed me financially and hours-wise; two months
prepping some
doors prior to without being paid but still having to buy parts and
paint blending those ’50 parts are insane price-wise. In the end, it
had to go as soon as it was done, which is often sad
but there’s also always the itch to restore another.

Do you just do full-on restos?

No. We tend to fit smaller jobs in around the bigger
builds as these help to pay the bills, especially as
some of the larger, more involved builds are carried
out to a pre-agreed set price. You can really come
unstuck with some of them. For example, Dave Hall’s
RHD Deluxe was work that we carried out to an
agreed price and we really screwed ourselves on the
amount of hours it ended up taking. We still loved
doing the job and were really happy he trusted us
with it, but jobs like that are probably not exactly
great from a business point of view.

You must really love welding.

I genuinely do still really love carrying out metal
repairs. Sure, it can get a little much for my body
sometimes these days. I’m not getting any younger
and working in cold winters is a real chore. Hopefully
next year we’ll be in a new centrally heated unit, so
we’ve really only one more winter to endure in the
freezing cold cowsheds! On the whole though, both
myself and Bob live for VWs and repairing them is
second nature.

Penicook). To be honest, I’m not very business-
minded and not at all interested in being any bigger
than we already are. I know Bob can do anything I

What’s been your favourite build?

It’s funny, but the ones that
immediately spring to mind are
not the ones we really made any
money on. For example, there’s
Dave Hall’s RHD Barndoor Deluxe
– which killed us at the time –
and Ian MacDowall’s Deluxe as
well, and obviously my own ’50
10-window. None of these made
us rich – quite the opposite of it in most cases – but
there’s something about being trusted with an epic
build, you know the sort of thing that most people
would say is beyond saving and to finish it and get
it back on the road where it belongs really is just the
best feeling.

Do you do paint as well as metal work?

We do a lot of paint blending after carrying out metal
repair, but we only maybe do a couple of full repaints
each year – it’s not really something that we like to
do, as we prefer doing metal repair and matching
original paint, rather than trying to make everything
look like new.

A recently purchased a cheap diesel heater

that he intends to install in his Bay
Window. Heresy says I. To my mind there
is nothing at all wrong with the factory heating
system and do not get me started on the ethics
of fitting something from China in a machine of
the quality and magnitude of a Volkswagen. Upon
hearing his plans, I took a moment to compose
myself rather than utter anything rash, as words are
like toothpaste and once out there are impossible
to put back in the tube. Steadily I asked: “Have Being unloaded and

cooled era, a VW was undoubtedly
the car to have if you needed to get
anywhere in snowy conditions.

1? It was the name given to a Ruby Red
1963 Beetle that the Australian National
Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) A common and

saying. With no coolant to freeze
and excellent traction surely the
VW would be a safe bet, right?
The car was built at VW’s
Australian Clayton factory and
given to ANARE free of charge as
VW saw the PR opportunity this
venture afforded. Just imagine
being able to crow about the sort
of conditions your product can
cope with. That far out ways the
cost of one humble little Beetle.
A Ruby Red (L456) ’63 was plucked off the
production and the colour was deliberately chosen
to stand out against the snow and ice.
The car itself was ‘winterised’ in a number of
ways Australian cars didn’t ordinarily need to be.
For example, the engine was fitted with European
‘winter-spec’ crankshaft bearings to cope with the
extreme low temperatures found in the Arctic, and
Scandinavian countries where these items were
more common place. To assist with cold starting,
the exhaust manifolds were wrapped in asbestos
insulation (remember these were the days before
asbestos was discovered to be a bad thing) and the
car was equipped with an additional 6-volt battery
(pre-12-volt electrics).
As further precautions, the front wheel bearings
were lubricated with winter-spec lithium grease and
a tow bar and sump guard were bolted on.

Fitted with snow chains and with BP

winter-grade fuel in the tank, Antarctica 1
was delivered in January 1963. Being air-
cooled (and thanks to the already mentioned
further precautions), the engine never froze
(despite temperatures falling to -50°C) and
because of the quality of manufacture and
rubbers used, none of the fine, powdery
snow that crept inside even the smallest of
pin-holes elsewhere on the station was ever
found to have entered the car.
VW of Australia proudly declared it to be ‘The
first production car to reach the Antarctic’. It
was replaced by Antarctica 2, this time painted
International Orange, the following year and you
can enjoy footage of its exploits on something I
believe you call the youtube. And, for a full account

fascinating read.
So what have you and Herr Peene learnt this
month? Hopefully, that a stock as rock VW can cope
with the severest weather the world can throw at
it. In standard form, an air-cooled VW has the build
quality to with-stand even the toughest elements
and the rugged mechanicals make for a car that will
always start and get you to where you want to go.
And without a Chinese heater in sight…
