BINUS 5th Anniversary 2021

Theme/Highlights/Script Data Collection / Remarks

Year 1: A humble beginning
Highlights:
• Started out in a small ruko in Kemang Pratama with big dreams of
helping people become more innovative, build character, and have
leadership skills.
• Have 2 elder sisters, both well-known for being very successful.
• Despite the modest start, many people were curious about me (mostly
due to the renown of my siblings).
• Used this opportunity to show people that I am my own person and I
am ready to serve.

In the quaint neighborhood of Kemang Pratama sits a small ruko. Its plain - Photos of Kemang Pratama
walls and simple interior serve as an unassuming facade. Little did (outside and inside)
people know, it was a starting point for one of the now best schools in
Indonesia, BINUS School Bekasi.

Our home for learning began as a small institution with big dreams of - Photos of construction of

BINUS Bekasi was resolute in its mission.

Balancing the expectations of its community and its limited capabilities - Photos collection of all school
during its first year was a gargantuan task. Though, BINUS Bekasi activities in the first year
realized early on that trying to match up to its sister schools was futile.
Our proud institution was indisputably unique and distinct, with its own
personality and identity that couldn’t be found anywhere else. As the year
went by, BINUS School Bekasi continued to let its character shine
through developing its students. A steadfast voice echoed in our home
for learning’s hallways, “this is me.”

Year 2: SC, APYLC, BYLS (Teamwork)

Highlights:
• Despite having a good number of people under my wing, I felt a bit
lonely and life was starting to get monotonous.
• Saw examples from other schools, including my sisters.
• Decided to start Student Council and reached out to other groups in an
attempt to make connections.
• Was invited to BYLS and APYLC.
• Had fun, honed soft skills, made new friends, looking forward to doing
more
Script:
Looking around, it was evident that BINUS Bekasi finally stood as a
family. The growing crowd of Binusians fully believed in its potential and
was looking forward to its next step. However, it wasn’t difficult to see

that things were getting a bit boring. Every day, its members would meet
the same few people and repeat the same routine. The school did
manage to form the student council; though, at that point, they were still - Photo of 1st student
organizing themselves. The need for activities to boost their leadership council/debate for president
skills and get them networking was clear as day. So, BINUS Bekasi election
looked to Simprug and Serpong for an answer.

With that, our sister schools provided us with two opportunities: BINUS - Photos of BYLS
Youth Leaders’ Summit (BYLS) and the Asia-Pacific Young Leaders - Photos of APYLC
Convention (APYLC). The former provided a space for young leaders
from all different schools to discuss local and global issues. While the
latter tasked delegates from the Asia Pacific region to solve global issues
through research, presentation, and intercultural collaboration.

A selection process was held in order to select the appropriate

candidates for the two. In the end; a handful of members from the student
council were chosen to attend BYLS, while a couple of 11th graders were
selected to partake in APYLC.

(Interviews about experience in APYLC and BYLS 2017)

Coming home and getting back into their regular schedule, the students
felt a bit disappointed at how brief the excursions were. However, the
new knowledge they gained and people they met had them more
motivated than ever to improve themselves. It’s funny to think back on
how they left BINUS Bekasi with insecurity and uncertainty, but returned
not long after with so much more confidence. Not only that, the lasting
impression our school made on other participants made us realize just
how much we were capable of. Suddenly, it’s almost as if we could light
the world up like dynamite.

Year 3: Competitions, Recognition, Ted Talk (Striving for excellence, Perseverance, Integrity,
Teamwork)
Highlights:
• Felt ready to continue going out of my comfort zone.
• Joined several local and international competitions (futsal, basketball,
debate, WSC, olympiads, etc)
• I perceived many competitors to be cautious and a bit hostile, probably
because I was a newcomer.
• Many people mistook me for my sisters (“Binus? Which one, Serpong
or Simprug?”).
• Decided to keep my head high and stay focused. Even though people
looked down on me, I was always courteous and respectful.
• Result: some losses, many wins. Best of all, made many more new
connections.
• Even helped my sisters organize TED Talk.
• I felt excited for the future.

