Thermometer Calibration
A new calibration service by the Instrument Calibration Centre
The Instrument Calibration Centre (ICC) of
Singapore Technologies Electronics
(ST Elect) is one of the leading laboratories
in Singapore that provides a wide scope
of temperature calibrations over the range
of -40ºC to 300ºC. Among the different
kinds of industrial thermometers that ICC
calibrates, the calibration of the liquid-in-
glass (LIG) thermometer is ICC’s latest
capability. The new service is able to
provide a calibration of LIG thermometers
with an accuracy as good as 0.1ºC.
LIQUID-IN-GLASS THERMOMETER
LIG ther mometers make use of the
expansion of a liquid (usually mercury or a
suitable spirit) to indicate the temperature
of the thermometer “bulb” by reading the
position of the meniscus of the liquid
column from a scale engraved on the
capillary stem.
Typically, LIG thermometers are used either
immersed totally or partially. The same LIG
thermometer cannot be used for both total
immersion and partial immersion. A total
immersion LIG thermometer is used with
its entire liquid column, including the bulb,
fully immersed in the temperature medium.
A partial immersion LIG thermometer, on
the other hand, is only immersed to a
prescribed depth.
FLEXIBILITY TO CUSTOMERS
ICC is able to carry out LIG thermometer
calibrations at total or partial immersion by
comparison with the standard platinum
resistance thermometer (SPRT), and in
accordance to the International
Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). To
provide maximum flexibility to the
customer, the calibration temperatures and
type of calibration report are chosen
according to the intended use of the LIG
ther mometer and the needs of the
customer. Suggested calibration
temperatures and types of calibration
reports are given to customers on request.
CALIBRATION SYSTEM
The new LIG thermometer calibration
system uses a high quality camera system
to capture a sharp and enlarged image of
the LIG thermometer’s liquid column
meniscus. The camera system consists of
a camera body with an ultra-zoom lens
mounted on a tripod and an image capture
board to interface the computer and the
camera. During calibration, the image is
displayed on a high-resolution monitor and
the calibration software determines the
measured temperature readings from the
image. The camera system is able to
achieve a resolution of better than 1/25 of
the scale division of the LIG thermometer.

As an established service centre, ICC
provides calibration and repair needs for a
wide range of test equipment. In the field
of temperature calibration, ICC is able to
provide high quality, timely and reliable
calibration for the following equipment:
* Clinical thermometers
* Thermocouples
* Resistance thermometers (including
SPRT)
* Temperature indicators with and
without sensors
* Room temperature sensors
ICC also provides the following as part of
the calibration:
* Calibration/SINGLAS certificate
* Test results including measurement
uncertainty
* Before and after adjustment
calibration data, if applicable
* Delivery services to and from
customers’ premise
