Our Favorite Foods!

What is the cultural background of your favorite food?

Welcome Class! Today we
will be evaluating two
models to represent cultural
diversity and learning about
the cultural history of our
classmates favorite foods.
Let’s Begin!

Warm-Up
⬩ To begin, take the sticky note that I have placed on your desk, it will be green or
pink. Write your favorite food on the sticky note and then fold it in half. Think
of a food that has a rich cultural history (avoid foods such as french fries,
chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese etc.)

⬩ Next, place the note in the large bowl at the front of the class. Take a sticky
note of the opposite color from the bowl, no peeking! If you had green choose
pink and vise-versa. Then, return to your seat.

Food and Cultural Identity
⬩ Food is an important contributing factor in one's cultural identity. It serves as a
means of connection between people.

⬩ During today's lesson we will be learning more about the food that contributes
to our fellow classmates cultural identity. In doing so, we will build
relationships among ourselves and develop an interest/appreciation in our
differences.

⬩ Are there any questions before we begin?

Lesson Objectives

⬩ Subject Observable Objective: Students will be able to summarize in one


paragraph how a specific food contributes to one’s cultural identity. (Evaluation)

⬩ Multicultural Objective: Build social relationships to promote interest in


differences and include others in school and social activities.

Salad Bowl Model
⬩ A model used to represent cultural diversity where “...learners from
all cultures could retain their cultural values and traditions and in
which the school could address the needs of all learners” (Manning,
Baruth, and Lee, 2017, p.22).

⬩ Think of a cookbook where each recipe is individual, unique, and


valued for how it contributes to the cookbook.

Melting Pot Model
⬩ A model used to represent cultural diversity which was “...thought
to be a model of the assimilation of immigrants into the United
States...” (Manning, Baruth, and Lee, 2017, p.22).

⬩ Think of combining every recipe in the cookbook together to make


one big recipe. Each recipe is no longer able to show how is is
unique and important, it is one big mess.

What You Will Complete Today

⬩ Today’s Lesson will consist of 3 written assignments; A Guided


Practice WS, and Independent Practice, and an Exit Slip.

⬩ These worksheets will be due by the end of class. The following


slides will explain and example each component in further detail.

⬩ You may now open your sticky note and see which food you have.

⬩ For the next 10 minutes you will
research the food that you have chosen
and answer the 5 questions on the
guided practice sheet.

⬩ As an example, I chose to research


Dolams, a traditional Turkish dish.

⬩ If you have questions, make sure to


ask. I am here to help!

Independent Practice
⬩ Now that you have conducted
research on your food, you will
now write one paragraph (7
sentences) explaining your food
and how it contributes to cultural
identity.
