Why I love playing “ultimate”

by Maria Alberto
I played ultimate, originally known as “ultimate frisbee,” for the first time when I was in school. I had always
been very active since I was a kid and I felt like trying something new because I was bored of basketball and
soccer. I fell in love with the sport right away!
Ultimate is an exciting sport which is played in an area about the same length as a soccer field. There are two
teams of seven and players throw a flat disc, or Frisbee, to their teammates. Points are scored when a player
catches the disc in the other team’s area of the field. You can catch the disc with one or both hands. While
you are holding the disc, you have to keep one foot on the ground and, without moving, you have to pass the
disc to another player within ten seconds.
Ultimate was invented in the 1960s in the United States. The rules were written by a group of students from
Columbia High School in New Jersey. The first college ultimate game was played in 1972 between teams
from Rutgers and Princeton universities. The game took place in the location where the first college football
game had been played 103 years earlier. Rutgers beat Princeton in both sports!
There are no referees in ultimate. Instead, the players decide when a point has been scored, which means
everyone has to follow the rules. The sport even has a rule called Spirit of the Game (or SOTG), which
explains this idea. This is different from any other game I have played and some people say it makes players
have a lot of respect for each other. However, some ultimate games have special spectators called
“observers” who watch the game – if any of the players disagree about a point that’s been scored, the
observers decide what happened.
Playing ultimate is a great way to stay in shape, but it also exercises your brain. For example, you have to
think about what the other team is doing, as well as how strong the wind is. I’ve spent a lot of time playing this
sport and I still play several times a week. Trying it out at school was one of the best decisions I ever made!