As BINUS School Bekasi’s 3rd year commenced, the school felt ready to
continue venturing outside its comfort zone. As a result, countless
students were participating in both local and international competitions.
Theme/Highlights/Script Data Collection / Remarks
During initial attempts, BINUS Bekasi was conspicuously labeled as a
newcomer. Students and teachers from other schools were perceived to
be quite cautious and perhaps a bit avoidant towards our students due to
this. Others mistook our students to have hailed from our sister schools,
BINUS Serpong and Simprug, as our name had yet to be known. Despite
being the underdog, our students remained courteous at all times and
kept their head in the game. Choosing to focus on the competition
instead of getting distracted definitely proved our school well in the end.

Students from BINUS School Bekasi returned with trophies and medals - Photos of competitions, i.e.
from competitions in futsal, basketball, debate, science and maths futsal, basketball, debate,
olympiads, as well as the World Scholar’s Cup. Their outstanding science and math Olympiads,
performances cemented our home for learning’s name as a force to be WSC
reckoned with. Our students’ commendable effort at the 2018 London - Photos of LIYSF
International Youth Science Forum shouldn’t be underestimated either.
They presented their research which focused on improving the conditions
of our surrounding areas in a simple and cost-effective way allowed them
to become one of the best speakers of the event. Aside from that, our
students’ well-mannered and friendly demeanor allowed them to make
connections with many new people; laying the foundation for inter-school
collaborations to come.

One of our first cooperative efforts with other schools was during - Photos of TEDxBinusSchool
TEDxBinusSchool that very same year. All three BINUS Schools came
together to organize a TEDx event in BINUS School Simprug, where
talented speakers and performers give their all to convey an important
message to the community. Our student volunteers worked hard to make
the event a success. With 13 speakers and over a hundred audience
members from many different schools, they achieved just that.

(Interviews about TEDxBinusSchool)

The end of 2018 made it clear that this was only the beginning for BINUS
School Bekasi. Achieving so much in so little time meant that the only
way we could go was up. Excited as ever for the years to come, it was as
if our school was looking the world straight in the eye and exclaiming,
“don’t stop me now!”
Year 4: Family Sports Day, Charity, Graduation, Top Achiever in Geography (Innovation)
Highlights:
• Noticed that, while I started getting recognition from the outside, I still
lacked a lot of contributions to my surrounding area.
• Decided to plan Family Sports Day
• On the day of the event, I was unhappy that not many people came at
first. Though, I decided to ask my friends for help promoting the event
on social media. At the end of the day, we had a big turn out. Many
people gave me positive feedback.
• I decided to use the money I made during the event to support the kids
in Bantar Gebang.
• At the end of the year, I said goodbye to the Class of 2019- one of
which even managed to score highest in Geography in the area.
• The future seems bright.
Script:
BINUS School Bekasi has undoubtedly shown incredible growth these
past few years, from improvements to its own facilities to recognition both

locally and internationally. However, it knew that learning is a lifelong
process and there was still much to do. Hence, the school decided to
start working on its next event, BINUS Bekasi’s first ever Family Sports - Photos of family sport day
and Games Day.

The event’s conception was based upon the idea that all members of the
school; be it staff, students, or parents; would greatly benefit from a
chance to work and play together. So, they’d be split into teams and
compete against each other to win a trophy. During the following weeks,
students were busy prepping their teams while parents and teachers
were setting up the venue. Soon enough, our previously unadorned white
walls were filled with posters, stickers, and banners featuring the colors
and mascots of all four houses.

(Interviews about Family Sport Day)

Family Sports and Games Day acquired tremendous success in its initial - Photos of charity/donation to
year. The Parents Support Group, who spearheaded the event, decided Bantar Gebang
to use its earnings for a good cause. As a result, they partnered with the
Student Council to teach and provide goodies for children living in Bantar
Gebang.

student in particular even managed to score highest in A Level

home for learning looks forward to the bright future ahead. With each
coming and passing student, a million dreams turn into reality.
Year 5: COVID (Perseverance)
Highlights:
• At first, life seemed steady. Things were going along as planned.
• I heard whispers of impending doom, but I chose to keep it in the back
of my head and focused on the present.
• Suddenly, I got news of the pandemic. I felt sad to part from my friends
and quarantine myself. But, as a rational person, I know it was for the
best.
• Even though things were rough for everyone, I kept a positive attitude.
I constantly checked-in with my friends and found ways to keep my
home for learning alive with technology.
• Things are shaky, but we can get through it if we work together.
• I look forward to continuing to better myself in the years to come and
believe I can overcome any obstacle.
