3) CHEST FREEZER

Chest freezer is one of the common

appliance that are design to deal with the
problem of long-term storage of frozen foods.
This means, chest freezer is very s uitable for
storage of food. With a big space in the
freezer, bulkier food items can be stored in it.
chest freezer models usually contains storage
racks of varying sizes so that we can keep
different types of frozen foods separately.
Normally, items stored in chest freezer are stacked upward. So, to reach items on
the bottom, we need to move out several packages so that we can reach the items
needed. Chest freezer usually have a top opening due to the fact that cold air is
heavier than warm air, and it does not escape as easily from chest freezers that
open from the top. This will increase the efficiency of the freezer. It also have a
better thermal insulation and larger evaporators than normal fridges.

The temperature of the chest freezer in the laboratory can be can controlled to
a minimum temperature of -35 oC. At this temperature, the activities of bacteria will be
slowed down and thus, the food can be stored at a longer time than usual. The chest
freezer used refrigerant R509 as its substance to provide cooling and is also
environmental friendly since it is chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) free.

Not all foods are suitable to be stored at a very low temperature. This is
because some food will be destroyed when put in this temperature level. Bulkier
items such as whole meat slabs or turkeys are often stored in the main chamber of a
chest freezer, while items such as bagged ice or frozen dinners are stored in baskets
for easier access. Since cold air tends to sink, items placed in the lowest section of a
chest freezer tend to become frozen solid and remain that way for months.

To make sure the efficiency of chest freezer is maintained so that we can

store foods for a longer time, we need to use a chest freezer at certain ways. First,
we need to keep the freezer full since it is hard to keep the temperatures inside low if
the freezer is empty secondly, we must rotate the foods. In other words, used the
older foods first since all foods will drop their quality when they stay. Next, use the
right storage materials. This is because packaging materials will helps to prevent
frost from damaging the surface of your foods. Thick plastic bags, tempered glass
containers and moisture-resistant papers and foils are the examples of a suitable
storage materials that can be used in a chest freezer. Lastly, we must ensured that
the freezer is kept closed as much as possible. This can prevents warming that
raises your energy bills and could spoil preserved foods.

The way that chest freezer functioning is almost the same with some other
types of freezer. It removed the heat from the items that we want to store and thus
caused the items to be cooled down and then freezed.
