pull-off the exercise given to all of you. Can
anybody tell me what he/she notices with the "I think I noticed that we are asked about fire,
following sentences?” ice and the end of the world sir"
Very good!

I have here a poem entitled Fire and Ice by

Robert Frost. Please read in chorus. (the students read chorally)
“Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire

Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
4. Discussion Is also great
Have you noticed the rising and falling
in the poem? “Yes sir”
Who is the poet of the poem?
“Robert Frost sir”
Robert Frost, in full Robert Lee Frost, (born
March 26, 1874, San Francisco, California, U.S.
He died January 29, 1963, Boston,
Massachusetts), American poet who was much
admired for his depictions of the rural life
of New England, his command of
American colloquial speech, and his realistic
verse portraying ordinary people in everyday
situations.

What is the message that the poem is

trying to convey?
“I think the poem is trying to convey is that
these 2 elements in the title could possibly
cause of the end of the world and fire is the

differing apocalyptic scenarios represented by
the elements of the poem's title. The speaker
believes fire to be the more likely world-ender
of the two, and links it directly with what he or
she has "tasted" of "desire." In an ironically
conversational tone, the speaker adds that ice—
which represents hate and indifference—would
"also" be "great" as a way of bringing about the
end of the world

Where the poem do you think is

inspired of?
“I think the poem was inspired by another

and Ice" was inspired by a passage in Canto 32
of Dante's Inferno, in which the worst offenders
of hell (the traitors) are submerged up to their
necks in ice while in a fiery hell: "a lake so
bound with ice, / It did not look like water, but
like a glass right clear / I saw, where sinners are
preserved in ice.

5. Grammar Integration
Intonation-means the rising or falling of a
speaking voice.

INTONATION PATTERNS:

Falling intonation- a pattern in which our voice

falls to a low pitch by the end of a thought
group or statement. We use the falling
intonation in the following cases:
1. Short, complete sentences It's so near./It's
very far.
2. In seeking information with question words
such as what, when, which, who, how, etc.

Ex. How much is this mug?/What's your name?

3. In tag questions when the speaker is sure

that what he says is right
Ex. It's a tough day, isn't it?/ It's a wonderful
weather, isn't it?
4. For commands and exclamations

Ex.Leave me alone./Give me my keys.

Rising intonation- a pattern in which our voice

rises to a high pitch by the end of a thought
group or statement.
We use the rising intonation in the following
situations:

1. Statements intended to encourage

Ex.That's a remarkable thought./You're doing a
great job!

2. Questions answerable by 'Yes' and 'No'

Ex.Do you want to leave?/ Did you see the
giraffe?
3. Questions beginning with question words
when the speaker wishes to show special
interest
Ex.Where do you live?
/ What do you do for a living?

4. Tag questions when the speaker is not sure

that what he says is correct
Ex. You're sure, aren't you?/ You've checked it,
haven't you?

5. Sentences ending with 'please'; for

'goodbye'; for 'thank you' when used to show
gratitude for a simple matter
Ex. (passing the dish, etc.)A cup of tea, please?/
Would you pass me that pen, please?

“So class, what are the two patterns in

Intonation?" "Rising and Falling Intonation, Sir!"
