Computer Systems Servicing NC II - Grade 11
Quarter 1- Module 6: Installers Preparation and OS Installation Procedures

I. Introduction
Every Computer requires an Installation (or setup) of a computer program (including device
drivers and plugins) for making its programs ready for execution. Installation is the particular
configuration of a software or hardware with a view to making it usable with the computer. A soft
or digital copy of the piece of software (program) is needed to install in a specific Operating System.

This module will give you an in-depth explanation of Installers Preparation and OS
Installation Procedures.

|Installers Preparation|

 What is an Installer? 

An installer is a piece of software that is used to install software programs on a system. Installers
simplify the process of installing software by providing the user a step-by-step process with the
ability to select the desired options (Computer Hope, 2017).

 Types of Software Installation 

According to ServerWatch Staff, in their originally published online article in their

website ServerWatch Tutorials, the following are the Different Types of Software Installation.
Media - based software installation - This is the most common type of installation. It will
take all of the files that make up your software and place them onto a span of disks. It will
contain some form of an executable to call the process as well.
Web - based software installation - This is a pretty cool way to deploy software that has been
picking up popularity in the web. In a web-based, it will do an integrity check and only
download the files that your system needs. This saves you time in downloading. The problems
with this type of installation come up when you introduce firewalls and strict security.
Single exe installation - This is one that most of us are familiar with, the install is a self-
compressed executable file that you run which will extract itself and contains all of the files
needed to run your installation as well as the explanation file which tells the software where to
load and what changes to make. .
Windows Installer installation - With the introduction of Windows 2000 into our lives came
the introduction of the Windows Installer service, which resides on a client machine and runs
your installations for you given that you provide the correct information

 Portable Installer Software 

A program that doesn't have any configuration

options is also a portable application .A portable application (portable app), sometimes also
called standalone, is a program designed to read and write its configuration settings into an
accessible folder in the computer, usually the folder where the portable application can be found. This
makes it easier to transfer the program with the user's preferences and data between different
computers (Wikipedia contributors, 2020)
Like any application, portable applications must be compatible with the computer system
hardware and operating system. If we are trying to install Windows Operating System on a laptop that
does not have a DVD drive, or we want a portable installation tool that we can use on a lot of
computers, creating a bootable USB Windows installation drive may be the answer we are looking
for (Wikipedia contributors, 2020) .

6
 Portable Bootable Device 

A boot device is any piece of hardware that can read or contains the files required for a
computer to start. For example, a hard drive, floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, DVD drive,
and USB jump drive are all considered bootable devices. However, unless the necessary boot
files are stored on the drive, diskette, or disc, the computer cannot boot from that device
(Computer Hope, 2020).

The RUFUS Application

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB
keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Rufus is a free utility created by Pete Batard for Microsoft
Windows that creates bootable USB flash drives from ISO image files. Rufus supports Windows
versions 7 and later. Source: https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/b/bootdevi.htm

 Creating Bootable Device Using Rufus 

Requirements
 Rufus Application
 Laptop or Desktop Computer
 Windows 7 OS / Windows Server 2008 r2 disk images ISO files
 8 GB USB flash drive (minimum recommended)

An ISO  file, often called an ISO image, is a single file that's a perfect representation of an
entire CD, DVD, or BD. The entire contents of a disc can be precisely duplicated in a single ISO
file. An ISO file works in much the same way. The file itself is no good unless it can be opened,
assembled, and used (Fisher, 2020).

In the next modules, you will be
taught on how to Install the Windows Operating System. For now. Let us have first an overview of
OS Installation.
Installing Windows usually sound frightening task for beginners. That’s fine. Nothing to
worry about because everything will be made easy for you. If you are planning to install Windows
Operating Systems, no need for you to run to other experts or computer technicians because I am
telling you now that you can do this task all by yourself!

1. Based on what was stated in the scenario, I can conclude the following:
 The USB flash drive does not meet the minimum requirement for the storage capacity
 The ISO files are corrupted before the execution of the process
 Either the USB flash drive or the computer is infected with virus
2. To resolve the issue, I can troubleshoot these by means of the following:
 I can replace my USB device and try a new one.
 I will recopy and transfer my ISO file once again.
 I can try using a different computer for me to check if the computer is infected with virus.

3. As a CSS student, these concepts have huge impact to me because these would all contribute to the
skills that I will acquire in the future.

B.
1. A device driver is a computer program that operates or controls a particular type of device that is
attached to a computer.
2. The main purpose of device drivers is to provide abstraction by acting as a translator between
a hardware device and the applications or operating systems that use it. Programmers can write
higher-level application code independently of whatever specific hardware the end-user is using.
