This season brings a celebration of retro. For the daring, hot pants are
back along with street-style bra tops, while Bermuda shorts and balloon-
sleeve blouses are the chic alternative. Midi dresses are having a moment,
while crochet, earth-toned prints and floppy hats add a boho vibe.

If wearing fluorescent socks in the 80s is something of a bad fashion memory for you, then you
may wish to avoid this season’s big impact highlighter hues. But opting for one neon bright
accessory is a more wearable nod to the trend, or opt for some of this summer’s citrus shades.

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY
Joanne has been writing crochet
patterns for more than eight
years and is the lead designer
for The Crochet Project. She
specialises in wearable crochet,
combining a knowledge of
seamstress pattern drafting and
the material science of crochet
to make pieces that fit and drape
beautifully with patterns that are
well written and clear.

PATTERN NOTES
Worked flat in pieces, the back is
worked from hem to underarm
with part of the dolman-style
sleeve. The front is worked as
the back with the lace yoke and
sleeves worked as part of it. The
sections are then joined along
the back yoke and sleeve seam
and down sleeve and side seams
using slip stitch crochet seams.

knot tied on backside of flower.
Use a darning needle to bring ends
back down inside bead, into tassel
head and out in tassel body.
Step 6: Trim and give a
finishing brush.

FINISHING

Crochet
The gorgeous, fluffy
Esme Cardigan
by Annelies Baes
(issue 62) is worked
I have always believed
that anyone can learn to
crochet, so long as you
in one piece, which follow one simple rule:
means minimal
finishing! don’t try to run before you
can chain! The chain is the
most simple of stitches
and therefore ideal for
practising the all-important hold, which helps create
the perfect tension for forming all the following
stitches. When my mother taught me to crochet,
she followed her grandmother’s lead and helped
me to hook metre upon metre of chain before I
was shown any further stitches. It was a fantastic
foundation for learning the more difficult
techniques. Once your chains are looking even
and feel comfortable to create, then progressing
on to the stitches becomes much easier.
If at any point you feel as if you have lost your
hold, simply go back to those comforting lengths
of chain until your confidence returns. My biggest
tip is to remember that this wonderful craft is well
known for being relaxing and fun, so find a comfy
chair, some free time and just enjoy it!
Happy crocheting…
