When a continental plate and an oceanic plate move toward each other,
the oceanic plate will subduct (go under) the continental plate because
the oceanic plate is more dense than the continental plate.
a volcanic arc is a chain of volcanoes
that develop parallel to a trench.
• There are no trench, no volcano and no island arc created during this
process. Instead what is created is a large group of tall mountains called
mountain range. (ex: Himalayan mountain range)
• As the plates separate, new materials from the mantle ooze up to fill the
gap. These materials will slowly cool to produce new ocean floor.
• The spreading rate at these ridges may vary from 2 to 20 cm per year.
