5. Check whether the following arguments are valid. Marks: 15 + 15
For each argument, identify the premises and the conclusion (5 marks), re-write these in
symbolic form (5 marks) and use the truth table method to check whether they are valid or
invalid (5 marks)
a. If Kashif plays in the match, Fareed will be left out of the team. If Fareed does not
play in the match, his father will not be able to see him play. Fareed’s father was so
happy and proud to be in the stadium as his son made an unbeaten half-century.
Therefore, Kashif did not play in the match.
b. Either Fareeda will lend Mohsin her car or Baji Shamim will cancel Mohsin's contract.
Baji Shamim cancelled Mohsin’s contract. So we know that Fareeda did not lend
Mohsin her car.
6. Translate each of the following arguments to symbolic form

a. If one gets married before one turns 25 and has at least three children, one will have
a happy life. I am 26 and single. Therefore, I must be unhappy.
b. If you want to be considered a successful person, one must own at least own two
houses. Either a successful person does not own two houses or she has 7 crore
rupees. Therefore, if I am a successful person, I have 7 crore rupees.
7. Prove whether the following statements are equivalent. Marks: 10
You may use any method to prove or disprove the equivalence, as long as it is logical and
complete.
a. I wear a hat if and only if it is sunny.
If and only if I wear a hat is it sunny.
b. If Pakistan will recognize Israel, Pakistan can get from better trading terms with the
US, EU and Canada.
If Pakistan can get from better trading terms with the US, EU and Canada, Pakistan
will recognize Israel.
