STUDENT’S BOOK
Unit 7B (page 56)

1 VOCABULARY & GRAMMAR (gerunds)

a) Think about a book, a movie or a song that makes you happy.
b) Read the posts below about Happiness is… and tick the ones you most agree
with. Underline the words you’re not familiar with and look them up on the
dictionary.
c) Look at the first cartoon and answer the question.
d) Go to the Vocabulary Bank on page 158, and complete the second part of the
pagE: 2 VERBS + GERUND (-ING), activities a (complete the gaps) and b (listen
and check).
e) Look at the cartoons again and fill the gaps.
f) Go to the Grammar Bank 7B on page 138. Read the theory and listen to the
audio. Note that there are 3 different cases in which we use the gerund form of
the verb:
1. When the verb has the function of a noun, like an object or a subject.
(Cuando el verbo cumple la function de sustantivo, como puede ser un
objeto o un sujeto)
2. After the “like / dislike” verbs: like, dislike, hate, love, enjoy, etc.
3. After prepositions.
Put that theory into practice with activities a and b on the next page, 139.
Go back to page 56.
g) Write your own continuation for Happiness is… If you want, you can send it to
me on an e-mail (this is optional). I would love to know what makes you happy!
Here you have mine: To me, happiness is eating a chocolate ice cream after
swimming in the sea.
(Note that “eating” is the object of the verb, and “swimming” goes after a
preposition).
